I really enjoyed this new "twist" to a historical book on orphan trains. Thornton and Elise made great characters as well as the supporting characters like Reinhold, Ms. Gray, Ms. Pendleton and others. The contest between the twin brothers Bradford and Thornton was interesting; I liked finding out how early settlement towns were set up and developed along the train lines. I am fairly well read on orphan trains and immigrant issues in the mid 1800s, but Jody Hedlund does a great job presenting more specifics about immigrant living conditions for many before they "head west" and also about the plight of women during this time period. Elise came in as an important character in understanding women's issues whereas Bradford, Thornton, and Mr. Hewitt represented contrasting feelings of men toward the role of women at this time. Loved the story and glad I read it!

I really enjoyed this first book in the Orphan Train series. I'd recommend reading the free prequel, An Awakened Heart, because it gives you the fuller backstory of Elise and her sisters and their dire situation. This book highlighted an interesting aspect of the orphan train movement, focusing on the transport of poor working women from NYC to find jobs in rural Illinois. Elise and Thornton were a good match and I enjoyed their banter, although the romantic tension between them is a little high (which I think this author is known for). They both had to learn to change their misconceptions about each other's social classes. Spiritually, Elise had to learn that God is always there, even through the bad times. Elise's sister, Marianne, has a subplot in this story which will lead to the second book in this series. I listened to this as an audiobook and finished it off in an ebook because I wanted to keep reading faster to see what happened! The audiobook narrator was good although spoke a little slowly in my opinion. Overall, a great first book in the series!

The plot development of this story very much hinges on reading the proceeding novella first. I think it would be hard to get into the characters & story line without it. With that said, I enjoyed the novella & immediately purchased the book for the engaging finish to the story. There are a few grammatical errors but those might be on the e-reader version and not the author's fault. Otherwise, I enjoyed this novel thoroughly.

A different outlook at the times of the orphan trains. I never knew of the placement of women in jobs as part of that movement. Heartwarming story. Looking forward to more from this author. She is a favorite!

Wonderful storyline showing God's timing in the mid-1800's and how He is with us always! The bantering between Elise and Thornton reminds me of my family, full of love and sarcasm! And now the wait begins for the next story, who will be next? Marianne, Sophie, Reinhold, or maybe Fanny?

This was my first novel by Ms. Hedlund and I couldn't put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed her characters and their story. They were believably flawed and yet revealed true character as they grew into the people God intended them to be. I Ioved the subtlety with which Ms. Hedlund developed not only their relationships, but also the underlying story. The godly values that she unfolded in the book were beautifully explained in a way that was wonderfully uplifting. I have no doubt that I will now read every one of her books.

