The Oxford History of Western Art

From Publishers Weekly

The dogmatic overviews of art that are the traditional texts for students in college-level survey classes and the occasional museum-goer are overthrown by this refreshing and accessible survey. Instead of foregone conclusions, renowned art historian Kemp and his 50 contributors (representing a diversity of backgrounds and specialties) offer an elasticized look at art and an understanding that poses as many questions as it answers. Instead of taking a purely visual approach (i.e., organized by style and medium along a linear chronology), Kemp focuses on social, religious and political history, occasionally showing art in situ and juxtaposing photos by subject matter, but without ignoring standard art historical pedagogy. The first section, for example, focuses on the classical art of ancient Greece and Rome, but includes a subsection on "Ancient Paradigms from Augustus to Mussolini." The final section, "Modernism and After," extends the book's western reach to include the art of the Soviet Union, Latin America and India, and discusses the roles of art museums and galleries and the evolving discipline of art history. "Ultimately, there is no reason to look at art," Kemp writes in the epilogue, "but many of us cannot stop doing it, and it clearly meets fundamental human needs visually, intellectually, and psychologically. This book is designed to assist in meeting those needs." And so it does. (Oct. 31) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

There have been numerous single-volume histories of Western art that squeeze 2,500 years of creativity into less than half that number of pages, using essentially the same chronological outline. Art historian Kemp and his 50 contributors have taken a more fluid and inclusive approach by establishing the context within which art is created and exhibited and eschewing conventional period designations for more socially oriented perspectives and thematic groupings. Specific media, such as prints, painting, stained glass, and altarpieces, are considered independently, and there is an in-depth discussion of the shift from the influence of the church to that of nations. Kemp and company do a tidy job of chronicling the rapid evolution in innovative form and image that took place between 1770 and 1914, the "era of revolutions"; and the section on the impact of the conquest of the Americas on both indigenous and European art is eye-opening. The modern era is intelligently sampled, with a strong photography section, but inevitably many facets are reduced to tantalizing glimpses, which, it is hoped, will instigate further study. Informative but to much covered so the pictures are small and underwhelming. Pick an era or subject with less breadth.

Excellent and informative book on Art from Greece and Rome 600BC to Modernism in the 20th century. Book in excellent condition and superb colour plates too! Will be extremely useful for my on-going University studies of the History of Art.

I have the highest regard for Kemp and a number of the contributors to this volume; this is especially due to the fact that I was once a student of his, and the source of much of my excitement derives itself directly from having listened to his wonderful lectures. This book, however, was a major disappointment in many respects.Espousing a new approach to art history which is image based, Kemp has provided us with a text that is filled with glorious reproductions. Alongside the old favourites are many new discoveries, and the inclusion of areas of design and the attention to the history of photography is not just welcome but a breath of fresh air. Yet, there is very little text accompanying the imagery, and a complete lack of architecture. Why? Kemp and his contributors don't offer an explanation. Where complicated art require an explanation for the uninitiated, the reader is left with little to rely on. This may be due to the fact that Oxford is currently publishing an excellent series of detailed texts on specific periods and ideas (though not all are that good... avoid the volume on Modernism at all costs), but I would think that Kemp's book should be self-sufficient. It isn't.Most of these large volumes are published with introductary art history classes in mind. As a professor, I look to have material which will enhance my teachings. Kemp fails to provide this. I loved looking through the book, but it would be impossible to teach from this, in that little information is provided for an audience who will be mostly ignorant of that which they're looking at.Truly, its a beautiful book to look at, and I recommend purchasing it on that basis alone, but don't buy it to read anything substantial. Oxford should think about a second edition quickly if they wish to bite into the market that Gardner, Janson, and Stockstad have established on campuses in this country.

