Review

“This book is a stunner. Devastating, demanding and deeply moving, Bridge of Clay unspools like a kind of magic act in reverse, with feats of narrative legerdemain concealed by misdirection that all make sense only when the elements of the trick are finally laid out.” —Wall Street Journal"Markus Zusak crafts an unforgettable saga." —US Weekly"In a complex narrative that leaps through time and place and across oceans, Zusak paints a vivid portrait of the brothers trying to regain their balance by keeping their family’s story alive." —Time“It blew me away.” —Jodi Picoult, bestselling author of A Spark of Light and Small Great Things “A captivating book with a mighty, fearless heart, BRIDGE OF CLAY is filled with characters to believe in and care about ... achingly moving, delightfully funny, and thoroughly uplifting.” —M. Maybe I'm not in the right stage of my life to read a book like this, maybe I'm not at the right age, maybe I just won't ever like it. But I'm not going to lie I'm pretty devastated that I didn't like this book. Markus Zusak is my favorite author, the book theif was my favorite book and maybe I had my hopes set way way too high when I started this book. From the second I started it I knew I wasn't going to love it, I just couldn't get into the story. I didn't have any relationship with the characters which is not like me. I didn't like the writing style which really surprised me. I don't know what happened but I just didn't like it. I don't regret buying it though, it's just part of my journey as a reader. I hope the rest of you love this book. I really do. Maybe I'll try again one day when I'm in a different place in my life.

I couldn't wait to read Bridge of Clay after reading The Book Thief. As I turned the page in Bridge of Clay I thought hummm I must have missed something. The storytellers random thoughts or just added phrases or words seemed misplaced but I kept on reading. The book demands attention! It's a family saga full of love, anger, heartbreak, failure and accomplishment. Clay is the bridge. I loved it and finished with tears in my eyes.

I absolutely loved Zusak’s previous books I am the Messenger and The Book Thief and couldn’t wait to read this one. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in Bridge of Clay. Though there were several very powerful scenes in the book, the writing style often made it difficult for me to follow the story and it never really flowed comfortably for me. Perhaps it’s just my limited intellect but when I turned the last page I felt like I had probably missed some critical plot elements in the book.

The Book Thief is in my top 5 favorite books of all time. Markus Zusak has an amazing way of bringing his characters to life in such a way that they stay with me, long after the book is over. Bridge of Clay took years and years for Markus to write, which is quite an inspirational story in and of itself. While reading Bridge, I appreciated each detail of his writing because I knew how intentional it was for him. These five Dunbar brothers and their story is one that will stay with me. The writing of their tale is woven together so masterfully, poetically, gingerly. The story does not begin at the beginning--it begins in the present, which is the end; and then it goes back in time to the beginning. It's difficult to figure the timing out at first, but keep reading. The words drew me in and once I was in, I didn't want the story to end. I also tried to predict how Markus would tie all the pieces together at the end, as he did so masterfully in Book Thief. Bridge of Clay did not disappoint. The book ends back at the beginning. The circular way of writing adds layer upon layer to the characters and their dynamic relationship. The writing shows the complexity of these five Dunbar boys, but you will love them! I already want to read it again.

I bought this book because of rave reviews and because "The Book Thief" was absolutely great. But after 70 pages when I couldn't figure out what the story line was about, I quit. It is one of the most confusing novels I have ever attempted to read.

Five Dunbar boys, the eldest was Matthew (who narrated the story), the fourth was Clay, who seemed to be the most sensitive and socially aware. The youngest was Tommy with Henry and Rory somewhere in between. They lived at 18 Archer Street in the suburbs of Sydney, where Matthew took over the job of caring for his brothers after their mother died and six months later their father left without a word. Their struggles were many, their ways of grieving all different.Bridge of Clay tells of tragedy and loss; of heartache and hope; and insecurities, not just in the five boys but in their father as well. Clay would be the one to build a bridge – but was it a bricks and mortar bridge, or a metaphorical bridge? As we learn of life before the five Dunbar boys were born; of Michael’s early life, and Penny’s as well, we get to know their individual likes and dislikes; their hopes for the future. It was Penny who said she’d like five children, but Michael who said, let them not all be boys!I struggled initially with Bridge of Clay – the writing confused me, and I couldn’t get into the flow of the story. I put it aside for a few days, then picked it up again today. Straight away I was into the lives of the Dunbar boys, and couldn’t put it down, and although it jumps around, it’s easy to catch the links. The publisher’s words best sum it up – “Here is a story told inside out and back to front.” Aussie author Markus Zusak has had Bridge of Clay coming for our reading pleasure for some years now – I’m glad it’s finally here. Recommended. (make sure you have tissues at the ready!)

I've been waiting a loooong time for a new Markus Zusak book, and was so excited to read 'Bridge of Clay'... now I'm not going to lie, it started off a bit slow, and the writing style threw me off at first. But after the first few chapters, you pick up how it's supposed to flow. By the 4th chapter - I couldn't put it down... and by the end I was crying and in love. It's absolutely worth the time to get to know the 'boys'... and 'Bridge of Clay' unfolds into an an amazingly emotional and fulfilling read. Highly recommend!

I really wanted to like this book as I loved Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief but I’m sorry to say it was impossible. Bridge of Clay was impossible for me to finish. I forced myself to stay with it but by the halfway mark I began to skip pages in hope of finding some sense to the story. I really couldn’t follow the way this story is told. To me it was disjointed and confusing. I felt the author tried too hard. The locations were hard to understand and the characters just never come to life. The timeline is all over the place. There was never a point at which I began to care about these people. Too often it was if the author lost his way and his line of thought resulting in a bunch of half explored events. When I first looked through this book my first thought was to return it. I went as far as requesting a return shipping label. I should have gone with my first impression. I’m sorry to say I was unable to finish the book. I could not recommend it.
