I own and have thoroughly enjoyed all of James Lawrence's books. California is my home state and I've been up and down her coastline, in her valleys, and lived in the beautiful SF Bay Area. She has a lot to offer every person. You haven't lived if you have never stood on one of her beaches and been bathed with the golden glow of a sunset. It can give you the feeling that people talk about when they meditate.The photography is by the best photographers ever born. They are David Muench and his son, Mark. A few photographs are by Zandria Muench Beraldo. The photographs take you from the coastline on the west to the Sierra Mountains in the east and many places in between. Some of these places look so remote that you think maybe no one, but them, ever set foot there. If California was a beautiful woman, the photographs would show that she wears lush colors in her diversified landscapes.This is a hardback book with 144 colorful photographs on 144-pages. There are four areas covered: Mountains, Oak and Grass, the Coast, and Deserts. At the back, you will find a large, colorful map of this great state.Why should you have this book? The contents have many things to enjoy, besides the photographs. James Lawrence shares his knowledge on some of California's history to support his premise of how this state brings "promise and fruition" to many people. Then, he draws you into his story with details of a personal journey over California that he and a best friend, Marty Alameda, takes while flying in their hang-gliders and then their ultra-light planes. Want to see what an ultra-light plane looks like? Look at the picture on the back cover of the book showing James happily flying very high in his. His stories give us details about the dangers of flying in these vehicles and why caution is so important. You read about close calls and the humorous tales of the things that can happen when on a journey with a good friend. There's a peaceful moment with a daughter. James has a great gift for writing. You begin to read his book, but after a short time, his descriptions have you there with him and Marty and you see what they saw at that time. If you don't know California, you will when you finish and understand why she's a great state.

Beautiful! I gave this to my study abroad 'parents' and they loved it. So many gorgeous, clear, bright photos. I would buy prints of pretty much any of the photos in a heartbeat and now want to see more of CA. Moreover, it was a great way to show off my home state to people that don't speak English and haven't seen California.

I love California so I loved the book!

This is such a great book! It features plenty of beautiful photos and makes you feel like you're actually there. It gives of you an overview of the diverse biomes that California has to offer. There's desert, mountain, ocean, and rain forest. If you're a visual learner, like me, and want to learn all there is to know about California, I'd recommend this book.

This wonderful book was a gift and the recipient loved it as did I. Beautiful, stunning photography and it covered many miles of coastline. I recommend this for a gift or for your own reading pleasure.

The magic that David Muench (and his son) make with their cameras creates a lovely portrait of California. There's not much text, which I'm happy with, and except for a few more "touristy" images, I'm very happy with the book.

About the Author

Tim Deagan has written for Make: magazine, Nuts and Volts, and other technical publications. He is a licensed Texas Flame Effects Operator and the Flame and Safety Coordinator for the Austin Mini Maker Faire. After years of building flame effects, aka "booshes," in the local Burn community, Tim began teaching classes called "Propane 101" and "Build Your Own Aluminum Foundry" to help other interested makers create their own projects. As a former firefighter in the Brent Volunteer Fire Department and captain of a Red Cross Disaster Action Team, Tim has always believed that the most exciting pursuits are at their best when safety is fully understood and becomes part of the culture. A long, long time ago, I remember being given a set of leather punches or dies. They were intended to be used to stamp patterns into leather. I don’t recall ever having anything more than leather scraps to work on, but it was fun while the excitement lasted. I am still attracted to hand tooled leather goods. I admire the craftsmanship and artistry, recognizing that I lack the patience to pursue something like this. Tim Deagan’s somewhat odd tome on using CNC machines, 3D printers and other devices, like craft cutting machines has reawakened my old interest in the form of lust. Now I want a CNC machine and a 3D printer. (I already have the cutting machine.) Ultimately “Modern Leatherwork for Makers” has little practical value to me. Despite the addition of modern technology, this very well-illustrated book drives home once again that leatherworking is a hand-craft and now I not only lack the patience, but the manual dexterity. Deagan provides a thorough basic introduction to leatherworking. I found this to be informative and also convincing, in the sense of making it clear that leatherwork is something for me to admire, not to create. He then goes on to describe how CNC machines and 3D printers can be brought to the craft. These equally thorough basic introductions convinced me that I need a 3D printer soon – and, quite possibly, a CNC machine. Deagan provides seven projects illustrating concepts. One of them, a combination hatband for a Steampunk-style top hat and action cam, opened my eyes and my mind to something I have long wanted to try. Each of the projects is fascinating in its own right for me, as Deagan demonstrated how the machines can be used. Deagan’s writing style is excellent. He is thorough without becoming pedantic. His attention to detail is very impressive. Even though I will not pursue leatherworking as an advocation, I am indebted to Me. Deagan for an excellent introduction to the practical use of CNC machines and 3D printers.Jerry