It is often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To an extent that is true but it also has its limitations. The proper appreciation of art is not a matter of taste or impressions but an intellectual understanding of what a particular work is trying to do. That is as true of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel as it is Mark Rothko's Ochre on Red on Red. To understand a piece of art, one must understand the context that created it. That means both the society the artist lived in and the threads that connect art throughout history. A perfect book to explain that is The Oxford History of Western Art, edited by Martin Kemp.Kemp and the other contributors describe the age artists lived in, the motivations for their creations and the technical details involved in the creation of different kinds of art. There is the perfect combination of art theory and history and Kemp is careful not to impose modern prejudices and understandings (theory, techniques, world view) on the past. The particular strength of the book is the Renaissance and its weakness may be a longer than necessary examination of the last 200 years (although, unlike earlier ages, there are more areas to cover with the advent of different kinds of art such as photography and splintering of many styles). The Oxford History of Western Art is must reading for anyone nominally interested in art, but also religion, history and philosophy. We cannot understand art without understanding the context in which it was created. The flip-side, however, is also true. Our understanding of our world is enhanced when we see it through the eyes of our best artists.

Why should any art afficiando purchase yet another "History of Western Art" book? Answer: Because this one is thoughtful and user friendly. Yes, electing to present the entire history of Western Art is daunting and often borders on stuffy: Martin Kemp has wisely recodified the presentation to maintain the flow of chronolgy but to this flow he adds the refreshing idea of grouping paintings into similar examples of each period, the effect of which provides entertaining and eye-opening disclosures that have not been readily available prior to this volume. Example: In a section on the Era of Revolution 1770 - 1914 he groups paintings into categories such as 'Romantic Quandries' showing Goya's "Third of May, 1808" with Turner's "Snow Storm: Hannibal Crossing the Alps" and Gericault's "The Raft of Medusa" - combining a study not only of politial content but also of variations in landscape and figure painting. 'Disquieting Images' pairs Goya's "Fire" with Gericault's "Severed Limbs". At the end of this section of the book Kemp gifts us with photographic visions through the stereoptican and progresses through Julia Margaret Cameron's "Lancelot and Guinevere" to Alfred Stieglitz. He ends this beautifully and generously illustrated volume with a fine Chronology pairing artistic events with concurrent events in that time's contemporary world. The book is thorough enough to accompany any art student's passage through the academy, but more important this History is a quick reference, elegantly detailed, to refresh each of us when we encounter that newly uncovered masterpiece in the museums and magazines. Excellent.

This emotional 2nd chance love fest really struck gold you meet mayci & Dallas 6 years prior when Dallas takes off and leaves her pregnant without knowing but he comes home ready to pick back up things 6 years later but she has a little girl & her own life will this change things

I liked this second chance romance. The characters, Mayci and Dallas, were interesting, well-developed and have chemistry. The story is interesting, well-written, with a happily ever after. In addition to receiving an arc, I purchased the book for my collection.

Mayci and Dallas were about to graduate from college. She’s pregnant and about to tell him, when he abruptly and with no explanations leaves her, no looking back for six years. For the six years, she’s had to raise their daughter Raya all on her own with no help or support from Dallas and make a living and succeed as a very young mother.Dallas ghosted on her to go work for some mystery company. But he does this without talking to her about their future, you know, like adults.Six years later he’s back and Mayci immediately falls back into bed with him, no explanations. Not sure why she has to ask all the right questions and he never apologizes for leaving her.Why did I like it? They were both virgins and they didn’t hook up with other people. Even though Dallas has so much to make up for. Seriously.I voluntarily reviewed this book.

This is a well written book of a love lost with no explanation and the consequences they will need to live with. Fast forward six years and he's back. Can they rekindle what they had with all the past hurt and secrets between them? The author does a great job bringing out all the emotions and describing her characters and scenes in vivid detail and in bringing the story to life. It's an entertaining story filled with tons of steam , moves quickly and smoothly and I enjoyed reading.I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