With You Always (2017) by Jody Hedlund is the first novel in her Orphan Train series. This novel comes in all forms including eBook, and is 359 pages in length. With a full-time job and a precocious five-year old at home, With You Always took me three days to read. I purchased an eBook copy of this novel on June 23, 2017 from Amazon to review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own. I give this novel 5+++ STARS. With You Always is a Christian Historical Romance. With You Always is the 9th novel I have read by Jody Hedlund. It will definitely not be the last! Jody Hedlund is a phenomenal writer and storyteller. I was captivated by Elise and Thornton’s story from chapter one, and struggled hard to put this book down. With You Always is incredibly fast-paced and thoroughly engaging. It has everything a reader looks for in great historical fiction: characters dealing with really difficult choices, witty banter, gritty historical accuracy, amazing romance that made my heart SO happy, a few villains who made my blood boil, some really excellent secondary characters, and a great message.I love when I pick up a historical novel and actually walk away from it having learned something. Before this novel, I had never heard of The Children’s Aid Society, Charles Loring Brace, or the Orphan Trains. What a shocking, awful time in our history! From 1854-1929, children were removed from tenements and the streets of New York, and other slum areas, and shipped off to homes out “West” in an attempt to give them a better life. Some of these children were orphans who had no adults in their lives. Some of these children were given up by their parents who could no longer afford to feed and care for them, most of the time through no fault of their own. There are a few moments in With You Always where characters discuss the potential of having to give up their children, or do give up children, to The Children’s Aid Society. These moments really made my heart hurt. The pain the characters feel as they attempt to make the decision to leave their families behind to find work, or to give up children, is so real and palpable. There were several moments I had to work to keep the tears at bay. And, I made my daughter give me lots of extra cuddles. I can’t imagine having to make the decision to leave my family, or to give my daughter away. I am so grateful to God for my family’s protection from these truly awful and painful decisions.Elise is 18, orphaned, and trying to keep her siblings safe and alive. She does make the decision to leave her siblings in the care of someone she trusts so she can move to where employment is. Hedlund does an excellent job of portraying Elise’s sense of guilt and failure at having to leave her siblings in order to find work elsewhere. Elise is an extremely hard worker, so she puts herself into the tasks given to her at her new job, but the niggling sense of guilt that she couldn’t be superwoman and work and care for her family all at the same time overwhelms her. Elise’s feelings are so true to life. I’m in a completely different situation and time period, but I often feel like a failure as a woman because I can’t do it all. Whether you are woman from 1410, 1854, or today, the world tells us we should be able to do it all. When we can’t — because it’s physically impossible! — we take it really hard. I appreciate Elise so much because I totally relate to how she feels in this book.Thornton is wealthy beyond anything Elise, or I, can imagine. He is handsome, kind to a point, and totally “upper-class” brained. At first, I didn’t like Thornton too much. He is “silver-spoon” arrogant, and he treats humans below him in social stature as cheap labor. But, all this changes when he meets Elise. The BEST part of Thornton’s character is that he is willing to change. Watching his transformation over the course of the story is one of the best parts of this book. Elise holds no punches. She is witty and is not afraid to speak truth to Thornton even at the expense of her job. As he gets to know Elise better, she opens his eyes to the men and women who are in his employ. Instead of a cheap labor force, he begins to see just how hard they work for him and he realizes that he needs to become not just a better boss, but a better man. Of all the fictional relationships that I have read in my time, Elise and Thornton may be my most favorite fictional couple. They are sweet towards each other, which made my romance-lovin’ heart happy, but what I really love about them is that they make each other better humans. Isn’t that really the goal every couple should strive for? There is SO much more to discuss with this book — I barely scraped the surface in this review! There is Thornton’s desperate need to please his father, and his eventual realization that the only father he needs to worry about is his Heavenly Father. There is Elise’s trust issues, and her ultimate awareness that running to God is the best option because running from God just makes life, which is already hard, that much harder. And, I didn’t even get to talk about the secondary characters. They are so multifaceted and wonderful. With You Always is jammed-packed with excellent things to discuss!!!With You Always is an AMAZING story. I am so sad that my time with Elise and Thornton is over. I am really going to miss them! If you are looking for an excellently researched, beautifully written historical fiction to devour, then I HIGHLY recommend With You Always. You will not be sad you picked this book to read.

I found this book to be beautifully written and very enjoyable. I liked the historical aspect and the look into the desperate conditions many faced at that time. It was easy to love the characters and to become caught up in their stories......a very satisfying read.

