I used these as readers for my late 1st grader/early 2nd grader. I love how many series Cynthia Rylant has done on different reading levels, and Mr. Putter and Tabby were as fun as the others we have used. I have found that my children learn to read better when they love the characters, and they always love Cynthia Rylant's characters. In these books, the characters are cautious Mr. Putter, his very sanguine neighbor Mrs. Teaberry, and their pets, which suit them each perfectly. Each story is gentle and fun. Mr. Putter grits his teeth and goes with Mrs. Teaberry's newest wild scheme, her dog Zeke is crazy, his cat Tabby wants to rest, and Mrs. Teaberry bakes him wonderful goodies. They are kind to each other, and he reminisces about boyhood days... really sweet stories. My son told me when we were going through all of these that reading was his favorite time of day.If you haven't delved into Cynthia Rylant's many series for many reading levels, you can do a google search to figure out which one might work best for where your child's skill level is.

My daughter loves the Mr. Putter series because they have (very short) chapters and seeing Tabby's antics on the page are almost as good as watching cats on youtube. I love them because they are always quiet and calm and depicts great messages like 'think of special ways to make someone else more happy' and 'find pleasure in simple things'. The message in this book is that patience is rewarded mixed with go the extra mile. Some of the other books in the series have more of a plot that not even I could guess what would happen on the next page and this one kind of just kills time in a plodding way but if you're already into the series you'll appreciate it.

Prompt delivery and in excellent condition. Love Mr. Putter and Tabby books!

Mr Potter books are great. The illustrations are cute and my daughters loves reading ‘chapter books’

Love it

My son has recently began wanting more complicated books when we are reading and I found these while searching on Amazon. I purchased them and am very pleased. The story line is simple but follows a natural, building progression that some of the other "early readers" lack. The short simple chapters have allowed me to introduce a more advanced format to my son and I feel has really enabled him to progress to more complicated story concepts.I am looking forward to picking up the rest of the series and would definately recommend it to others.

We love these books and its wonderful to see Mr. Putter reminisce about his birthdays long ago and then enjoy an afternoon with Mrs. Teaberry.

Very cute, not too long and the story was enjoyed by my 6 and 4 yr olds. The pictures make it essential for keeping their interest.

This book was required for my CS class in college, though I can't understand why.My teacher ended up telling us not to use it half way through the semester because all the students complained on how hard it is to read it.It made the topics even more confusing. It's obviously written for people who already know the material, not for students learning the stuff for the first time. The explanations are brief yet complicated. And I also noticed that some contents are outdated. And as some reviewers previously stated, the index is absolutely useless.Overall, I don't recommend using this book to learn, unless you were already taught this stuff before and wanted to go a little deeper.

Required for a class. Content is acceptable, but many times much too brief in definition of scripting functions. Thank goodness for the Internet. Some of the functions, like find, totally were syntactically different than our Solaris version of unix, but that probably is not this book's fault. The table of contents or index does not list the functions, so you better tab your book or get good at a front to back search of the book.Did I mention the typesetting? The function examples are in italics, so the pipes ( | ) have a forward slant such that they look like forward slashes ( / ). When you are learning a new computer language, especially one as inconsistent and syntactically complex as unix (I don't expect this to go unchallenged), you need all the breaks you can get. And, sharpen your eyes to discern the slight slant of the hat on the 1(one) vs. the flat top of the l (el).

I got the first edition of this book in the 1990s and I loved it. Recently (2007), I needed UNIX skills in my job again and I thought, "Why not pick up the latest edition - the 3rd?" Well folks - It is bad.(1) It is poorly printed. Much of the text "fades out" in the low-quality printing they did. Even the binding and physical paper feel cheap when handled.(2) Pages of text are unchanged from the early 1990s - which also seems cheap - except now it's worse, because they've added in typos and even technical errors.(3) The index is so full of errors, it's unusable. Which means, if I want to look something up - forget it.Save your money, folks. The 3rd edition is not worth the high price tag.

Bought for Computer Science class in college. Can't say we would ever buy it as a leisurely read.

Be careful who you purchase a used book from. It should have said the book is in acceptable condition not good! Otherwise the book itself is well explained and recommend for those UNIX beginners

I received the book quickly, and the quality of the book is very good. Just surprised at the location of sender, it is in Taiwan, not California as displayed on the web site. And the shipping label was not clear, the manager of the apartment and I were very, very difficult to read the receiver's name, and almost cannot see the address. Anyway, I think this is good seller based on the time of shipping process and the quality of the book.