Mayci and Dallas have been together for a while and everything was roses until Dallas has to leave. No explanation or anything and leaving Mayci with a secret of her own.Fast forward 6 years and fate pushes them together two times in one day. These two haven't forgotten each other and that passion that's built even stronger after years apart.Secrets will be exposed. How will Dallas handle his secret let alone the one the love of his life has?Katy has such a way of bringing these hurt, vulnerable and real characters to life. It commands your heart and attention. Not to mention, Katy doesn't write wham bam sex scenes...these are descriptive and definitely hot!!!I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Mayci and Dallas were in love in college but right after college he up and left her with no explanation. She had something to tell him but he just left. Now she lives in her hometown and raising her daughter Raya alone. Now after six years has past since graduation Dallas is back and wants to get her back. He left after graduation knowing it was a sacrifice but hopefully to make them a future together but will she listen. He finds out she has a daughter but he’s wanting to have a future with them both. But what will he do when he finds out Raya is his daughter?I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A great second chance story. From the beginning of the book, I could tell that Dallas and Maycee were meant for each other. Dallas made a choice to leave, thinking he was doing what he had to do for a future with Maycee, but broke her heart instead. When they meet again several years later, they are eventually able to move past Maycee's anger and start to build a relationship again, but with Maycee keeping a big secret that threatens to end them again. This book brings you through their ups and downs and keeps you rooting for them to make it through. Overall a great read.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This well written second chance romance would have been a bit more enjoyable if Dallas hadn’t made such a bone headed decision to abandon Mayci without explanation six years prior. She didn’t even have a chance to tell him she was pregnant and desperately needed him. Almost instantly, he is gone and ghosted her to add insult to injury. Now six years later, claiming he’d suffered for six years to set up a good life for them, always knowing he would come back for her, well, who does that?!Luckily for Dallas, Mayci never got over him in spite of the horrible way he left. Kudos to her for keeping little Raya and raising her alone as a single parent.Of course there’s a bit of drama when the other shoe drops and Dallas realized that Raya was his. Now who do you suppose apologized first?I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

This review will assess the effectiveness and quality of Rita Carter's "The Human Brain Book" in describing the anatomy and function of the human brain. The book is a very illustrated introduction to the world of neuroscience. The book also included a DVD disk, but that component will not be included in this review.Overall, the book does an excellent job of presenting detailed information in an easy to understand and digest way. The illustrations are wonderful tools in understanding the complex material, though the text does not get into the level of detail that it could. One must keep in mind that this is a cursory look at the whole system, how it works, what it does, what happens when things go wrong or don't function correctly, etc. To truly understand the mechanisms of the brain and all the interactions that occur, the reader would need to look for a textbook or research on the topic. I gave the book a rating of four stars because it easily and effectively accomplishes its goal of introducing users to the material, but it does pass over some important information and makes a few statements that are questionable considering current research. The book is broken up into chapters that start with general information about the brain and body, moves to anatomy of the brain, then discusses the senses and how the brain interacts with the environment. Next, it covers the more abstract topics such as memory, thinking, and consciousness. The final couple of chapters involve development and diseases of the brain. This progression makes sense from the reader's perspective because it first teaches the general information that is necessary for understanding the later material. For instance, one should know basic neuroanatomy to really grasp the effects of diseases and disorders of the brain. The strengths:"The Human Brain Book" contains hundreds of spectacular illustrations that really do help convey the information in a more concise and understandable way. For readers who learn more from visual sources, this is a perfect resource for getting basic familiarity with the human brain. Some of the illustrations used could even be referred to in order to understand more complicated material than what is presented. The organization of the book is also a key strength. I never felt as though I was getting lost, because all prerequisite information to understand a topic had already been presented by the time I got to it. The seamless flow and logical progression make this book a quick, easy, and informative read (though the large pictures certainly don't hurt). The book also presents many interesting bits of trivia that, while not crucial to the topic, is an interesting aside. For example, in the "Intelligence" chapter, the book associates intelligence with the brain's ability to process and information accurately and efficiently. Later on the page, a box addresses the topic of "Why We Can't Do Two Things At Once", which states that the brain can only process one source of information at a time and must switch between tasks, thus creating a "processing gap". This is just one of the many examples of how the book integrates interesting bits of information and trivia that might answer those questions that people have always wondered about. The weaknesses:This book is not a good resource if you are looking for a lot of information, or detailed information on any one topic in neuroscience. It is perfect for beginners and those looking to get a very general understanding of how things work, but it is certainly not meant for anything beyond that, due to several errors in the diagrams as well as the surface level of detail it achieves. I don't see this book being on the shelf of a neurologist's bookcase. If you need specific information, your best bet would be to bypass this book and go straight for a textbook. I say that because, while this book accomplishes its purpose very well, that is a very limited purpose and should not be used beyond that introductory level. It seems as if the book attempts to analyze the findings of the most recent research and present those results and limited conclusions as they fit into our current understanding of the mechanisms of the brain. Way too much emphasis is put on some of these findings as they are experimental and may not stand. The field of neuroscience is always changing and it is not uncommon at all for the results of one study or experiment to be completely contrary to those of another. In reading this book, one must really keep that in mind because some of these theories and ideas are presented as facts. It is an issue mostly in the central chapters exploring concepts such as consciousness, sleep, perception, etc. Because of these claims, we may find that several pieces of information in the book are obsolete in a few years time. Especially at an introductory level, I would caution the reader to take such statements into consideration, but don't view everything as undeniable fact. The final issue with the book is that it seems to turn away from the methodical and scientific way it presents information in earlier sections and becomes more speculative and more of a commentary towards the more abstract sections. There is a lot of time spent speculating and explaining how the brain may be a factor in current social issues. For example, the section on handedness presents only statistics and hypotheses around the origins of the preferences of right or left hand. Because no hard evidence is presented and because this section really doesn't make any points that haven't been made elsewhere, I feel that it could be taken out. This is just one example of several that give the book the feeling of being longer than necessary and containing information that isn't terribly relevant. So in conclusion, "The Human Brain Book" did a wonderful job of presenting a lot of complicated information in an easy to follow and easy to remember way. Though there were a few issues, they were minute compared with the benefit that could be derived from giving this book a read. I would strongly encourage anybody seeking to learn about the brain, what it is, how it works, what it does, etc. to give this book a try.

