Having seen Cabaret, I was certainly aware of Christopher Isherwood. After reading a biography of Joel Grey, my interest was further piqued and I decided to buy Isherwood's "The Berlin Stories," upon which "I Am a Camera" and "Cabaret" were based. Isherwood is a wonderful writer and stylist. The second paragraph in his novel, "A Berlin Diary" (the second novel in this book) is one of the most finely crafted paragraphs I've ever read: "I am a camera with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking. Recording the man shaving at the window opposite and the woman in the kimono washing her hair. Some day, all this will have to be developed, carefully printed, fixed."The characters are wonderfully developed. Isherwood does a masterful job of describing their everyday lives against a background in which the Nazi presence is at first only fleetingly acknowledged and then steadily becomes a larger and more menacing presence as the stories progress. His ability to focus on everyday life while merely implying the terror that is about to engulf their society gives that threat of terror even greater impact. This book is a masterpiece of style and great story-telling.

It's a good book but quirky, and a little disjointed in places. Two different works joined together but not perfectly blended. We read it in our LGBT book group and some really liked it, while others didn't get or got but didn't get into the subtle nuances of the book, that which is not said but which is essential to fully appreciate this collection of "stories." The protagonist is basically an observer, and the reader has to really go under the surface to infer things about him Bradshaw (in the first half)/Isherwood (in the second). There are clues, so the reader must look closely. But I liked all the vignettes of wide variety of individuals living back then in free-wheeling Berlin on the eve of the Nazi rise to power. Many characters are in moral decline living in a society in moral decline, sensing that something horrible is coming but not quite knowing what or being able to fully admit it. Everyone seems to be hiding behind a mask, usually in an effort to deny reality or to make money. Norris is the prime example. His mask is so extensive that he doesn't seem to have any integrity at all. He uses everyone for his own advantage and isn't above putting people in extreme danger if he can make a profit, even if it means setting up his only real friend Bradshaw. If his true nature were revealed, he wouldn't be that different from Schmidt. In the second half of the book, the character who uses others the most is none other than Sally Bowles. Despite their complete lack of ethics, however, I also liked both characters. They seemed like their lives were somehow shipwrecked and that they were trying to make the best of it. And they're fun to be with -- never a dull moment! Decadence has its own charm, but ultimately it self destructs. And in the end, the character of Isherwood (not to be confused with the writer himself) takes off his mask and reveals himself rather than simply passively observing.

I'm acting in a production of "Cabaret" and decided to read the book on which it is loosely based, just for a little background. I wasn't at all familiar with Christopher Isherwood, so I had no idea what to expect.I'm a bit of a pre-WWII German history nerd so I knew a fair amount about the politics of the period, but knew nothing about the cabaret culture and the people who inhabited that world. I was immediately drawn in, and didn't want to put the book down when it ended. The characters are well-drawn, and even the not-so-likeable were portrayed as multifaceted, complex human beings -- real people -- living in an amoral, hedonistic culture where pretty much everything was permissible. Most chose not to see what was going on outside their own little part of Berlin, and were indifferent to it if they did see. And why not? They moved in a time and place that were somehow outside reality. Few of them were rich, but many were capable of living as if they were, simply by telling a few lies and acting the part. One could get money, one way or another. Pleasure was the goal, and if one stayed in the right circle, life was a party. There was, as there always is, another side of the story. In this case, it was the poor who lived outside the charmed circle, scraping by any way they could. Their existence was day-to-day, with hunger, disease, miserable living conditions and winter cold or oppressive summer heat as their constant companions. Isherwood drew these characters, too, as complex humans, motivated not by the pursuit of pleasure but by the desire to survive. After reading "The Berlin Stories" I spent quite a bit of time online, finding out more not only about the cabaret culture, but about Berlin in they months preceding the Nazi takeover of the German government. What a time it was. And to think I discovered it because I'm in a play and simply wanted to find some stuff to help me develop my character.

Christopher Isherwood is at the very top of the writing profession. His vocabulary, sentence structure, and turn of a phrase are second to none.Mr. Norris Changes Trains is a story set in the transition period of the Weimar Republic to Nazism. Isherwood imparts this regime change as almost banal and blasé with regard to the everyday lives of some of the inhabitants of Germany in general and Berlin in particular. There is a plot, simple, but intriguing none the less. The characters seem life like and real. The action certainly seems to be authentic. This is a great story and Goodbye to Berlin I remember as being just as good. Can't recommend highly enough.

#2,506,907 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book teaches OpenGL version 1.1. The current OpenGL version is 4.5, so I'm not sure what the point of learning a completely deprecated API is.

Outdated a bit, but it works.

I got this book after reading Packt's other great books on shaders and OpenGL. I expected this to be great as well, it is not.The entire book focuses on the VERY outdated OpenGL 1.1 API. And even at that it does a poor job. The amount of information covered in this book is so low i can't even rant about it. The book does not even mention vertex arrays, forget about anything with buffer in the name. How did this manage to find a publisher and get published? If you want to get a good book about legacy OpenGL, go with OpenGL Game Programming, First edition/

Absolutely terrible. Very shallow introduction to OpenGL, with nothing about shaders or modern pipeline, no scene graph, no proper model loading, nothing about lighting a scene... this book is just useless. You can find much better information online, on great websites like (...) and (...)

