A very enjoyable introduction to growing and understanding moss in horticulture. Has detailed instructions and nice ideas for displaying moss bonsai and moss gardens.

The book is beautifully done. The pictures and the tutorials are great. I wish it had a better index of "ingredients" and where to purchase them from.

Do NOT give this book to teens! I am a youth pastor and reject this book as helpful.Background of me: I read it as a 16-year-old and it skewed my view for years as to how to find a spouse. (I'm 29 now and happily married, though at age 24 had a relationship end horribly, with unneeded and drawn out pain afterward, in part I attribute to the teachings of this book that were the foundations of that relationship. Also a bad book for teens: "When God Writes Your Love Story" by Eric and Leslie Ludy).I am all for Christian purity. I am a youth pastor as I said. When this book emphasizes "be pure and holy", I couldn't agree more! BUT, when this book teaches that to every person you date you give a portion of your heart, I whole-heartedly disagree! (pardon the pun!) They essentially teach that if you date someone and don't marry them, you've given them half your heart, and you only have 50% of a heart for your spouse. Thus, the natural conclusion is for any thinking teen "I must only date one person! Thus, I must marry my first boyfriend/girlfriend!" You know what that leads to? EITHER never allowing yourself to date someone until you know you can marry them (which is the real point of dating, isn't it?), OR not allowing yourself to break-up with someone you should break-up with but marrying them instead! Both awful!When someone has a child, they love them 100%. When they have a second child, do they love them each 50%? No! They love them both 100%. Love is exponential. You can love a girlfriend/boyfriend 100%, and have it not lead to marriage, and then still love your future spouse 100%. The fundamental basis for this book is flawed.My entire generation of Christians have been scared to date and thus struggling to find spouses because of books like this one and "When God Writes Your Love Story."As a youth pastor (and grad of The Master's Seminary), I fully recommend NOT buying this book for your teens.

There are better books on Christian relationships than Harris' book. I was reluctant to write a review until I learned Harris himself is now indirectly involved in a sex scandal that caused him to step down from his pastoral work. I felt some unease about his message, and after I decided one day to google "Josh Harris Sex Scandal", I now I feel compelled to discourage Christians from buying into what he is selling.As I read the book, I thought to myself, "this reads like some kid in high school writing stuff down and who can't think coherently." Worse, he somehow suggests his courtship model is somehow ordained by God and that if couples follow it, they're somehow guaranteed a happily-ever-after relationship. I knew it was scam book, and at the time of its publication it was the latest rage in some churches. One zealous loudmouth at church preached it as "God's way" for everyone. He and his girl friend followed it to the letter, evangelized with it for a while until they got divorced 4 years later.Should Christians Kiss dating goodbye? The Bible doesn't give a simple formula for courtship. If anything I've been struck by the variety of ways God unites couples, and sometimes its pretty sordid. God had Hosea marry a whore, God killed Ezekiel's cherished wife, God united Isaac with Rebecca through a miracle, Jacob fell in love with Rachel's beauty, God had Esther herded into a kings harem, Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines, and Ruth spruced herself up and laid down at Boaz's feet while he was about to sleep. Godly men like Jeremiah and Daniel did not find wives. The unspoken implication of Harris' book is that if one is not happily married, one somehow failed to do things God's way, and God's way is Harris' courtship model. The Bible doesn't really say there is a method, except to say it is ultimately by God's blessing, and to make decisions wisely and not to be yoked with an unbeliever.I taught a Bible study to college age students. Ironically by the end of the school year the numbers had risen and I had an abundance of 19-year-old girls attending. I expressed my critical view of Harris' book and warned them that God doesn't promise happily ever after. They should simply live a pure life because it pleases God, not because it would land them prince charming (as Harris book insinuates). If they do marry, I told them to choose wisely, and that means asking basic questions like -- how many kids do you want, where do you want to live, will you travel for the husband or wife's career, etc. There is much wiser counsel from other books than Harris' book.At the time I wondered if I was doing the right thing by dissuading them form Harris' book. Now in retrospect, given the divorces of some of his most devoted advocates, I'm glad I suggested other books. This was about 11 years ago before e-harmony came around and Neil Clark Warren had commercialized his work, but Warren's book listed down all the questions people should ask themselves and each other before getting involved. Ben Young's "Ten Commandments of Dating" was very sensible, but Warren's book was the most well conceived based on Warren's decades of private practice in dealing with couples.