I had to port some Windows C/C++ code to Solaris and went to the bookstore hoping to find something that would bring me up to speed with the basic utilities and UNIX concepts from the perspective of a programmer. Bookstore shelves are usually crowded with books that deal with the admin part of Unix but good programming books are a tad harder to find. The first few chapters about the commonly used utilities quickly taught me to navigate the system but a full 4 chapters are devoted to the shell - a general introduction, bsh, ksh and csh - which was too much for me. I skipped the ksh and csh chapters. Also the systems programming chapters goes into a lot of detail about files most of which I already knew. If you, like me are a Windows programmer making a transition to Unix, be prepared to wade through and often skip stuff you already know. The good thing however is that the writing style is lucid and clear and this book is an easy read. Introduction to file permissions(chown etc) is very well written. Examples are clear and well placed. The brief introductions to perl and awk are also useful.Though the price is on the higher side, I think this book is a good buy. Its kept me interested and reading for over a week now and I must say I know so much more Unix for that. If it had been priced say 10-12 dollars lower, I might have given this baby a 4 on 5.

This is an absolutely amazing book. You can read it if you know absolutely nothing about UNIX and learn how to use it. Else you can read it if you are an experienced user and find the reference information you need in a much simpler language than UNIX man pages or 1000-page manuals. The vast amount of information, no redundancy and clear explanations make this book worth every penny spent.Contents of the book were put together were thoughtfully. It contains very comprehensive coverage of features and utilities of UNIX, including very detailed coverage of Bourne, Korn and C shells. Additionally it has very nice introductory chapters on Networking, Internet and X-Windows, just the right amount of information to give a reader solid understanding of the foundations of the topic. Programmers will surely appreciate chapters on UNIX development facilities and systems programming, which contain just the right amount of information to get you to accomplish your tasks without flooding you with unnecessary details. Also, author includes examples for every feature, short enough to effectively illustrate how to use them, which I found very helpful.I personally used this book to teach myself UNIX (I was previously an NT person and didn't know anything about UNIX) and I am now doing hardcore development on Solaris with this book constantly on my desk.

Pathways to Bliss: Mythology and Personal Transformation, by Joseph Campbell David Kudler

From Publishers Weekly

This ninth volume of Campbell's previously unpublished material deftly marries his sweeping grasp of myths with the needs of contemporary people looking for meaning and inspiration. Expert editor and seasoned Campbell authority David Kudler makes the mythic-stature-mythicist come alive again. Fans will recognize Campbell's comforting cadence and intimacy, conveyed by use of the second person and by his masterful storytelling. Campbell realized he was essentially saying the same things over more than two decades. As such, this volume breaks no new ground, but does give explicit directions for identifying and connecting oneself to a meaningful mythic overview, unbounded by specific cultures or historical facts. Campbell gives adequate coverage to the historical development of myth as it pertains to the individual, especially through the eyes of Jung. The final chapter, a distilled jewel of the hero's journey mono-myth that Campbell made famous, is followed by "Dialogue," several pages of conversation between Campbell and anonymous people, exploring the application of gender differences to the hero's journey. Campbell assesses life now as pathless: "We are in a sort of free fall into the future." He is, however, perennially hopeful that if we discover our own mythological underpinnings, carried on the wings of artists and poets, we can find our way to individual bliss. This is a fine volume for old friends and new followers. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

â€œThere are something like 18 billion cells in the brain alone. There are no two brains alike; there are no two hands alike; there are no two human beings alike. You can take your instructions and your guidance from others, but you must find your own path.”“The basic story of the hero journey involves giving up where you are, going into the realm of adventure, coming to some kind of symbolically rendered realization, and then returning to the field of normal life.”“The scientist knows that at any moment facts may be found that make the present theory obsolete; this is happening now constantly. It’s amusing. In a religious tradition, the older the doctrine, the truer it is held to be.”~ Joseph Campbell from Pathways to BlissThis is the third review I’ve created on Joseph Campbell. As I mention in the others (A Joseph Campbell Companion and The Power of Myth), Campbell sits in the Granddaddy slot in my spiritual family tree. I heart Grandpa Joe. :)This book is from the collected works series New World Library and the Joseph Campbell Foundation are assembling. The prose and the presentation are stunningly beautiful. If you haven’t explored Campbell and his hero’s journey yet, get on it! I trust you’ll enjoy this gem, Pathways to Bliss. Here are some of the Big Ideas:1. Bliss = - Transcendent wisdom.2. Your Life - Composed by a novelist.3. Life Is Calling - Answer, please. :)4. Say “Yes!” - Pretty please.5. Bringing the Boon Back - Show me the boon!Let go of your fears that following your quest is an ego trip… And let’s become transparent to transcendence, my friend!(More goodness--including PhilosophersNotes on 250+ books at[...])

Never in my life has a book so inspired me. It has taken me months to get through this book because every page makes me stop and relate the passages to my own life. Do yourself a favor and get this book. The image I included is one of the many pages I've underlined. This book will be read and reread multiple times.