Veteran practitioners of the ancient art and craft of leatherwork may recoil at the notion of introducing computer numeric control (CNC) machines, software and 3D printers into processes they have always done carefully by hand, with hand tools. The author of this book, Tim Deagan, however, is a bit of a modern Renaissance man when it comes to making things and trying new technology. His new book is a refreshing blend of (1) time-proven, basic techniques for cutting, grooving, gouging, beveling, edging and joining leather, (2) using hobby-level CNC machines to cut pieces and laser-drill holes, and (3) using 3D printers to impart decorative designs onto leather surfaces. It should be noted right away that these 3D-printed embellishments will not be nearly as durable as hand-tooled decorations that have been hammered into leather. But Deagan is not deterred in his mission. "Modern Leatherwork for Makers" likely will encourage tech-savvy makers (young, old or in between) to try their hands at leatherwork. "With a willingness to trade durability and strength for customization and availability," he writes, "leatherworkers can easily 3D print many items that expand their capabilities." The projects in his book are geared toward beginners, usefulness and fun. The leather items range from a video-game-inspired cell phone case to a fractal-pattern journal cover and a Steampunk action-cam top hat band. But hand work is always required with these projects, including stitching, dyeing, coloring, finishing and using products to hasten the softening of leather. Even if you don't want to work with CNC machines and 3D printers, you can learn some good, basic leatherworking skills from this book. "Modern Leatherwork for Makers" is written clearly, well organized and well illustrated. So which is better, "old-school leatherworking techniques" or "modern digital fabrication methods"? Tim Deagan admires the careful artistry of those who pursue the time-honored approaches. But he believes modern technology is bringing new capabilities and possibilities to leatherworking, as well. "I don't believe that either is better than the other; I believe they complement one another beautifully," he contends.My thanks to O'Reilly Media for providing an advance reading copy for review.

I figured that this would expect some background in the maker world of tools, so 2d+1 CNC machines and 3d additive printing, and then would try to introduce leatherworking and some ways to use the maker tools in leatherworking. But there was I think too much assumed, on both the maker side and the leather side. I could see some interesting projects in here, but a first read did not teach me much in the way of technique. Perhaps if I knew traditional leatherwork? Maybe that would have helped. With a different background, your mileage might vary (a lot).

This is an excellent how to. I love that it includes the most basic leather buying terminology. It covers basic leatherworking as well as using the 3d printer and CNC machines, with software, to take it up a notch. Several projects are discussed that are very in demand and modern, like steampunk, cell phone cases, shoulder bags, ect. Cutting and joining leather, basic tools, rivets, grommets, dyes, lubricants- it's pretty much all there for the basics. The book has resources too, from free software that you can use, to patterns to download, supply houses for leather and supplies, and websites of interest to makers.It's well illustrated, easy to understand, but do expect some work learning to use the software and machines. The book does facilitate that though.I'm not sure I'd gift this book to anyone, because of the skill level involved, but I think it's an excellent guide for a cosplayer, fashion designer, or leatherworker who wants to take their work to a professional level with modern projects.

About the Author

Siân Pritchard-Jones and Bob Gibbons met in 1983, on a trek from Kashmir to Ladakh. By then Bob had already driven an ancient Land Rover from England to Kathmandu (in 1974), and overland trucks across Asia, Africa and South America. He had also lived in Kathmandu for two years, employed as a trekking company manager. Before they met, Siân worked in computer programming and systems analysis, but was drawn to the Himalaya en route from working in New Zealand. Since then they have been leading and organising treks in the Alps, Nepal and the Sahara, as well as driving a bus overland to Nepal. Journeys by a less ancient (only 30-year-old) Land Rover from England to South Africa provided the basis for several editions of the Bradt guide Africa Overland, including the sixth edition published in May 2014. In Kathmandu they previously worked with Pilgrims Publishing, producing cultural guides - Kathmandu: Valley of the Green-Eyed Yellow Idol and Ladakh: Land of Magical Monasteries - and a historical look at the Guge Kingdom, Kailash: Land of the Tantric Mountain. In 2007 they wrote the Cicerone guide to Mount Kailash and Western Tibet, as well updating the Grand Canyon guide. During 2011 they returned to Tibet, this time driving the same old Land Rover back from Kathmandu to the UK overland via Lhasa, through China, Kazakhstan, Russia and Western Europe. Their Annapurna trekking guide was published by Cicerone in January 2013, with the second edition in February 2017. For Himalayan Map House they are writing a series of trekking guidebooks (Himalayan Travel Guides) covering the newly developing Great Himalaya Trail. So far their publications include a guide to Manaslu and the Tsum Valley (second edition); Upper and Lower Dolpo; Ganesh Himal (Tamang Heritage Trail); Everest; Langtang, Gosainkund & Helambu (Tamang Heritage Trail); Rolwaling & Gauri Shankar (Lapche, Bigu & Tashi Lapcha); Mustang; Kanchenjunga; Makalu; and Nepal Himalaya, covering all of the above and most of the Himalayan range. A faithful hound named Kanchi followed them to Makalu Base Camp and wrote her own book entitled Kanchi's Tale, also in colour, B&W and Kindle. They were in Nepal in May 2015 and have also published an account of what happened (and didn't happen) after the earthquakes in Earthquake Diaries: Nepal 2015. Also available are their autobiography In Search of the Green-Eyed Yellow Idol, a pictorial guide to the Horn of Africa, and a trekking guide Australia: Red Centre Treks.
