I enjoy this different approach to crafting a character. A hero is only as good as its villain, and monsters make for very fun villains! A good break of fresh air in an ocean of writing advice books.

Writing Monsters provided some insights into writing the things that go bump in the night or that crawl into your spaceship and start taking down your crew one by one, but in some ways it was a victim of its own wide-spectrum approach. In attempting to cover all scenarios that might involve monsters it wound up being more of a standardized book on how to write speculative fiction than the specialized work I was looking for. It's not a bad book at all, but it didn't delve into the topic deep enough for me to give it more stars.

Enjoyed this immensely. Great insights into the subject of monsters in fiction, their roles, suggestions on monster design, how to handle strengths vs. weaknesses, etc. I dislike zombies as monster du jure but I benefitted from the observations offered by the author who visualizes zombies as a force-of-nature, like Godzilla, with the real conflict of a zombie story between the people involved. Monsters, of course, figure into horror, fantasy, and science fiction. Notwithstanding frequent references to science fiction monsters, I believe science fiction requires some more in-depth examination of creature creation than this book can provide, however useful it may be, especially when aliens are involved. That's just a whole separate topic.. But an excellent book, I can't recommend it enough.

If you need a monster in your story, this book can help you with everything from the psychology of monster creation (what makes us scared, etc.) to whether references to your beast should be capitalized or not. Monsters can run the gamut from monstrous human beings to Lovecraftian indescribables. Where do they come from? What are their weaknesses and limitations (those aren’t the same thing)? Are your monsters metaphors, agents of evil, or sources of pity? An archetype, something original, or somewhere between the two? Are they creatures, places (e.g. a haunted house) or things (e.g., a ghost ship)? How do you write about them? The book is easy to read, covers the ground well, and helped me design a monster in my own efforts. If you write fantasy, science fiction, or horror, this book is a great aid.

Fantastic book. Really helps one dig deep into creating compelling and "realistic" monsters. Uses movies and books to further points about how to write them. Great book for any sci-fi, fantasy, and horror (me!) author.

not great. I was not impressed. If you are a writer who is just starting to learn how to write about monster and the creepy things that go bump in the night, and you have very little idea about how to make someone who is reading a scary story truly afraid... then this wouldn't be a bad first stop. If I did not know who HP Lovecraft was, this would have been invaluable to me. It even has one of his short stories printed in its entirety. The collection of Lovecraftisms was nice too. I simply use all of these things too frequently for it to be of much use. I was looking for some pointers on how to make my monsters better, not pointers on how to make my monster exist at all. That is what this book does; it asks you, like a mildly interested friend would ask, what is your monster all about? if you already know the answer, then simply describe it as best you can. otherwise this book will not be much help.

I bought this book as my daughter is getting married this year. I wanted to make sure that we did everything correctly and followed the recommended timelines, etc. The book is very nice and contains all of the information you will need to become the "informed mother of the bride". I am very appreciative of this book and have already shared some of the information with my daughter who was wondering how something should go. I would recommend this book!

The book is just ok. I was hoping for something that included a planning guide - one that I could write in. Information was ok, kind of common sense. Not sure I learned anything new.

Great advice and guidance for moms of the bride, especially in the ways of etiquette of weddings, which are important to me. It follows the same guidance of a standard Bride's wedding planner but with the valuable added advice to moms in the how-to's and not-to's that are so important in successfully planning a wedding with your daughter. I recommend it highly!

This book was so helpful and included the Mother of the Groom. Most books only talk about the Mother of the Bride. I did most of the work and her mom did nothing. So this book was perfect. Small and very detail. Only wedding book you will need. The only one. Truly.

This book is very informative and has very detailed steps on planning a wedding. Also, as the mother of the bride is giving me great advice on when to be involved and when to step back.

This little book is full of good information. The budget guide and the checklists are very helpful.I had no idea what I would be expected to spend but there is a good guide in this book that I have used with each vendor. I bought three books on weddings. This was the smallest, the cheapest and the one I use most often. It is small enough to carry with you while running your "wedding errands".

