Plantagenet Ancestry of the Seventeenth Century is an excellent reference book for those researching their family trees. It helps to make connections between early colonial families to the Plantagenets. The book lists the various colonial family names at the beginning that have Plantagenet ancestors. From this list one only has to look the name up in the index to find which page traces a specific the line of descent.

This is not a book to read. This is a book to trace lineages. The book meets its purpose well. For those with reading eye sight issues, the smaller font can be a strain.

Very useful to anyone doing American or English genealogy that involves known Plantagenet roots. Easy to use and we'll researched.

I am thrilled with this book. For a genealogist, this is wonderful. The seller sent it promptly and it was packaged well. Very pleased.

Excellent resource. Goes well with the Royal Ancestry / Plantagenet Ancestry series by Douglas Richardson. Solid research and well sourced.

I have been looking through the pages of this book. I have found that my 15th Great Grand Father's was a Master of the Arts, and was held in high regard. My own investigation into my ancestors have been clarified.

Overwhelmingly useful. Just what I needed.

Difficult to get around in. You have to always refer to the index to locate persons you are interested in.

The Random House Book of Stories from the Ballet, by Geraldine McCaughrean

From Publishers Weekly

From Swan Lake to The Sleeping Beauty, the plots of 10 beloved ballets (The Nutcracker, The Firebird, Giselle, etc.) are set forth in Geraldine McCaughrean's dramatic prose in The Random House Book of Stories from the Ballet; Angela Barrett's finely detailed artwork-elaborate borders, evocative spot pictures and full-page paintings-ranges from haunting to comic (Random, $18, 126p, ages 9-12 ISBN 0-679-87125-X Aug.).Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6?Plot summaries from 10 classical ballets, all of them major crowd-pleasers such as Swan Lake, Coppelia, and The Nutcracker. The most recent ballets covered are Romeo and Juliet, Petrouchka, and The Firebird. The reteller presents them as short stories complete with dialogue and thoughts. She does a credible job of briefly and accurately presenting the plots in a way that should hold the interest of readers who have no background on the subject. Barrett's handsome illustrations have a 19th-century, old-fashioned look. They include lots of period detail, and are done predominately in pastels, gold, orange, and dark blue. They look just like ballets in their detailed design and pretty colors. Louis Untermeyer's Tales from the Ballet (Golden Press, 1968; o.p.) covers more ballets (and more modern ones) with briefer plot summaries, while Jane Rosenberg's Dance Me a Story (Thames and Hudson, 1985; o.p.) describes the same ballets as McCaughrean, but in greater detail, and her book is aimed more at serious young dance students. McCaughrean's volume compares well with both of those titles and should enrich any collection.?Kay McPherson, Central Atlanta-Fulton Public Library, GACopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

If you're a dancer or regular ballet-goer, you're probably familiar with all the stories covered by this book; but if you don't know much about ballet, or have a child beginning ballet, this is a beautiful book to start with. It covers the most famous ballet stories, like The Nutcracker and Swan Lake, as well as many popular but not generally known ballets like Giselle. The illustrations are beautiful, so even if you're familiar with all the stories, if you're a ballet fan you may still want to add this to your collection. BTW, as soon as I can I'll add a list of all the stories told in this collection.

Pictures are quite nice, but not many. Would've liked a few more, but the stories seemed pretty good.

My daughter loves this book. She is 8 and read it cover-to-cover when it got here.

