From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-This clearly written, attractive combination of topical features and species profiles provides an excellent overview of dinosaurs for elementary school students. The book introduces different aspects of prehistoric life, introducing geologic eras, dinosaur types and behaviors, and other animals of the Mesozoic. Colorful spreads feature varied layouts with drawings, photos, word balloons with extra facts, and simple cartoons. Labeled spot images of dinosaurs provide useful examples: Compsognathus, for example, is used to represent the Jurassic period, the variety of dinosaur sizes, and carnivores. About half of the book is devoted to more than 50 two-page species profiles, variously grouped by environment, behaviors, and physical features. Each spread covers the basics, including size, habitat, era, and key characteristics. Words and layouts vary neatly in order to highlight particular features. Comparisons with other dinosaurs and modern animals help make the information accessible. The material is up-to-date: many illustrations include feathers, and a feature about new discoveries is current through early 2018. Closing pages look at how scientists find out about prehistoric life, followed by a handy "dino file" with spot images and pronunciations of about 130 species. VERDICT A superb choice to fill the gap between simpler dinosaur introductions, such as My Little Book of Dinosaurs, and more detailed encyclopedias including Dinosaurs: A Visual Encylopedia.-Steven Engelfried, Wilsonville Public Library, ORα(c) Copyright 2011. I love this book. It is perfect for an extremely inquisitive five year old who is currently obsessed with all things dinosaur. It gives enough information to keep him interested as he gets a little older. Many dinosaurs (thankfully with phoenetic pronunciations included), information about the Mesozoic Era, information on how fossils form and how/why scientists draw certain conclusions about dinosaurs- all in all a great book especially as the next step past "entry level" type kids dinosaur books. Think of it as "advanced beginner."

Fun for both girls and boys who just have a love of Dinosaurs. Nice hardcover design. Sturdy. Easy to read.

Bought for a gift. Big colorful pages. Very nice quality.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of this book. The brightly illustrated cover is padded with raised elements to improve the tactile experience. The opening page (see photo) provides a nice bookplate to inscribe your child’s name. The Rable of Contents encompasses four pages: it is easy to find an overview topic, as well as a particular type or individual dinosaur. The illustrations are bright and eye catching, and the pages are smooth and easy to turn. Your visual tactile learners will be very pleased. The publisher has used varying font size and boldness to draw the eyes around the pages. The information provided is in small, easy to read and digest bits. The dinosaur names are bolted, as well as broken down into easy to sound out segments. There is even a ribbon bookmark attached. This is an informative, visually appealing book that would appeal to a broad range of dinosaur lovers and I can see it being used in my home with my grandchildren for a long time. This book can be read with an adult or in many cases, on their own by an intermediate reader. It is a really well done reference designed to appeal to a broad age group. I highly recommend this book.

My 4-year-old son is obsessed with dinosaurs, and he loves books like this. I have learned I can count on DK as a publisher to produce high-quality non-fiction books for kids with colorful graphics and pictures. We love all the DK books we have (and we have a lot of them). This one is my son’s favorite. There are pages in the front of the book that describe the history of the different periods as well as dinosaurs in general. Then, there are 2-page spreads for all of the most “popular” dinosaurs as well as many you probably haven’t heard of before. Everything is illustrated in full color with realistic photographs of the dinosaurs (not real photographs obviously, but they look real). One particularly thoughtful design detail of this book is the padded cover. The book is very heavy and easy to draw up on tiny feet when held by tiny hands. The rounded corners and padded covers are sure to minimize damge.

What an excellent book for young kids interested in learning about dinosaurs! The binding is good, the covers and spine are thick and sturdy, pages are suitably thick, and it even sports a bound-in ribbon book mark. You get the history of dinosaurs, how they lived, what they ate, and the period in which they lived. They are grouped with information about each different type of dinosaur. Then the best part. A 2 page informational spread for 80 different dinosaurs. In addition to fun facts on the dinosaur featured, and a pronunciation guide, there are pictures of how scientists think it looked along with pictures of fossils for some of the creatures. Each has a small bar at the bottom of the page showing the period in which it lived, its relative size to an average grown human, its size in feet and meters, where it lived, and what it ate.The back of the book has information on who discovered dinosaurs, fossils, and 4 pages of mini photos of the dinosaurs in the book along with how to pronounce their name, plus a list of dinosaur words and a comprehensive index. The 4 year old dino lover who will be getting this book will be thrilled!

All three of my grandkids (3, 5, and 7) love this book about dinosaurs. They all love dinosaurs, particularly the eldest, and despite the fact he's a precocious reader - about sixth-grade level - he ate this book up and is using it as a reference because he likes to draw dinosaurs. The book gives background on dinosaurs - where they lived, when, their food, their habits. They're grouped by type and there's specialized information on each kind. In addition to this general info, there are two-page spreads on eighty kinds of dinosaurs with lots of pictures of what they looked like as well as images of fossils. There's a pronunciation guide, too, and a comparison chart for each to show you how big each creature was in comparison to a human. There's also some information on prominent paleontologists. This colorful and informative book is just the thing for young dinosaur fans and like all DK books, it's well made with good covers and thick pages. It also has a ribbon bookmark. Recommended.

This book is very educational. It is great for kids who want to learn about dinosaurs. Many kids are fascinated by dinosaurs. There are many pictures and facts in this book. It is very vibrant and interesting. It held my child's attention very nicely. It is a high quality book. It would make a nice gift as well.It is nice to interest children in science and dinosaurs. It is also a good way to interest kids who may be reluctant to read. The writing was well done. It was age appropriate. This will fascinate kids of different ages. I would recommend it.
