I can see why this is a favorite of children and young adults. It is fun for adults who have had some mythology education. It is especially for boys.I am thankful that the library was able to loan both the Kindle version and the Overdrive Audio version. I felt like I could relate with the main character with his dyslexia and ADHD. That is part of the reason I have to have both medias going for me to stay with it. My eyes didn't track well when I was younger, but now I have a harder time. Now, if only the book was about a girl...

I bought this book because it was on one of those $.99 lists and I thought, "What the heck." This book took me back 50 years to some of my first pre-teen adventure books, e.g. the Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The book is written from the standpoint of the protagonist who is pretty much a current pre-teen (I have 2 and one teen) with a wry irreverent sense of humor, as have many of the characters, "We don't say the "c" word." It's not the "c" word you think. The book is fun and fast moving and if you have teen/pre-teens you will recognize a fair amount of their behavior while chuckling at them. The adults are also somewhat caricatures of the typical adult, but probably as many pre-teens see us.It's fun. If you are an adult read it with your pre-teen, early teen as something to do together or in the car on a trip. You may surprise yourself that you have really enjoyed it.

A flash of lighting shatters the night sky, almost angry. Maybe Zeus is still mad. If you didn’t know about that, then you should really check out the Percy Jackson books. When you read about Percy Jackson’s adventures, like all other awesome books, you feel like you are the main character. You feel like you’ve beheaded a hydra, blown up the Gateway arch, and held a lightning bolt in your hand. The story starts with Percy warning us about reading it. Like something about if you find something familiar, then close the book immediately. Um, I read it on a Kindle, how can you close a Kindle? Then it goes on about his life. When his mom takes him on a vacation to the beach away from his abusive stepfather, she tries to get him to a camp to stop a minotaur from killing him. Yeah, a minotaur. On the way there, he finds his best friend has goat legs. Like a lot of other stories, Percy loses consciousness. When he wakes up, he finds himself in a camp full of half-gods, satyrs, a centaur, and a god of wine that always says peoples’ names wrong. Then he finds that the minotaur has sent his mother to the underworld and he has killed the minotaur. When he finds out he is the son of the sea god, Zeus gives him a death threat because he thinks that Percy took his most powerful lightning bolt. Then Percy has to go on a quest along America, fighting monsters, metal spiders, and medusa. And then into the underworld. When he does, he finds a terrible mistake…and a traitor. But enough about that! I don’t want to give you too many spoilers.I actually watched the (TERRIBLE!) movie about Percy Jackson before I read the book. After I read the book and watched the movie again, I decided that I would never watch the movie again. (Seriously, make a note: Never watch the Percy Jackson movie). The book is infinite times better, and in my opinion they ruined everything when they made the movie.Yes, I own all of the Percy Jackson books, and all of the Heroes of Olympus, the next series. Rumor has it that there is another series about norse gods and heroes. As Dionysus would say, “You’ve heard of Peter Johnson. Now, get ready for Magno Cheese.” (Magnus Chase)

My 10 year old son has read everything by Rick Riordan and absolutely LOVES the series. These books are good enough to tear him away from his iPod and keep him waiting by the mailbox for the next book to arrive! Now I'm reading them too, and we have dinner conversation about Greek mythology and American history. Recommended for any young person learning the joy of books!

I knew of the series because of the movies being released and being a big Harry Potter fan, similar genres. When my son and I finished the HP series we went looking for something else. The Percy series really hit the spot. No spoilers for the story, but the book also made my son curious about mythology.

This was a book that my son was eager to read. This was a required reading for 5th grade and he finished it pretty quickly. This is the beginning of the series and Percy Jackson is a very interesting book. I love that it's good for all ages, I enjoyed it as well.Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is on the most dangerous quest of his life. With the help of a satyr and a daughter of Athena, Percy must journey across the United States to catch a thief who has stolen the original weapon of mass destruction — Zeus’ master bolt. Along the way, he must face a host of mythological enemies determined to stop him. Most of all, he must come to terms with a father he has never known, and an Oracle that has warned him of betrayal by a friend.