First of all let me state this is not a murder-by-murder rehash of John Wayne Gacy's crimes. The only crime that is covered is his last one, the murder of Robert Piest. The book is told through the words of one of Gacy's attorneys, Sam Amirante. A good portion of the book delves into the confused personality or personalities of Mr. Gacy, and whether he understood the difference between right and wrong when he committed his crimes. Author Amirante takes us into the courtroom and provides insight into jury selection as seen through the eyes of the defense as he tries to read what is going through the minds of the potential jurists. Gacy's jury came from the city of Rockford, Illinois, and brought to Chicago for the trial. Much of the book is courtroom drama, and if this appeals to you I'm sure you will enjoy the book.Gacy faced an uphill battle since birth with a father he was unable to please and bullied by others. As an adult he could charm a puff adder out of a tree with his glad handing and ear-to-ear grin. He could be a blowhard and braggart claiming to know several important people, even having his photograph taken with President Carter's wife. However, his dark side took over when he would offer employment to teenagers in his contracting business. How he managed to murder and dispose of so many individuals and go undetected is still difficult to imagine. As I mentioned those interested in reading about how a courtroom is conducted will find this book to be especially interesting since it is told through the eyes of one of Gacy's attorneys. Even if you feel this wouldn't especially appeal to you I think you may find it more interesting than you may expect. The case boils down to whether or not Gacy was insane or not. Examples on both sides are given by the defense and the prosecution.Gacy, as you well know, was executed for his crimes on May 19, 1994, with his final words reputed to be, "Kiss my ass."

This is a very interesting account of the Gacy trial from written by one of his defense attorneys. I've often wondered how and why people can defend people like Gacy (and Bundy, and Gein, and so on) and this made me think about how important the right to a fair trial is, regardless of the accused or the crime.

The author was so clear and concise about his motivations for defending Gacy. His devotion to the law and preserving human rights as afforded by the law is admirable. His writing is so good he just drags you along with him in the turmoil of the discovery, preparation and trial. If I would have recused myself, on the basis of what I knew and I would have run. But, Sam believes in the law so much that he was willing to have his life turned upside down and defend a man who actually committed one of the most horrific crimes in our history. He was steadfast and earnest in his convictions. I truly admire him. That being said this could have been a very boring procedural, but the author wrote it in a style that draws you in and make you care what happens next. I ended up buying this because I went to the look inside feature on the site, and Sam's writing hook me immediately.

I wouldn't say that I liked the book it was interesting to read.I only wanted to find out about his childhood to adult to find out what made him do what he did.The book is well written by his lawyer with the whole court case and I found out what I wanted to know. There are many black/white pictures in the book. No young teenager should read this book.To think that this all started with a phone call to a friend by asking "Sam, could you do me a favor?"

There were many borderline reviews of this book, and I wasn't sure I was going to read it. I thought it was an interesting story about an incomprehensible criminal, written by someone who knew him. I did not feel like the author was defending himself, as many people seemed to think. He did a job that most people would not be able to do. He made a name for himself.I was pleased that there was not a lot of explicit gore, or photos.

I’ve read a LOT of true crime books over the years, Im kinda hooked on them, although I have hard time describing why, even to myself. It’s always a toss up though when you grab a new author off the shelf, whether they’ll be dull and boring, go too much in depth, or not enough, I’m not sure what’s worse in those cases. This book however is something extremely special in the true crime genre, where you get an author who actually plays a part in their own story. Having that unique factor just gives the tale some extra credence and certainly gives the reader a fuller feeling when your reading the book. It’s a shame the authors of this book didn’t write any others, but I guess after a book like this, and the perspective they are able to give, anything else may just not shine in any kind of comparisons. One of the best true crime books I’ve ever read and worth every cent.

This book offers incredible insight to the workings of attorneys working to defend a client they know is guilty. Their only option is to try to convince the jury that their client was insane at the time he committed these crimes. Ameranti and Motta do a superb job trying to convince the jury that their client is insane. To readers who have read "Killer Clown" by Terry Sullivan, you will find extraordinary coverage of the "other side" of the stories that Sullivan leaves blank simply because Sullivan's versions do not cover Gacy's side of the story. One example is when Ameranti shows up at Gacy's house after the 2nd search warrant, Sullivan simply states that Ameranti is told "not too politely to leave", where you will find in Amirante's book an f- word laden exchange between the cops and Sam. This is just one example of many that makes this book a perfect complement to "Killer Clown" and also sheds light in the mysterious workings of the mind of John Wayne Gacy. The Catholic Ameranti is able to bring out the Satan that was inside the mind of Gacy. This book is well worth the read for True Crime fans ans also how Satan does his work, silently and with guile right under the noses of a teaming metropolis like Chicago. Where will he strike next ? Ameanti leaves that question open ?

it tells you more than you thought you needed to know. However, it is information that you really do need to know when starting a big project as building a new museum. This is a project that a group of us are undertaking and needed advise. This is the place, in this book.