I owe at least 10 books especially concerning the human brains, of the around 250 medicine and health books which I owe, but should I only be allowed to have one book about the brain then it without doubt would be this one. In any case it’s a very delightful book to use, with the many good pictures and drawings. And especially for me it’s helpful to use when I sometimes a having questions from my wife to explain, or to visitors, into which the brain is connect. And personally to me, it especially can be helpful to use as a parallel book, when I in other book without pictures or drawing, are reading about the brain, then like an atlas when I’m reading about the Earth.Of course the book don’t tell all what we knows about the brain, when we go to the highest science news concerning the brain, and besides many research persons believe that we will never will be knowing all about the brain. But again, a very delightful book to use both by reading by the pictures or reading by the text

This book is an inspiration. I can flip it open to any page and learn something new. I am a writer of sci-fi, and wanted to incorporate brain imaging technology in my fiction, so I checked this out from my local library. I had it out for so long, I decided I really needed to own a copy so I could reference it at any time. The book itself is so chock-full of information, I have not yet investigated the CD. If there had been fMRI technology and a book like this when I was young, I definitely would have pursued a career in the neurological sciences. It is utterly fascinating. Highly recommend for any curious layman.

I have been studying the brain for many years and this is by far the best book on the subject. Not only does it cover every aspect of the brain's structures, disorders, function, & development, it is very easy to read. It is not dense and is a great resource for a novice on the subject. It is clear and concise with wonderful, large pictures, computer models, and actual MRI images to illustrate brain anatomy and function. Amazon.com Review

