#268,548 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Although I live in Ohio, I grew up as a fan of Bill Russell, Red Auerbach and the Boston Celtics. As I have gotten older and learned more about those two men in particular, my admiration has only deepened. This book, is not a biography, but a look at Auerbach in a way that a true biography might not be able to do. It is almost like being there as he interacts with a select group of people and regales them with story after story about many of the names (familiar and unfamiliar) that he encountered during his career. It is a thoroughly readable, enjoyable book for any fan of basketball history. He truly was a man who did not judge by ethnicity; instead, he looked at character. As he said in the book, you win by having good players who are also good people. A close look at the Celtic dynasty of the 50s and 60s is proof that it works. I highly recommend this book. I just wish that it was longer and that it contained more stories about Russell and Red's relationship with him over the years.

I first came across this book in a used book store. As a basketball junkie I bought it immediately and really enjoyed it. I have discussed it with several other Bball Junkies who - like me - both laughed and cried while reading it. There are lots and lots of behind the scenes stories at every level of the game that confirmed for me that BASKETBALL is the only sport worth really caring about. One of my favorites was the Celtics drafting a good college player who had been seriously injured in an accident; and then flying him from the Midwest to Boston to be introduced as a team member, with a complete uniform, locker and other team status markings.Other than Bball, the stories from and about the Tuesday 11:00 AM Chinese Food luncheons are worth twice whatever you have to pay for the book (not a Kindle). Following directly from the Tuesday lunches, the trip to the White House is another magnificent story. The reason for me being able to write this review is because I ordered another copy of the book through Amazon to give as a present to a distant friend. The opportunity to spread the word to so many other BJ's is a great pleasure and I hope others decide to buy it. I know it is not Feinstein's most famous book, but his skills are just as obvious here as in anything else he has published.

I am not a big fan of basketball, but I do remember Red Auerbach when he coached the Boston Celtics. Red and many of his friends have weekly Tuesday get-togethers at the China Doll Restaurant in Washington, D.C. where they swap stories with one another. Red gives his opinions on coaches today who he feels overcoach their team and often play to the cameras and fans by jumping up and down and screaming with their team up by 20 or 30 points with a minute or two in the game. Red's rule for winning is simple: Get good players who are good people and you will have a winning team. People say Red was a great coach because he had great players. But, the author adds, "Who do you think chose the players?" Red always has had a good relationship with Bobby Knight. Knight said, "He (Red) was nice to me for no reason years ago and he never stopped." A pet peeve of his is P.A. announcers who mumble the names of the visiting players during introductions and then boost up the P.A. system when the home team is introduced "as if they just saved the planet." Red finally gave up coaching at the age of forty eight due to exhaustion. Dealing with having to scout and being a general manager and keeping the team's talent pool coming had worn him out. Reading this book is a learning experience for coaches on all levels, and I am proof you don't have to be a basketball fan to enjoy the book.

John Feinstein's books have been more miss than hit this decade, which is why it's a pleasure to go back and read one of his gems. This time his subject is Red Auerbach, the long time coach/GM of the Boston Celtics, and the man who has more championship rings than anyone in the history of the game. The book is basically a collection of Red's favorite Celtics anecdotes, which he often told over lunch to a select group of friends at his favorite Chinese restaurant The China Doll in Washington D.C. (now closed) The book is written in a breezy, conversational style, which will make you feel as though you are seated next to Red at the table as he holds court.Let Me Tell You A Story is a must-read, and will be of specific interest to Celtics fans, but should have something to offer general basketball fans as well. However, if you are a fan of the Lakers, Knicks, or Bulls, you might not like what Red has to say about your team ;)

Of all the Sports that Feinstein covers I think he covers Basketball Best. This is a superb tale of the Legendary Boston Celtic's LEADER. I was told that Red grew up in the DC area going to a Segregated Roosevelt High School. I wondered how someone coming from a Segregated Environment could draft one of the first 3 African Americans in the Now NBA. Also how he could select the first African American Coach. Well he grew up in Brooklyn in a multi-cultural Neighborhood. Fascinating stories about the Carnegie Deli area. He went to college in DC (GW) (Which I knew), and then later taught at Roosevelt (Which may have been where the confusion started.) I think it helped that I have been in the Chinatown Restaurants that are the setting for a lot of the stories, This an absolutely Great Read, and one of Feinstein's best.