The Lightning Thief is the first book in the Percy Jackson series. It is fast paced, well-written, and full of loveable, believable characters -- even if they are children of gods. This whole series is an excellent read for anyone, and a choice pick for parents who are looking for exciting, fun, clean books for both boys and girls to read.As a school librarian, I could rarely keep this book on the shelf more than half a day. As a grandparent, I've gifted it to the grandkids, and even given copies to adult friends. It is one of those rare finds these days: a truly well-written, good book with a universal theme that still manages to be fresh.

While this book is intended for a younger set, I, an older set, still enjoyed the adventures of the accused lightning thief, Percy Jackson. This tale was interesting, convoluted and moved along at an enjoyable pace. One learns quite a bit about the Greek and Roman Gods as the pages are perused and you try to puzzle out how he is going to get out of the predicament he currently was in only to end up in one after another. It was a nice read.

Review

"All the energy of a riotous family fiesta. . . . Cisneros is undeniably at her peak.” –The Washington Post"A glorious book, Caramelo is crowded with the souvenirs and memories of the dramas of everyday life…like an oversized family album, intimate as well as universal."—The Philadelphia Inquirer"A joyful, fizzy American novel. . . Soulful, sophisticated and skeptical, full of great one-liners, it is one of those novels that blithely leap across the border between literary and popular fiction.” –New York Times Book Review"Like Eduardo Galeano, John Dos Passos and John Steinbeck, Cisneros writes along the borders where the novel and social history intersect. In this lovingly told and poetic novel, she uses the storytelling art to give the voiceless ones a voice, and to find the border to the past, imbuing the struggles of her family and her countries with the richness of myth.” –Los Angeles Times“A wonderful book . . . evoking life’s absurdity and possibility, tragedy and transcendence. . . . Combines the thematic richness of the most ambitious literature with the delight in character and plot of the most engrossing page-turner.” –Chicago Sun-Times“Cisneros is a writer for all people. This is a novel of families, home life and finding yourself in the world’s greater landscape.” –USA Today“A sprawling, exuberant hopscotch through a century of family history. . . . Cisneros seduces us with her knitted tales, great and small, and her message is all the more powerful for its shimmering clarity.” –Time Out New York“Cisneros has a great eye for detail, a good ear for dialogue and a marvelous sense of humor. . . Caramelo is a tour de force–rich in its use of language, breathtaking in scope.” –St. Louis Post-Dispatch “Lovingly, passionately woven from dust and glory. . . A sweeping family history that somehow manages to interlace not just the Reyeses -- those conjurers, enticers and troublemakers -- but also all the rest of us, the good and bad together, the bitter and, of course, the sweet.” –Miami Herald “Sprawling, spirited. . . Vibrant and big-hearted.” –Elle“Cisneros’s exuberant prose tickles the senses. . . A warm and generous story to wrap yourself up in.” –St. Petersburg Times “A sweet gift from the universe, a reminder of the ancient, deep, noble, and sad sources of the human heart. . . sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes transcendent.” –San Antonio Express“Cisneros is a virtuoso. . . [Caramelo] is rich in character and action, people and passions.” –Houston Chronicle“Remarkable. . . . Caramelo is a book to read slowly and savor and if you can find a listener, to read out loud.” –Santa Fe New Mexican“Cisneros is such an imaginative storyteller. . . Caramelo engages in a kind of playfulness that is utterly bewitching.” –Entertainment Weekly“Spellbinding. . . A richly satisfying novel.” –People“There should be a brand-new language to describe the ways in which [Cisneros] has imbued the ancient art of story-telling with her trademark organization, characterization, evocation of time and place, portrayal of a particular culture, and visionary wisdom. . .You must read this book for yourself, two or three times.” –The Women’s Review of Books “Cisneros is a wonderful cultural translator, writing English dialogue so saturated with Mexican-Spanish idioms and constructions that you feel like you’ve been magically empowered to eavesdrop in another language.” –The Oregonian