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Collector's Edition Offered Exclusively by Amazon (Available in Limited Quantities) In December 2007, J.K. Rowling unveiled The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a very special book of five fairy tales illustrated by the bard herself, embellished with silver ornaments and mounted moonstones. Amazon was fortunate to come into possession of one of the original copies, and it was our privilege to share images and reviews of this incredible artifact. Now J.K. Rowling is giving millions of Harry Potter fans worldwide cause for celebration with a new edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard (available December 4, 2008) and Amazon is thrilled to exclusively offer a luxuriously packaged Collector's Edition designed to evoke the spirit of the handcrafted original. Tucked in its own case disguised as a wizarding textbook found in the Hogwarts library, the Collector's Edition includes an exclusive reproduction of J.K. Rowling's handwritten introduction, as well as 10 additional illustrations not found in the Standard Edition or the original. Opening the case reveals a velvet bag embroidered with J.K. Rowling’s signature, in which sits the piece de resistance: your very own copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, complete with metal skull, corners, and clasp; replica gemstones; and emerald ribbon. As a special gift for fans, the Collector's edition also includes a set of 10 ready-for-framing prints of J.K. Rowling's illustrations, enclosed in a velvet-lined pocket in the lid of the outer case. Offering the trademark wit and imagination familiar to Rowling's legions of readers--as well as Aesop's wisdom and the occasional darkness of the Brothers Grimm--each of these five tales reveals a lesson befitting children and parents alike: the strength gained with a trusted friendship, the redemptive power of love, and the true magic that exists in the hearts of all of us. Rowling's new introduction also comments on the personal lessons she has taken from the Tales, noting that the characters in Beedle's collection "take their fates into their own hands, rather than taking a prolonged nap or waiting for someone to return a lost shoe," and "that magic causes as much trouble as it cures." But the true jewel of this new edition is the enlightening and comprehensive commentary (including extensive footnotes!) by Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, who brings his unique wizard's-eye perspective to the collection. Discovered "among the many papers which Dumbledore left in his will to the Hogwarts Archives," the venerable wizard's ruminations on the Tales allow today's readers to place them in the context of 16th century Muggle society, even allowing that "Beedle was somewhat out of step with his times in preaching a message of brotherly love for Muggles" during the era of witch hunts that would eventually drive the wizarding community into self-imposed exile. In fact, versions of the same stories told in wizarding households would shock many for their uncharitable treatment of their Muggle characters. Professor Dumbledore also includes fascinating historical backstory, including tidbits such as the history and pursuit of magic wands, a brief comment on the Dark Arts and its practitioners, and the struggles with censorship that eventually led "a certain Beatrix Bloxam" to cleanse the Tales of "much of the darker themes that she found distasteful," forever altering the meaning of the stories for their Muggle audience. Dumbledore also allows us a glimpse of his personal relationship to the Tales, remarking that it was through "Babbity Rabbity and Her Cackling Stump" that "many of us [wizards] first discovered that magic could not bring back the dead." Both a wise and delightful addition to the Harry Potter canon, this new translation of The Tales of Beedle the Bard is all that fans could hope for and more--and an essential volume for the libraries of Muggles, wizards, and witches, both young and old. The Children's Voice Campaign The Tales of Beedle the Bard is published by The Children’s High Level Group (CHLG), registered charity number 1112575, a charity co-founded in 2005 by J.K. Rowling and Emma Nicholson MEP to make life better for vulnerable children. All net proceeds from the sale will be donated to The Children's Voice campaign. The Children's Voice campaign is run by CHLG. It campaigns for child rights across Europe, particularly in Eastern Europe where over a million children and teenagers are growing up in institutions, often in unacceptable conditions. In most cases they are without adequate human or emotional contact and stimulation, while many only just survive without life's basics such as adequate shelter and food. CHLG's Children's Voice campaign helps around a quarter of a million children each year through education activities; outreach work in institutions; and a dedicated telephone and email help line. Also Available: the Standard Edition The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Standard Edition contains the five fairy tales, a new introduction by J.K. Rowling, illustrations reproduced from the original handcrafted book, and commentary on each of the tales from Professor Albus Dumbledore. Please note that the review and images below pertain to the handmade book purchased at auction: There is no easy way to define the experience of seeing, holding, or reading J.K. Rowling's The Tales of Beedle the Bard, so let's just start with one word: "Whoa." The very fact of its existence (an artifact pulled straight out of a novel) is magical, not to mention the facts that only seven copies exist in all the world and each of the never-before-told tales is handwritten and illustrated by J.K. Rowling herself (and it's quite clear from the first few pages that she has some skill as an artist). Rowling's handwriting is like the familiar scrawl of a favorite aunt--it's not hard to read, but it does require attention--allowing you to take it slow and savor the mystery of each next word. So how do you review one of the most remarkable tomes you've ever had the pleasure of opening? You just turn each page and allow yourself to be swept away by each story. You soak up the simple tales that read like Aesop's fables and echo the themes of the series; you follow every dip and curve of Rowling's handwriting and revel in every detail that makes the book unique--a slight darkening of a letter here, a place where the writing nearly runs off the page there. You take all that and you try and bring it to life, knowing that you will never be able to do it justice. With that, let's dig in and begin at the beginning, shall we? --Daphne Durham Caution: the full reviews contain spoilers! Rowling "I am an extraordinarily lucky person, doing what I love best in the world. I’m sure that I will always be a writer. It was wonderful enough just to be published. The greatest reward is the enthusiasm of the readers." --J.K. Rowling Find out more about Harry's creator in our exclusive interview with J.K. Rowling. Rediscover the Complete Harry Potter Series Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Hardcover Paperback Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Hardcover Paperback Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Hardcover Paperback Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Hardcover Paperback Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Hardcover Paperback Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Hardcover Paperback Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Hardcover Deluxe Hardcover Why We Love Harry: Our Favorite Moments from the Series There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone * Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him. * When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists. * Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards. * Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets * The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius. * Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother. * The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban * Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'. * Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book. * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children. * The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom. * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire * Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them. * Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it. * Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge. * Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix * Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming. * Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone. * Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager. * Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape. * Dumbledore's confession to Harry. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince * The introduction of the Horcrux. * Molly Weasley asking Arthur Weasley about his "dearest ambition. "Rowling has always been great at revealing little intriguing bits about her characters at a time, and Arthur’s answer "to find out how airplanes stay up" reminds us about his obsession with Muggles. * Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, and more time spent with the fascinating and dangerous pensieve, arguably one of Rowling’s most ingenious inventions. * Fred and George Weasley’s Joke Shop, and the slogan: "Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You Should Be Worrying About U-NO-POO--the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!" * Luna's Quidditch commentary. Rowling created scores of Luna Lovegood fans with hilarious and bizarre commentary from the most unlikely Quidditch commentator. * The effects of Felix Felicis. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows * The revelation of Snape's nature (especially Snape’s Patronus and the emotion behind it). It serves as a reminder that it is love (requited or not) in all its forms that drives many of our actions. * Harry asking if the conversation with Dumbledore was real or happening in his head, and Dumbledore responding "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?" * Ron gifting Harry a book on dating witches, a subtle reminder that they are still teens, after all. I really love this book, but the advertising is miss leading. You only get the small book and velvet bag. While this is a fantastic deal. I just wanted to set the record straight. This listing is awesome and it is a deal. Love this book. Hats off to seller for the offer. Thank you so much.