I initially purchased this book due to being a lifelong basketball fan as well as someone who has enjoyed John Feinstein's books. Almost from the beginning, I was treated to both the fascinating reminiscences as well as wisdom of one of America's true treasures, Red Auerbach. I am hard-pressed to remember any book that I enjoyed as much and especially delighted in his stories and tales involving George Washington University, our shared alma mater.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a treasure trove of basketball history wrapped around a love for Red Auerbach by his limitless universe of friends who gather weekly at a Washington Chinese restaurant. My only wish is that I could attend or be a fly on the wall for one of these lunches.

Encyclopedia Mythologica: Fairies and Magical Creatures Pop-Up, by Matthew Reinhart

From School Library Journal

Grade 1–6—Through fanciful three-dimensional artwork and well-written narrative, Reinhart and Sabuda introduce the whimsical, mostly hidden world of fairies and their kin. Examples of fey folk from different countries and cultures cavort about the pages, including bumblebee-riding pillywiggins (England and Wales), the shy abatwa who sleep in anthills (South Africa), and the unruly kappa that have been known to kidnap toddlers (Japan). Elves and gnomes, a menagerie of enchanted creatures, nature spirits, and mythical dwellers of the deep are also covered. From a delightful rendering of Shakespeare's Titania (complete with fluttering wings), to a frontal view of a unicorn gracefully lifting its head, to a movement-filled image of Amphitrite and Poseidon in their aquatic chariot, the paper sculptures are elegant and enticing. Additional foldout booklets, also embellished with pop-ups, assist in presenting the well-researched text, which concisely conveys a great deal of information. Though its delicate design makes it difficult to circulate, this handsome volume could be used for display or to introduce or inspire further study of folklore, mythology, and literature.—Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. This book is beautiful. Not only do you have the larger pop-ups that spring to life when you turn the page, but there are also several mini pop-up pages within a page. The artistry is beautiful, and the pop-ups can be viewed from different angles to see different parts of the picture (unlike traditional pop-ups that are designed to be viewed from one reading angle only).I disagree with Amazon and/or the publisher (not sure who is to blame for this) about the appropriate age/grade range. It's listed on the product page as for ages 4-8 and grades 1-6. It's definitely NOT for preschoolers. The mini pop-ups are too hard for little hands to open, plus it's too delicate. Additionally, the text is more appropriate for elementary or older kids. I actually think this would be best as a gift for a pre-teen, teenager, and young-at-heart adult who loves fairies. I purchased my copy for someone in her 60s who I know will love it!

I always loved pop-up books as a child - and still do as a 72 year old. They do much to stimulate the imagination: better than books merely with pictures and much, much better than TV or movies (which leave little for a child to imagine on his/her own). Although pop-ups tend to be fragile this one seems a little sturdier that usual. I bought this book as a birthday present for a little girl who will be four in July. She not only believes in fairies but thinks she is one herself! I can't wait to see the surprise and delight on her face when she opens this. I know her mother will supervise her enjoyment of the book until she is old enough to be less destructive with it.Furthermore, the price of this book (with the discount) can't be beat. Also the packaging was done very well. Besides the robust mailing package it came in it was wrapped in a clear covering that is like a pouch that can be opened for examination and resealed for presentation.

This book, and the others by Matthew Reinhart, are incredible! They are insanely detailed and planned out. Each page has a large and very elaborate pop-up as the main focus of the page, and then 4 more small pop-ups on each corner. The smaller ones are just as creative and intricate.Cheaper pop-up books can fold in wrong when trying to close them, but these close just right every time! They are so complicated in design that I am afraid that when I go to close it that it will bend or crease wrong, but it closes smoothly and correctly.I bought 5 of his books for Christmas present and read them all ahead of time. You can tell right when you open them that someone put a ton of love and pride into the planning and production of these books. Highly recommend these!

I bought this for my grand kids after seeing the demo here on the Amazon site. When I received it I had to look it over myself and I was thrilled. Each page had several pop ups and I enjoyed looking at them all.On Christmas day when the kids opened this up they stopped everything they were doing to come and look at the neat pictures with me. I watched as the 4 year old opened one of the pop ups that contained a goblin and she caught her breath and stepped back a bit. They were thrilled just as much as I was.I am going to be looking at all the other offerings like this one for upcoming birthdays. The book is about 2 inches thick and the paper used is quite heavy so I expect it to wear fairly well.