Full disclosure...I am the author of this book. I recognize the criticisms that the book is written to OpenGL 1.1. Keep in mind three things: (1) This book is intended as a primer. The reason for using OpenGL 1.1 is because that is the version that comes universally on all Windows PCs and therefore it is widely available and already pre-installed. (2) There is nothing taught in the book that is invalidated by newer versions of OpenGL, and (3) The book is much more that a book about OpenGL...it is a book about game development using OpenGL. In that regard, it covers other features of game development including good game design, audio, and UI. The reader creates 2 prototype games--one in 2D and one in 3D.I'll admit this is not an advanced OpenGL book...there are other books that fulfill that purpose. However, this book does exactly what the description says it does. It provides a beginner a good understanding of developing 2D and 3D games. Thanks for all of your comments.

I never cry when reading a book. Well, hardly ever! I won't admit that I cried, but there were many times I had to sniffle and dab at some moisture the just wouldn't stay out of my eyes!! I loved the character of Riordan. He is just so real. From heartbreak to dealing with daily life, I enjoyed his journey toward his future. Faulkner was a character that I adored when we first meet him in the Cold Case series. I loved how he had a chance to really show his heart and not just be a huge flirt like we knew before. Great story that tugs at the heartstrings.

During a dance recital Faulkner Hayes starts to fall for the beautiful man who runs on the stage to dance with his daughter who has developed a case of stage fright. As Faulk makes his moves strange things start to happen. Riordan is so confused. Will Tennyson be able to help? Will Faulk be alone again? What will happen now?Another great book by Pandora Pine! I love this series!

3.5*Tiny Dancer is a sweet book that will pull at your heartstrings, starting with the prologue and going right through until the last page. After his husband Stephen's death, Riordan is doing the best he can for his 2 young daughters. A chance meeting at their oldest daughter's dance recital turns out to be just what he, and his girls, need to begin living again. Although a bit leery at first, Riordan comes to realize Faulkner was a perfect fit for their little family. There were some funny, light-hearted moments in the book, to keep it from being too hard on the heart. I liked the touch of paranormal, it added a special touch to the story, especially with the kids. There was a definitely a case of insta-lust/insta-love with Riordan and Faulkner, after Riordan's initial reluctance, but for a novella like this it worked. While this is marketed as a spin-off, and can technically be read on its own, (I haven't read any of the Cold Case series), I feel like it would have been better appreciated if I had at least read the book/s where Faulkner was introduced, especially as a little of his back story is mentioned. But the fact that I didn't has no affect on my rating of this overall story. I just wanted to put it out there, in case anyone else was thinking of reading this without having read the other series.

Despite being a novella, this felt like a fully fleshed out relationship based on something solid and not just a supernatural enhancement of insta-love. When Riordan jumps on stage to dance with his daughters because of stage fright I was just as charmed as everyone else. His innate strength of character allowed him to push on despite his grief and his lack of pride let him accept help where it was available. I loved his humility. And for a loving, supportive partner, there was no man better than Faulkner. While I had reservations about him before this point, he more than redeemed himself with his stellar care and concern for Riordan as well as his adoration of all the children. His heart was so obvious in this story that I couldn't help but fall head over heels for him.The only thing I had an issue with was the four year old speaking like she was seven or eight. I enjoyed her role and pure childlike acceptance of the supernatural, but it was the age and verbalization capabilities that took me out of the story quite a few times. I also wish I got a lot more of Faulkner's background, but I liked what we did get. Overall though, this was a fantastically sweet story that fit in with the parent series and introduced me to new characters to love.

Tiny Dancer is the seventh book in the Cold Case Psychic Spin off series by Pandora Pine. I greatly enjoyed reading this novella, and each novella is about a different couple that has been introduced in the Cold Case Psychic series. In Tiny Dancer we get the story of how Riordan Quinn and Faulkner Hayes meet and fall in love. Faulkner has been introduced fairly recently as a person who works at the BPD and now works in the Cold Case division. I am so happy that he got his own story, and we finally found out more about the ballet slippers mystery. Tiny Dancer is a fun, sweet, adorable love story. I also fell in love with Isla and Macy. I basically read this whole story in one sitting because it was so entertaining. I really like how Pandora Pine gives the readers more information about the secondary characters that way we can get to know them better and also learn more about the universe she is creating.I highly recommend this book, but I would have to suggest reading the other books in this series first before you read this one to get the full experience of this series. I cannot wait for the next book to come out!I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Oh wow, this one had my emotions all over the place! Tiny Dancer is a beautiful story about family, love, loss, and moving on. Have tissues for this one, guys, it might hurt a bit. But don't worry, there is also plenty of laughter and fun and sweet moments that made my heart feel too big for my chest at times. Isla and Macy are the most adorable little girls (and Isla is a spitfire, too), and I completely fell in love with them. Riordan and Faulkner click from the start and are adorable together. I enjoyed the progression of their relationship and the family outings they went on with the girls so much! And Faulkner? He is pretty much exactly what I look for in a man, so he has joined the ranks of my loves Ronan and Jude in my eyes. And believe me, that is no small feat. This endearing novella is well-rounded, complete, and will tug on your heartstrings. With an adorable story and captivating characters, Tiny Dancer is a wonderful addition to this Pandoraverse. I love how Faulk and Riordan have been pulled into Ronan and Ten's world, and I really hope to see a lot more of them in the future!!