The print is teeny-tiny and the endless lists are not well-organized, giving the Mother-of-the-Bride an impossible number of tasks. I suspect this is for people in upper echelons of society who need more to do, and judge things my correctness of etiquette as opposed to generosity of heart.

I read several reviews before purchasing this. The index includes the titles in German, however a lot of them are misspelled. Anyone could quickly google the correct name/spelling of all these stories.What REALLY disappointed me was that these are NOT the original stories. This is a child friendly version, which is fine, but not when it is advertised as "original". In Rumpelstiltskin the original says" stieß mit dem rechten Fuß vor Zorn so tief in die Erde, daß es bis an den Leib hineinfuhr, dann packte es in seiner Wut den linken Fuß mit beiden Händen und riß sich selbst mitten entzwei. " (he rammed his right foot so deep into the ground, out of anger, so his body was stuck in the earth, the in his anger he grabbed his left foot with both hands and ripped himself apart), in this book "he ran off full of anger and never returned". Nice looking, book with nice stories, NOT the original!

I bought the kindle edition and was very disappointed, Amazon. The kindle edition does not correspond to the paperback. Not the original first-edition tales. With the kindle edition I got the same Grimm stories that can be found anywhere on the internet. You have to fix this.

For the first time one is able to read the original editions of the famous tales of the Brothers Grimm in English in an excellent translation by Jack Zipes. Published originally in two volumes in 1812 and 1815, they represent the "raw material" (and it is often raw) that was later edited, polished and bowdlerized to be more acceptable to polite society and children. Almost all of us will be familiar with many of the tales as they were later presented culminating in the 7th edition in 1857, which is often seen as definitive.Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were interested in 'recovering the "true" nature of the German people through their so-called natural Poesie, the term that the Grimms often used to describe the formidable ancient Germanic and Nordic literature.' (p. xxiii). Rather than a work of entertainment for children this collection was intended as a scholarly work and included extensive scholarly notes. It was presented with minimal editing with the aim of capturing the original stories as they had been told to the brothers by a variety of sources. Zipes explains, in an interesting introduction, how they wanted to show how the cultivated literature, Kunstpoesie, evolved and eventually replaced Naturpoesie (tales, legends etc.) which survived in oral traditions.There are a total of 156 tales in the two volumes, including nonsense stories, fables, animal and magical stories. All the well-known stories are there - Rapunzel, Snow White, Bluebeard, etc., etc. - but usually in shorter and often more basic forms. For example, in one version of Rapunzel her meetings with the prince are revealed when she gets pregnant and her clothes become too tight. The tales are often also blood thirsty; one in particular is #22 of Volume 1, "How Some Children Played at Slaughtering", where children pretend to be a butcher by slaughtering a playmate in one version or a sibling in another. As Zipes points out, they are tales about "wounded" young people, people who are exploited or in need and abuse of power but also often about wicked people getting their just desserts.As the aim was to capture stories they had been told, there is quite a lot of repetition of stories and themes: three sons with the youngest seen as not too smart but in the end winning out; leaving instructions NEVER to open a particular door; princes and princesses trapped as animals and so on. However, it is interesting to see the variations around a basic theme and how the stories changed in telling and re-telling. It is also noteworthy to see how these themes have continued over history, particularly the large number of stories of metamorphosis, an area of great interest to Ovid.My German is not good enough to comment on the translation but the English is very readable and maintains an air of oral story telling. Zipes also includes a summary of the original notes along with sources when known. Throughout the book are illustrations by Andrea Dezsö, who uses a style reminiscent of Shadow Theater that adds a great deal to the book.This collection is fun and sometimes shocking to read and certainly not the children's book of the later editions. Making this original work available in English shows the significance of the Grimm brothers as academics in philology rather than merely tellers of children's fairy tales.

