And that's saying a lot. I have to agree with him, tutors are more influential than teachers. Teachers are talking to larger groups thereby having little influence in a classroom but a tutor has one on one influence and can teach more and teach better. If you can buy anything by Blumenfeld you're going to bless your childrens lives. My 5 year old reads by herself and is on her way to doing cursive. Thanks Samuel for verifying what I already knew and for giving us great tools to navigate our childs important education.

The content of the book is excellent. I downloaded the Kindle version, and found that the student material in the reading lessons is in very small type (about 6 point). There is no way to enlarge it, either. I can make the font much larger, but the student material remains the same size.

I have been looking for a book that was easy to follow and gave me an easy way to teach the basic "reading, writing and arithmetic".This book is simple and yet gives enough information that you can add your own choice of books to fulfill the needs to learn and use these tools well.

An excellent resource--not just how to teach by why. Useful for both parents of children in traditional settings and homeschoolers alike. If I had to teach my child on a deserted island, I would want my Bible first and this book second.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. For a child (or even an adult beginning to read an ESL student), I suggest starting with the Jolly Songs book and CD (there is a UK and US version, so make sure you get the appropriate one) for the phonics. The brief songs are set to children's classics and stick in the brain. (Which sometimes drives me crazy as they go round on a loop in my head, but proves it works.)Then start using this book!It contains lists of words starting with the easiest first, divided into groups with similar spellings.I work with a young ESL student who resists reading and writing in general. When his school gives spelling words grouped by topic or use in a book, he can learn them, but with some work. He struggles to learn to spell about 10 words a week that way. Using this book, in 4 lessons a week, he can easy pick up several hundred words. Some of the words in the lists are more obscure, so we don't focus on them for vocabulary, but he does learn how to spell them with ease. When I've gone off this system and concentrated on the school's curriculum, my student's reading and spelling stagnates and he becomes frustrated. Using this he moves ahead dramatically and with ease. Plus, while it might seem boring to read and write lists of words (I sure thought it would), he and other students with problems actually enjoy it! If one lesson combines words with similar sounds, but different spelling, such as "nce" and "nse" words, I divide those into two lessons, but can combine that day's lesson with other lessons where the spelling is consistent and easy for him.I haven't used the sections on handwriting or math, even so, it is worth it for the reading and spelling alone. That said, I do have some criticism, but not of the author--the publisher. The first book I received wasn't bound well and fell apart immediately. The seller was kind and took care of it promptly. And if they sell enough copies, they really need to find a new printer. The print quality is terrible. Lower case i's sometimes look like l's, etc. But the material is so good I've taken the time to retype all the lists for my students. Plus, the author's information is also valuable, it is not simply lists of words. Also, the appearance of the material (the way it is formatted) is rather dated looking. To glance at this book, you might dismiss it. That would be a huge error.BUY THIS BOOK! You will not regret it. Developmental scientists, such as Bruce McCandliss, have proven that drilling the reading of groups of words like this is able to spur far faster gains in learning.I honestly do not think you will find a better resource for teaching reading and spelling with ease.

I was disappointed to see that the book is geared to beginning reading and beginning math for very young children. I was searching for a book of principles on how to tutor any age.The book looks like just the thing for starting your little children on the right learning path.

Great resource tool! Really comes in handy!

Love the book! It has helped me not only work with my kids but other kids as well.