I work at a historic society/museum with hopes of expansion; this book is currently sitting in a prime desktop location and has been tremendously helpful as we dream about the future. This user-friendly, straight-forward guide is a handy tool for those of us who work or volunteer in museums but lack formal facilities management or construction experience. We still have a few years to go before we're ready for a full-out capital campaign and addition, but it's already proven itself handy as a general reference as we get our building ducks in a row. I've also recommended it to board members who have questions about what an expansion involves.

Drawing on their years of experience with small and mid-sized museums in Minnesota, the authors of Building Museums provide a step-by-step guide to museum building projects. It is especially important for smaller museums where there are limited resources, both of money and manpower, and the existing staff and board members need to become "experts on museum buildings". The book lays out in clear non-specialist terms everything that needs to be done, from assembling a Building Committee to developing a budget to working with architects and contractors to surviving the actual construction process and moving into a new (or newly renovated) space. Of particular value is the chapter on Museum Environment, which lays out the specific needs of a museum (as opposed to any other type of building) including environmental and security issues. This chapter is a must-read for any architect or engineer that wants to work with a museum.

As our small museum needs to prepare our 1905 office building for display use, this book gives much practicle advice for undertaking the project.

Pertinent for small museums. There is little on this subject so this is valuable resource. It is practical, usable. Wish it had been available at the beginning of our project.

Building Museums helps organizations navigate the complexities of construction projects--both those renovating existing buildings or those creating new ones. Herskovitz, Glines, and Grabitske guide readers through all project phases from planning, to design, to construction, to the grand opening. Authors present material in an easy-to-read format, pairing narrative with helpful framing questions and keys to success throughout. Appendices help navigate difficult topics like reading blueprints and commonly used abbreviations for those without formal architectural training. Especially helpful are the sections pertaining to lighting, HVAC systems, fire suppression systems, and off-gassing. Ever wonder what the ideal height above floor and distance from wall is for mounting light fixtures to avoid glare and shadows? Curious as to the differences between forced hot air, radiant heat, and fan coil with forced air HVAC systems? Unsure if you should install wet pipe, dry pipe, or water mist fire suppression systems? Building Museums defines each system succinctly, explains their pros and cons, and mixes in helpful graphics whenever possible.I work at an organization that provides both grant funding and professional development training to museums and historical societies. We're glad to have added Building Museums to our organization's lending library and will recommend this book wholeheartedly to organizations coming to us for questions.

The Illinois Heritage Association circulating library contains a new book that offers practical guidance for museum staff and volunteers involved in museum construction or renovation. Building Museums: A Handbook for Small and Midsize Organizations, by Robert Herskovitz, Timothy Glines, and David Grabitske (Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2012), is an invaluable resource. Like a true guidebook, the 8 ½" x 11" paperback volume takes you step-by-step through the journey, from imagining your project to moving in to the new structure and adjusting to new surroundings. Every aspect of the process is covered in 179 pages, including assembling a building committee; listing spatial requirements; paying for the project; developing the design and addressing regulatory codes; gathering construction documents and going through the bid process; and constructing, evaluating, and documenting the building. The finished structure is not the end of the line, however; the book details how to orchestrate the move into the new or newly renovated museum and how to celebrate with a grand opening. Two appendixes follow the eight chapters in the book. One appendix outlines museum spaces organized by function. The other tells how to read blueprints and how to understand specifications and schedules; it includes examples of plans, section drawings, architectural and electrical symbols, and symbols for piping and piping fittings, valves, and electrical systems. Toward the end of the volume there are lists of abbreviations used in mechanical and electrical drawings. Building Museums concludes with a glossary of terms one might encounter as the building or renovation project progresses, along with suggestions for further reading. The volume is indexed and generously illustrated.People who are neither architects nor involved in the building trades may find the prospect of serving on a building committee to be a daunting task. Building Museums might have been titled Building Confidence, because this is exactly what the book accomplishes. It provides a solid foundation on which to build--literally.