Really good book. My daughter really hasrecommended this book since she read it.

As an avid long-time reader of Gould's essays, this is by far one of my most favorite collections. Essays such as Nonmoral Nature, Hutton's Purpose, Worm for a Century, Stinkstones of Oeningen, Evolution as Fact and Fancy, and Science and Jewish Immigration (as well as most of the other essays) really touch on issues that encompass all of science including the nature of morality, the essential qualities of scientific thinking, and the structure and biases of the human mind. Although these essays predate the formalization of Gould's concept of NOMA (Non-overlapping magisteria), many of the ideas discussed in these essays form its basis. Sound arguments can be made countering the NOMA concept but Gould's ideas are still worth reading. The many pithy quotes in these essays make the reading particularly enjoyable (e.g., "We may wallow forever in the thinkable; science traffics in the doable.").

A Harvard education for a couple bucks. I started with Bully for Brontosaurus that I picked up at a seaman's book exchange for free. Gould [deceased] was a Harvard professor that taught geology and natural history and his books are a collection of essays that were mostly printed in "Nature" and other periodicals. With no background in either subject and having never seen the periodicals, I find the essays very readable, informative, and filled with "wow" moments; I never knew that, I never considered that, that's amazing, etc. Gould sometimes wanders into the political arena [Mismeasure of Man]and has a strong point of view on evolution which sometimes wanders into the political but that aside the essays are superb and very readable. I'm on my fourth Gould book now [Hen's Teeth] and by the time I read them all I figure I've had at least an "Introduction to Geology and Natural History" from Harvard for less than $50. A background in the subjects isn't required to enjoy the essays. As an added bonus Gould introduces the reader to other works. Darwin's Worms isn't something I would have read without Gould's essay. Enough said; as a tip, you can buy Gould's books used on Amazon from different dealers for as low as a penny and a couple bucks shipping. I should have three of them waiting for me at the next mail drop. All of Gould's books are available on Kindle for $9.99 or less. Those I've read I'll drop at a book exchange as payback or leave in a laudromat.

I just finished this volume and have three others stacked up and ready. I enjoy Gould's writing and Hen's Teeth . . . was great. I'm never too old to learn and his way with our language and science history is stimulating. Many of the discoveries he discusses have slipped past our shallow media. Don't miss this one!

The book itself is very small but Gould's writing is excellent. His indirect lessons about the concepts of evolution are interesting and well presented. Anyone who is even mildly interested in science would enjoy this.

I have liked all Stephen Jay Goulds writings. This was one of his early books, and I think one of his best. I would recommend it highly.

Some listed facts are off.Firstly this IS a very cool comic, but there are a few discrepancies noted here.The book has 96 pages - not 120. Also the dimensions are 10 3/4 X 8 1/4One other note is it is entirely in Black & White - except for the cover.

Powerhouse is a lot of fun and Basil Wolverton is one of the very greatest and most imaginative comics artist ever. It's kind of a pre underground comic with elements of the old men's magazines. i treasure my copy

Earlier in my life I'd have given this lovely little reprint edition a higher grade. But despite the beautiful reproduction of the cover of the original Powerhouse Pepper #3 on the cover, the interiors are the same bunch of late Pepper stories from the Abe Goodman public domain-ish cheesecake/joke magazines that have been making the rounds for the last few years, and unless you are a rabid completist, you do not need this well-produced magazine in your collection.

To me.Wolverton's art is stretchy, sort of proto-Robert Crumb, and his use of language is nauseating. I love this man! I love this book! It's a bargain. GET IT!!!! Wolverton is to comics what Shakespeare is to the English language.