From the Inside Flap

Every year, Ceyala "Lala" Reyes' family--aunts, uncles, mothers, fathers, and Lala's six older brothers--packs up three cars and, in a wild ride, drive from Chicago to the Little Grandfather and Awful Grandmother's house in Mexico City for the summer. Struggling to find a voice above the boom of her brothers and to understand her place on this side of the border and that, Lala is a shrewd observer of family life. But when she starts telling the Awful Grandmother's life story, seeking clues to how she got to be so awful, grandmother accuses Lala of exaggerating. Soon, a multigenerational family narrative turns into a whirlwind exploration of storytelling, lies, and life. Like the cherished "rebozo, or shawl, that has been passed down through generations of Reyes women, Caramelo is alive with the vibrations of history, family, and love.

Cisneros has been a favorite writer of mine for many years. It started when I read and then taught portions of House on Mango Street to middle school students. It is amazing to read and feel personal connections with a text as a Mexican American who grew up in south Texas. While her subject, setting and characters strike a chord with me on a cultural level, it is her imagery and use of figurative language that thrill me as a reader. That is not to say that the message and the generational insight on family relationships are not well developed and profound, but to find a powerful message presented with equally powerful display of word-craft is praiseworthy.

I read "The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros, and had enjoyed it. However, I had not read any of her other novels until I came upon this one. I found the title in a reading list at the back of another book, "How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents" by Julia Alvarez. This book is interesting to me on many levels. First, it delves deeply into a complicated family relationship. Many of the themes resonate with me, because they remind me of my own family. My grandparents were immigrants from Italy, and the family dynamics between Italian families and Latino families are so similar. Perhaps that is because of the immigrant experience, as well. This book explores those relationships against the backdrop of a Mexican family that emigrated to the U.S. So intertwined with family themes are all of the struggles of adapting to and living in a different country..specifically, Latino/Mexican struggles. In order to explore these themes, the writer goes back in time as the granddaughter of the family, trying to learn more about her family's past.I really loved this book for it's study of familial relationships, as well as it's focus on one Latino family's experience in the U.S.I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Latino culture, the experiences of immigrants, as well as anyone who also has complicated family relationships and seeks to understand these more. The book keeps your attention, and is very funny and entertaining in many parts, as well.

For me, this book started a bit slow... in all honesty I nearly put it down after 40-50 pgs. However, there's truly much to like. Insightful engaging stories that not only give great insight into Mexican and Mexican-American culture/history, but also life in general. So many passages and quotes that stirred my spirit and imagination. Awesome for your soul, you heart and head.Only caveat is some of the stories didn't grab me or hold me and I felt like after a while I began to skim some pages. Only reason I give it a 4 star, not 5.

Sandra Cisneros has a way of enveloping the reader into the vivid, honest world of a girl who has to keep her pains and thoughts to herself in a world where the voices of young girls go unheard. Funny, wild, heartbreaking, and entertainingl, Caramelo is fast-paced and filled with adventures and accurate representations of Mexican culture. She's truly an underappreciated, talented writer whose work deserves more recognition. I will forever cherish this book, along with Woman Hollering Creek and The House on Mango Street. Give this book a chance!

Sandra Cisneros is an exquisite writer. Caramelo is a big book with a large heart that transports you to a world rich and wonderful. Caramelo and her immediate family visit their relatives in Mexico every year. The transition from Caramelo's American life and her heritage in Mexico inspires her imagination as she discovers her heritage and the diversity of beauty in the world. Cisneros uses language to highlight the diversity so be prepared for a book peppered with untranslated Spanish. Even if you don't know a word of the language, it enhances and reveals. Caramelo is highly recommended as one of the best novels of our times. If you haven't already, be sure to also read Cisneros' House on Mango Street.

Had to read this for my Ethnic Lit. class. I don't usually read fictional biographies so the only time I do it's for a class. However, I very much enjoy this book. The writing is beautiful and the sentences are so fluid, expressive, and powerful. I'm so glad to have come across this book. I highly recommend it to everybody.