I love Harry Potter and love this book. The only thing I would have changed and would have liked is the option to buy the book to look like it did in the movie because it would mean so much more to us potterheads! So that was very disappointing because when I ordered it the picture showed it to be like the one from the movie and that’s not what I got so for that I am so disappointed in it! I am still happy though to have the stories though.

My 11 year old son couldn't wait to get his hand on this book. The moment I handed it to him he started reading it. If you have Harry Potter fans in the house either by movies or books this is a great addition. My son hasn't even finished reading the first Harry Potter book, but has gotten half way through this in the first night. Great addition to our collection.

I was hesitant about buying or even reading another "Harry potter book" because of the mixed reviews friends and other sources had. But after reading this one J.K Rowling has resparked my interest to read AGAIN! Her play on words and the way she makes a "simple" childs book appeal to adults( I've been reading Harry potter since 7th grade and I'm 30 now) continues to amaze ME! I'll have to reread like the others to continue to get a clearer understanding just like all of the others I've read over twice a piece. I'm also elated that the money goes to a charity much like Harry's situation. Please buy and read! 👍👍💖💖

This thing is SOOOO cool! Its really authentic looking and fun addition to any Potterhead's collection. It includes a beautiful outer "box" that is a mock leather bound edition, and inside a book of The Tale of Beedle the Bard which is encased in a velvet back for protection. The illustrated prints are incredible. A great purchase!