I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my little 4 year-old step-niece who LOVES fairies and pretty mythical creatures. The pop ups are complex, bold and very beautiful. The little corner flap pop-ups will allow her to interact/take part in the book...though they are a bit tricky to pull out of their corner holders, so I expect the book will go through a good deal of pulling and accidental tearing of pages unless an adult is there to help. The pages and paper ARE very sturdy though. There isn't a story to this; rather, there are interesting little facts of the worlds/histories of fairies, elves, gnomes, and merpeople. I'm not sure a 4 year old will be captivated by this, but she'll grow into liking such details as much as she loves little fictional stories:)

Mr. Reinhart is a genius, no doubt about it. In this book there are dimensional fairies peeking from foliage, brownies hiding in corners, and trolls waiting to create trouble for passers-by. Some figures "magically" transform from one thing to another, just as we might imagine them to do in fairy tales. I give it only four stars because the engineering falls just a little short of the "wow" factor, and the text is somewhat depressing. Nonetheless, this and the Limited Edition version will certainly remain in my collection to be enjoyed for years to come.

This was a gift for both my wife and daughter. Absolutely Amazing and well worth it.My wife has been a fan of Fairy Tales etc. since she was a kid and this book blew her away.Talk about adding to the magic of Fairy Tales and growing the imagination of a young child...WOW!This book is a great keepsake to be past on from one generation to another. Very well made and looks amazing. Just be careful when opening and closing. It's made from thick paper but looks like it can still rip if treated too rough.Highly recommend.

Pros:1. The order came quickly2. Everything was in good condition (Condition New & hard cover).3. Very creative and ingenious book. It's complex and marvelous to see how it all fit together.4. Different types of pop up;Cons:NoneOverall, I would high recommend anyone to get this book. I'll get the other ones too like the one from Narnia, Peter Pan, and others.Recommendation:Perhaps include a pop up folder for a CD/DVD that contains the author's other books or works. Maybe a process from design to gluing and texturing.

Review

"If Howard Bloom is only 10 percent right, we’ll have to drastically revise our notions of the universe. . . . [His] argument will rock your world." -BARBARA EHRENREICH, National Magazine Award winner and author of Nickel and Dimed "Enthralling. Astonishing. Written with the panache of the Great Blondin turning somersaults on the rope above Niagara. Profound, extraordinarily eclectic, and crazy. The most exciting cliff-hanger of a book I can remember reading." -JAMES BURKE, Creator and host of seven BBC-TV series, including Connections"Bloody hell. . . . What a truly extraordinary book. I’m gobsmacked. It’s a fast-paced, highly readable, and deeply researched thriller-documentary that grapples with the big issues of the universe. . . . Food for the brain." -FRANCIS PRYOR, President of the Council for British Archaeology, author of Britain BC "For those of us who do not invoke god(s) to explain things, there is a challenge—where did the complexity of the physical and natural world come from? . . . This deep, provocative, spectacularly well-written book provides some answers. . . . A wonderful book." -ROBERT SAPOLSKY, MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" winner and author of Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers"Strong. Like a STEAM ROLLER. Impressive. Great." -RICHARD FOREMAN, MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" winner and founder of the Ontological-Hysteric Theater "A deeply engrossing and mind-bending meld of philosophy and science, written with great clarity, humor, and daring." -CHARLES SIEBERT, Contributing writer, New York Times Sunday Magazine"Truly awesome. . . . Bursting with insights and ideas, delivered with delightful verve and zest. . . . A tantalizing, fresh new view of the cosmos for humankind."-DUDLEY HERSCHBACH, Winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in ChemistryFrom the Hardcover edition.

As an atheist, this looked like it was going to be a great book --- it's very well written and looked like there would be some great material. However, I got into trouble with it pretty quickly and didn't even bother going past the first chapter. Here's the problem - Bloom starts by suggesting that we need to get rid of some preconceived notions such as 1 mightn't always be equal to 1 and more generally A may not be equal to A. He starts with an example of whether you (A) are the same as a clone of you, which he also refers to as A.I have to call bull on this. He's welcome to call you A and a clone of you A1 and then have a discussion as to whether A and A1 are the same but you have to define what you mean by equality before you can start playing games with definitions such as A = ARather surprising to me given that the author starts by talking about building the entire number system using Peano's axioms.I'm reminded of the old "paradox" question, "if an unstoppable force meets an immovable object, what happens?" The thing is, as soon as you accept the concept of an unstoppable force then you don't get to introduce the concept of an immovable object! So it just makes me agree more strongly with Stephen Hawking's comment that the art of philosophy is dead!