It is not a "healthy lie"; I really enjoyed this book spanning generations of the Mexican/Hispanic immigrant experience. I lived in South America for six years where my husband is from. It was surprising that there were so many similiarities between Caramelo and people I knew and am related to by marriage. The book does tend to wander, (although I thought it came together well at the end) and I truly wish that someone would have married their sweetheart, but there is still plenty of love in the story and plenty of beautiful, colorful writing. Knowing Spanish made the book come to life since in many cases a dictionary wouldn't be that helpful, but the relationship between the father and daughter as they learn about themselves and where home really is hopefully will still pull non-Spanish speakers through.

This really brought together the Mexican culture I missed out on growing up in the U.S. but inheriting it genetically. There were a lot of mysteries in words my family used in Spanish and things they did that I didn't understand until now.I hope she continues to write such excellent humorous stories. I laughed for hours with this book. Thank you, Sandra

This is a very well written and good book on the topic. However, it is primarily a political study of the fall of the Ottoman Empire in World War I. It is not so much a military study. The author, who teaches at Oxford, has looked at the Ottoman Empire and how it handled World War One. He works in Turkish and Arabic. There are many individual vignettes from individuals at ALL levels of society, from political policy carried on at the highest levels, to the various campaigns and the fighting that resulted. It is well-illustrated volume but includes only a handful of strategic maps of the Empire’s battlefields. The political history is excellent. The author has a firm grasp of the Young Turk movement, the JIHAD aspect of the Turkish war effort and the impact of the Arab on the Turk (and vice-versa). His discussion of the Armenian genocide is balanced and accurate and unlike many studies, does NOT ignore the brutal killing of thousands of Assyrians. An entire chapter is devoted to this and will inhibit sales in Turkey! But it is not so much a military study. The German battlecruiser GOEBEN & British battlecruiser INFLEXIBLE become battleships. The small old French battleship REQUIN becomes a cruiser, HMS AMETHYST becomes French (p137) and Ottoman losses are often based on old Allied accounts. German Admiral Souchon is mentioned once in the book, ignoring his large impact in the Black Sea. Edward Erickson’s I ORDER YOU TO DIE is in the bibliography but seemingly not consulted in some of the areas covered in the book. The Turkish Official military studies appear to be completely missing as well. The author does NOT note that after the Allied naval assault at the Dardanelles, in which they suffered major losses, the Turks were virtually out of artillery ammunition. One of the major postwar hindsight laments was that a second naval assault was not quickly made. The Allied losses could easily be made up while the resupply of vital ammunition was difficult in the extreme. This is a very good book, worth the read, much from the Turkish and Arab point of view. Definitive – no. Would a definitive study be longer – yes (and hence probably not published . . . )

Having read quite a few books this past year on World War I and Scott Anderson's excellent book on Lawrence of Arabia, this book offered a chance to read through many events, but from the Ottoman perspective. As the author mentions, he visited Gallipoli and realized that the Turkish losses at that epic battle are not widely known. Thus, the roots of the author's efforts to address this neglected area of history. The book is very well-written and gives a wide lens to the beginning of the end of the Ottoman Empire through the War itself. Some of the events described herein are pretty well-known, but otherwise I was blown away by how much I had no clue had really taken place. Examples include the Balkan Wars and the Ottoman effort against Italy in 1912-1913. These events influenced later decisions from both the Ottoman and Allied perspective and are well integrated. This is a well-written and easily read history. I found myself many times considering events from an alternate view of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and reading about battles only heard of from the perspective of the victor. This is not juts about Turkish losses, but of Arabs, Armenians, Greeks and others. Even though I am pretty knowledgeable about World War I history, there were many events I had really never heard of before. Even seeing many pictures of Ottoman soldiers in battle was revelatory and unexpected. The First World War was in many ways more cataclysmic than WWII in terms of the changes in the world and this book is a great expository on how that happened. This is an important book and well worthwhile to read for the general reader interested in the subject as well as the academic or policy specialist looking for more information to add to the body of knowledge of even present day Eastern Europe and the Near East. This book is recommended. An excellent companion book is by David Fromkin, A Peace to End All Peace, to read after this book.