great and informative

THE TWENTY MULE TEAM OF DEATH VALLEY by Ted Faye is a 127-page history book printed on high quality semi-glossy paper. Almost every page has one or two black and white photographs. Under each photo is a narrative of 1-3 sentences. The front cover has a photo of the 20-mule team, where a row of three bells can be seen connected to the two mules in the lead. Behind is the wagon, and on the wagon are two men, the teamster and the swamper (brakeman). The cover photo is sepia-toned, but inside all the photos are black and white. The book has ten chapters, with titles such as: Ch.1. THE WEST'S WHITE GOLD; Ch.2. SHE BURNS GREEN; Ch.3. DEATH VALLEY'S BIG BUSINESS; Ch.4. THE LARGEST WAGONS OF THEIR DAY; Ch.5. THE AMAZING MULE; Ch.6. ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE MILES THROUGH HELL, and so on.THE PHOTOGRAPHS. The photos are all of medium quality, meaning that the range of tones is narrow. There was no attempt to process the photos to increase their contrast or sharpness. Because of the extreme age of some of the photos, e.g., over 100 years old, it is understandable that some of the images are fuzzy. Fortunately, the high quality that was used in the publishing process, that is, use of glossy pages, prevented further deterioration of the images. The photos include the following:(1) Advertisements. These include advertisements for clipper ship travel, wagons for sale, ad for a book about Death Valley, Borax soap, ad for a movie from 1940 called 20 MULE TEAM (see pages 29, 30, 45, 103, 108, 109, 120).(2) Mules and the mule team. Photographs of this subject appear on pages 19, 26, 28, 38, 40-41, 42, 47, 49, 50, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 63, 65, 67, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 76, 77, 78, 82, 83-84, 86, 87, 88-89, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 100, 105, 106, 110-111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 119, 120, 121, 122, 123, 124, 126. Other photographs have horses, not mules. The most astonishing is the 2-page photo on pages 84-85, showing a 20-mule team pulling two wagons up a steep grade. I don't see how even 100 animals could pull these wagons up this type of steep grade on a dirt road. The text (page 79) states that, "a single mule-team load of borax weight about 22 tons."(3) Railroads. Railroad trains or track photos are on pages 55, 86, 94, 98, 99, and 100. Please note that this book occurs in a huge series of books, about various locations in America, and that there are two other books in this series that are devoted to Death Valley, where one of these is devoted to railroads.(4) Photographs of familiar places. I have seen the following places during my six trips to Death Valley in 2013. Searles Valley (page 25), which is where salts other than borax are mined. Zabriski Point (page 28), which is a famous place in Death Valley, however, I don't care for landscapes that consist mainly in erosion. Anybody can see much the same type of erosion on Route 1 in California, when driving south from Half Moon Bay down to Santa Cruz. Remnants of Harmony Borax plant (pages 39, 40-41, 42, 50, 63). Badwater salt flats (page 64). The pentagons and hexagons are fascinating and beautiful, and can make excellent photographs in the sun, in the shade, in early morning, near sunset. Devil's Golf Course (page 64). Out-of-doors museum with wagons (page 126).THE WRITING. Despite the emphasis on elderly photos, it is the case that the writing is engaging and of professional quality. The beginnings of the borax industry are disclosed in Chapter Three, where we read, "William Tell Coleman had been heavily involved in the Nevada borax operations since the early 1870s. When Emile Stevenot's Pacific Borax Company collaped in 1876, Coleman bought it and for a while took over the operation. Later, in 1880, he sold it to Francis Smith. By 1881, Smith was poised t own nearly all of the borax-producing mash facilities, with his primary operations at Fish Lake Valley and Teels Marsh. The relationship of Coleman as distributor and Smith as producer created a formidable business team." (page 31).To provide another example, Chapter Six informs the reader that, "The difficulties and dangers of the Death Valley route were later exploited and exaggerated by the Pacific Coast Borax, as a way to sell soap. For drivers who hauled from 1883 to 1888, the trip had its difficulties but no more than other desert freighting roads . . . there were five sets of wagons coordinated like a well-oiled machine over great distances of the operation, with only two men and 20 animals on each crew. Hitching mules to the wagons was the task of the teamster. The only written account comes from John R. Spears, who . . . saw a short 1--mile haul from borate to Daggett in the 1890s. Spears describes . . . mules are harnessed up in pairs. The most civilized pair are placed in the lead and the next in intelligence just ahead of the tongue, while the sinful, the fun-loving, and the raw-hides fill in between." (page 61)Pages 96 and 97 show excellent quality photographs of tractors. The tractors were bought in 1894, and had steam-traction engines. We read that, "In 1894, Francis Smith purchased a steam-traction engine from the Best Tractor Company, forerunner of today's Caterpillar, Inc., along with two steel-wheeled wagons seen in the photograph. He nicknamed the tractor "Old Dinah" and tried the new outfit on the Borate-to-Daggett run."CONCLUSION. This book is a "must-buy" for any tourists or photographer interested in Death Valley. Also, this book will likely be appreciated by any person interested in the history of California, or in the history of the mining industry. For further details, I recommend the following excellent book. The following book has dense, fact-based writing, similar to that of the Wall Street Journal. And I also recommend the following book to persons interested in California history, or in the mining industry. The book is, THE TINCAL TRAIL:A HISTORY OF BORAX, by N.J. Travis and E.J. Cocks.

This is all a fancy advertisement for software. Does nothing to help a trader understand reading COT data

The Commitment of Trader's has always been one of those "weird things" on a chart for me. It's always late due to how the data flows from the exchanges. In other words it's lagging way behind the markets. Until Lan Turner actually explained which of the three groups of traders is the correct one to be watching I was really not that impressed with the COT. Now, after seeing which one of the COT group that I should be watching it's really helped me understand the importance of the COT. Someone made the comment that it's just a sales piece for his software. That's not a sales pitch; it's an explanation of how to follow the COT using his software. It's very useful info.