There is a certain sort of magic that ties all the fairy tales together in style and presentation... I cannot say exactly what it is, but JKR does an Excellent job of conjuring it in these stories... To take on such a task from scratch, and to accomplish the subtleties of mood and tone necessary to pull it off is just another instance of her Exceedingly Excellent writing skill... While they are interesting in relation to the Harry Potter books, they stand well on their own and could just as easily be placed on a shelf next to the original fairy tale classics, presented on their own... new, and timeless folk tales in an ancient tradition!

I really enjoyed this book. I think my favorite tale is The Fountain of Good Fortune (I think that is what it is called--something like that). If you are planning to give this to a child, you may want to consider the age and sensitivity of the child. These tales are very much like the original Grimm fairy tales. They can be very dark and violent. They have excellent morals, but I have to admit that even I was shocked by the Tale of the Hairy Heart.

Ok so I've been waiting for this book for a long time now. Since the book was announced to have a limited number of copies available I made sure that I got my order in early. Like, August early. And the fact that it is still in stock you can only imagine how pleased I am with that decision I made, and not to mention the "limited quantity" of the edition... But this is not the place to talk about that. The whole time waiting I was filled with doubts about it. Not the stories themselves, but the Collectors Edition itself, and the fact the I paid $100 for it..Let me say that again...$100... for a book. In these tough times we live in where people are losing jobs and houses..I paid $100 for a book.So for 4 months while I was wondering what the hell was I thinking, all I could do was hope that the book delivered it's hype, both with it's stories and the quality of the edition itself. And to be honest, I couldn't be happier with the outcome of both. When the day it was being delivered came I was beyond excited. I was watching for that UPS truck like I haven't eaten in weeks and the driver was bringing me a giant Twinkie. When the package was finally delivered after what felt like the longest day in the history of the world I felt like a little school girl (which I'm not) when I read the printing on box. I'm not going into details about the box because I'm sure that people who don't even like Harry Potter know what the thing says. Anyways, I opened the box so quickly yet so carefully I felt like I was about to implode. When I finally got to the goods after paper, cardboard, plastic, and more cardboard, I was taken back by how nicely done the entire thing was put together. It's something that when held you just feel like it's an object taken right from the books (the Harry Potter series.) I feel that for fans it's a no brainer to have this edition of the book. And to tell you the truth, the Collectors Edition is the only way to read it because of the feel of it and the place that it puts you in when you have it in your hands. To make it understandable let me say that if you pass it up and just get the regular version it'll be like going into an ice cream parlor and ordering a hot fudge sundae with whipped cream, nuts and a cherry and the guy gives you a scoop of chocolate yogurt. You know something is not right and something's missing but you eat it anyway because you figure, "hey, I like chocolate."And if you're reading this and that's your attitude then go ahead and go crazy with your chocolate yogurt. Just know that you're reading this because something inside you really does want this Collectors Edition. And if you go ahead and get the regular edition and feel that something missing, I'll be too busy reading these amazing stories to hear you kicking yourself in the ....Oh yeah, the stories! This is already a long enough review so let me get to the point. The stories in this book are something else. Sure, if you really think about it you'd swear you've heard them before, but that's the beauty of it, you haven't. It's 5 unique stories that really do feel like they've been read to young witches and wizards for years. Stories that carry the same morals and lessons that we've learned from our own tales of old. There's even one story in here that made me read it twice because I couldn't believe how dark and twisted it was. While I was reading this book I honestly saw myself reading it to my future children as bedtime stories (besides that twisted one.) The entire book can be read in a day or less but how many times have you read or stood to listen tales like Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, Rapunzel, Cinderella? And it's because of that fact that I cannot stress my argument enough. Would you read these wizard tales to your kids from a nice little book that looks like it came from somewhere and means something, or a regular ol' looking hardback? The choice is yours. I made mine.. and it tastes like hot fudge.
