The main character isn't a superhero, isn't some survival God. The end just happens without comment or reason, like it could very well happen in real life. The characters are flawed just like everyone is. Makes it more authentic feeling. There is no liberal/conservative slant like many in this genre seem to follow. Looking forward to book 2
My preference in apocalyptic books combines a good story, likable characters, and realistic survival tips. This book provides all three. I like characters based on military service, believing they provide a maturity and insight like no other, and this book uses that generously.
One smooth flowing book didn't even realize it was the end until it was the end. The characters are real not made-up super heroes but people you could run into any where. I wish this series had like ten books already written because now I'm going to stuck. Buy and read in two days wait however long for the next one, lol. Great job
A lot of books tend to spend an incredible amount of time building characters and laying tons of background, but Mr. Hunt has found a nice balance that keeps a page-turning interest while giving plenty of history. I’m an action junkie and love page-burners. This book kept me happy, and I’m looking forward to the next!
Very good book. Read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. I've read about ten of these kinds of end of the world books and this one is probably in the top three. Lots of action and not too deep into character build up which is good to me because I read these kind of books for recreation and not for political or moral judgements. Look forward to the second book in this series to see how they progress. Hopefully I'll make the book last longer than a day because I don't want to stay up until 2 am like I did on this one. This was a good lightweight book and easy reading.
I've been reading a lot of these books lately, so maybe I'm just getting a little nit picky. There weren't many grammatical errors in this one but there wasn't much technical info either. In a way, that was refreshing as it gets old reading book after book with a hero who is a super soldier decked out with all kinds of toys. On the other hand, sometimes blatant ignorance rears it's ugly head. Elliot stated it would take 4 days to walk 280 miles or 28 hrs to bicycle it. Let me know the last time someone walked 70 miles a day for 4 straight days. I'd say that's at least a 10 day trip with lots of luck walking. As for biking, that's averaging 10 miles an hour straight through. Good luck with that too. Other than that, it was an interesting read and I will be getting the second book.
I've read a number of books about EMP type situations. This one was mildly entertaining at best. The author seemed to forget that the setting for his story was winter time in New York state. The action scenes were good,the writing was good. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get over that there wasn't any snow and the temperature just want an issue other than in passing.
...but so many characters it just really laid the foundation for other books. It didn't really get into character development, and left me kind of like, oh, it's over?