I've discovered Campbell's work not long ago, but it feels like I've found a life Master. I've read The Hero with a Thousand Faces and The Hero's Journey, but this was my favourite from Campbell, so far. Although in The Hero with a Thousand Faces all that is covered here is also delt with in depth, in this book Campbell relates myths and personal development in a most comprehensive and profound way. It fulfils the fourth function of myth perfectly: to carry the individual through the stages in his life and facilitate the hero's journey. Plus, the last part of the book, where some dialogues with a group of women are shown, and the heroine's journey is debated, really aided me to delve deep into my own woman's psyche and inner work, in addition to providing me with sound material for my Women Circles. It's a really inspirational work and I'm so grateful to have come across this amazing Teacher, that Campbell is.

Joseph Campbell is the most influential person in my life (of course I never met him) and this is his best book. This will help you understand some of the bigger questions of meaning, purpose and other perplexing things we humans face. And with all the hogwash out there telling us to put a smile on our face and that will solve our problems this is a wise way to try to understand life.

Classic Joseph Campbell at his best. Pathways to Bliss is a collection of lectures, interviews, and seminars that Campbell gave between 1962 and 1983. If you've read Joseph Campbell before, then this book may seem redundant at parts, but for those of us who could use a little reminding and repetition it's good to hear some of the same stories and points that Joseph Campbell is so well known for. Some of my favorite ideas I'll list below:A myth isn't a lie... a myth points past itself to something indescribable. A myth is a metaphor.Eternity is now. It is the transcendent dimension of the now to which myth refers.Follow your bliss: that deep sense of being present, of doing what you absolutely must do to be yourself. If you can hang on to that, you are on the edge of the transcendent already. Your bliss can guide you to that transcendent mystery, because bliss is the welling up of the energy of the transcendent wisdom within you.The only way to affirm life is to affirm it to the root, to the rotten, horrendous base. One can know God only when one knows that God far surpasses anything that can be said or thought about God.The real, important function of the Church is to present the symbol, to perform the rite, to let you behold this divine message in such a way that you are capable of experiencing it. Unfortunately, when you have a dogma telling you what kind of effect the symbol is supposed to have upon you, you're in trouble.Perfection is inhuman. Human beings are not perfect. What evokes our love --and I mean love, not lust-- is the imperfection of the human being. So, when the imperfection of the real person, compared to the ideal of your animus or anima, peeks through, say, This is a challenge to my compassion. It is a fashionable idiocy of youth to say the world has not come up to your expectations. "What? I was coming, and this is all they could prepare for me?" Throw it out. Have compassion for the world and those in it. Not only political life but all life stinks, and you must embrace that with compassion. The only way one can become a human being is through relationships to other human beings. Each of us has an individual myth that's driving us, which we may or may not know.Mythological images are the images by which the consciousness is put in touch with the unconscious. That's what they are. What is the great thing for which you would sacrifice your life? What makes you do what you do; what is the call of your life to you-- do you know it? The old traditions provided this mythic support for people; it held whole culture worlds together. Every great civilization has grown out of a mythic base.Maslow's five values are the values for which people live when they have nothing to live for. Nothing has seized them, nothing has caught them, nothing has driven them spiritually mad and made them worth talking to. These are the bores. - "A bore is one who deprives us of our solitude without providing companionship."That awakening of awe, that awakening of zeal, is the beginning, and, curiously enough, that's what pulls people together. People living for these five values (Maslow) are pushed apart. Two things pull people together; aspiration and terror. There is no aspiration that's been put in front of us to pull people together, nor any overwhelming fear to drive us together. Now, that's the big thing, to activate your imagination somehow. You can't do this by taking suggestions from somebody else. You must find that which your own unconscious wants to meditate on.The work of the artist is to present objects to you in such a way that they will shine. Through the rhythm of the artist's formation, the object that you have looked at with indifference will be radiant, and you will be fixed in esthetic arrest. What is it we are questing for? It is the fulfillment of that which is potential in each of us. Questing for it is not an ego trip; it is an adventure to bring into fulfillment your gift to the world, which is yourself. There's nothing you can do that's more important than being fulfilled. You become a sign, you become a signal, transparent to transcendence; in this way , you will find, live, and become a realization of your own personal myth. You see, in my youth, in the days of the Depression, people who were what might be called counterculture had been kicked out of the society entirely. There was no room for them. That's different from the ones who leave out of resentment or with the intention to improve it.What I think is that a good life is one hero journey after another. Over and over again, you are called to the realm of adventure, you are called to new horizons. Each time, there is the same problem: do I dare? There's always the possibility of a fiasco. But there's also the possibility of bliss.I think the world lives on crazy things. The economics will work themselves out later -- you can count on it. But it's the scope of the aspiration that really matters.Sometimes the drudgery itself can become part of the hero deed. The point is not to get stuck in the drudgery but to use it to free you.

Worth reading if you are looking for bliss and appreciate mythology. This writing is much more accessible than some of his other books. Also, the feminine is addressed more here than in "Hero with a Thousand Faces".