Ready many different versions of Grimm's Fairy Tales to my 4 sons and now grandsons.Twelve year old Grandson was asking about the difference between all the versions that have been published and if there was an edition that was more true to the original version. Went online to search and found a couple of nice editions with lovely colorful illustrations.I thought he might be "turned off" by the black and white illustrations, but he was not and we were all intrigued by the scholarship behind the writing of this book. The book arrived in two days and it did not disappoint any of us.Grandson was thrilled. We were all surprised by the number of stories in the book.I think this is a great investment for people who are interested in the Fairy Tales -especially the stories we all grew up having read to us and of course the many animated films available over these past several generations.Very high quality in every way.

This review is for the unabridged audio CD version and some of the production issues associated with it. In total, there are fifteen discs that come in a generic plastic case. One case holds all 15 discs. There is no table of contents. Most of the tales a casual fan will not recognize. Many are extremely short. Less than a minute or two in some cases. They do tend to get repetitive at times using the same themes, tones, character types, etc. Overall, worth reading for the most part.My main issue is some of the tales get cutoff suddenly at the end of any given CD. You get the rest of the story once you insert the following disc but it can be annoying. Take Cinderella, only about one minute of the story was left to be told on the following disc. Couldn't they fit one more minute of audio on the first disc? Its odd and seems completely avoidable. Even more annoying, it happens to many of the more well known tales....Rapunzel, Cinderella, Puss in Boots, and possibly Hansel and Gretel. I could be wrong about the last one. These fairly tales start to run together at some point.If I had known of this problem I probably would have passed on purchasing this item. Admittedly, its a minor issue. Just thought I'd share since there are no current reviews for the audio CDs.

Oh, my eyes... the print is so small even with reading glasses on, I need the brightest light to read this. I wanted something to leaf through and mark up in anticipation to a trip to Germany. There are beautiful pictures and lots of good advice, but having trouble reading it. Not Fodor's fault, but be aware if you, like me, need reading glasses. I used Fodor's to plan a trip to WDW back in the days before Kindles and good travel/ratings sites. Their guide was immensely helpful.

We used this guide book and were able to do things off the usually tourtist trails and loved for 3 weeks. Most enjoyed.

This book is really amazing! The pictures stir the imagination and please the eye, and the text is amazingly informative. I used this with my son (second grade) as an introduction to the solar system, and I have to admit it was a little too advanced for him. He did enjoy the pictures a lot and the info I selected to read to him was understandable, but I did have to pick and choose. This is in no way a complaint though, as I plan to reuse this book in a few years, and that will allow me to present a great deal of new info.Overall I am incredibly pleased with this book and I plan to use it for years to come. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the planets, or for a homeschool library.

Wish I could give this book ten stars!The layout, great photos and what I appreciated was all the bullet notes supporting a very readable text. Got it for my 10 yr grandson to peak his interest. But the book is for all ages. I'm 75 yrs and think The Planets is fascinating. Do not hesitate to add this to your library 🌎🌗

Beautiful book with lots of information about all of the planets, plus the sun, comets, and asteroids. My only wish is that it included how to pronounce some of the words. I had to do a lot of internet searching to learn how to pronounce Kuiper.I read this with my 5yr old. Much of it is over his head, but he still really enjoys it a lot.

I don't know when this brief book was published. I know I have owned it since 197?. In 2010 I followed the direction to hand bind 54 copies of a fairly simple book and found the process frustrating. The directions were concise and the pictures were few. About half way through the binding process I had to go online to order linen thread from Amazon, and was directed to several sites on-line with directions that were easier to follow and many pictures in every stage of the process. I wish I had started there, although I believe this book is useful for back up referencing.

This is an excellent book. One of its most useful aspects are the instructions for building basic book-binding tools, a drilling press, a finishing press, and a box mortise. Most other books either try to do without these tools or assume that you have (expensive) professional ones available.I would love to update this book to expand the finishing press to be big enough to accommodate binding 8.5" x 11" materials.Also useful would be some information on sewing individual signatures into a complete book. That would change the title to something like, "How to Clothbind any book."