An ambitious work like this, unless it is a masterpiece, requires an immense amount of additional writing to address all of the difficulties.I confess I'm puzzled at the intensity of praise for The God Problem. Several initial pages and the back of the dustcover are filled with endorsements, and the back cover flap describes the author in such hyperbolic terms as would make most of us blush, were anything close applied to ourselves. Perhaps some of the prospective blurbistas demurred. And despite all of the contributions thus, I only spotted one hard-science person, a 1986 Nobelist in Chemistry, and no mathematicians.A friend called me to recommend the work, which at the time he'd not quite finished, but with which he was clearly impressed. Having tried, on his previous recommendation of another Bloom book, The Genius of the Beast, to get through that tome, I was somewhat skeptical. But when he went on to tell me how he'd never known about Peano, which he pronounced like Beano, I thought: what in the wide world of sports does an axiom system for the natural numbers, introduced around the turn of the 20th century when the logical foundations of mathematics were all the rage, have to do with the nonexistence of God? So I ordered the book. The Peano postulates are introduced in the context of a class Bloom was in at Reed College. He makes the material sound as if it is well-nigh impenetrable, and cites the high SAT scores (what?) of the class members to support his claim that they were very special. After a bit more reading I realized that the author is high on axiomatics, and rules for generating “complexity” out of minimal beginnings, and then thought: Ah! I bet as well I'll find Wolfram and his obsession with cellular automata featured prominently. And indeed I did. But I did not find a convincing connection as to how much of this pertains to the cosmos of physical space-time, let alone one populated by conscious and self-conscious beings.Backing up a bit, as others have noticed: this is not a book by a "professional" atheist like Dawkins. Bloom, after all, is originally a successful promoter and salesman (see Genius of the Beast for some historical details), and had to find a fairly sensational title to assure getting his "oxygen" of attention. And he touches on some of the standard arguments against God, the "cause of the first cause" one that appealed to Russell, and the Problem of Evil one that perplexes many. Without revealing exactly my own evolving views, we're not talking about some guy “bearded and bathrobed”, as Howard terms Him toward the book's end. So this is not a polemical work like Hitchens' God is Not Great. It is rather a rambling attempt at system-building and something by way of a confessional, indeed for me rather embarrassingly revealing of the extent to which its author is still feeling the acute influence of who he was as a child and adolescent, "growing up awkward" in Buffalo.Others have remarked on the gimmick of insisting that we become Boy Howard for a day, and this leading to sentence structures and momentary misapprehensions that quickly become very tedious. But perhaps others find them charming and evocative. As mentioned, the sheer length of the book, even if it were considerably condensed by cutting out a lot of florid verbiage, makes it impossible to do a succinct enumeration of all of the issues. But the epistemological material in the early part of the book is mostly a succession of what professional philosophers call "logical howlers". They are presumed to shock us and leave us in awe, I suppose. There are also astonishing distortions of rather-well-established physics, like thermodynamics, which within its appropriately-circumscribed domain works just fine. Here and there, swipes are taken at Ayn Rand, but referencing only her novel Atlas Shrugged. What would have served the author better: her Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, a partial account of her theory of concepts, and particularly the parts about concepts of consciousness and axiomatic concepts. And then there’s Shannon and Weaver and information theory. No sooner has he stated explicitly that they said that their term "information" did not have the same meaning as the conventional and colloquial, that it did not encompass meaning, than we are off and running about Shannon's "mistake". Now I do agree with Bloom here that the term has been colossally misused. At times the prose reaches such heights of obscurity as to beggar description, reminding me of the statement by Randy California of the 60s rock group Spirit, that "Everything is Everything". Here is a sample, I hope reproducible as part of the fair use doctrine:"So information is not necessarily two-way communication. Information can go one way. What turns it into information? Translation. Interpretation. In other words, the key to making something neutral into information is Shannon's missing ingredient: meaning. And what is meaning? Movement. The movement of a quark, the movement of a mote of space dust, the movement of a tongue, the movement of a pen, the movement of a hand on a keyboard, or the movement of Robert Darwin's block of stone with fossilized plesiosaur bones to the Royal Society (65).Which leaves a question. Is anything really neutral? Is everything meaning waiting to be invented? Waiting to be understood? But there are more corollaries to the idea that information is anything that a translator can decode. There are more truly peculiar implications to the simple idea that information is any signal that can be turned into a response." (pp. 431-432)I find this not only baffling, but almost motivationally suspicious. Look at the number of concepts deployed here, and ask yourself why, with this suggestion of identifications among them, do we need distinct words for each of them. When we get to fractals and the Mandelbrot set, a simple example of its iterative generation would have been helpful, instead of --- after this apology: "I hate to go incomprehensible on you", he pulls out references to Babylon and building city walls from earlier in the book. Contrast this with something that addresses the math in clear terms, a short section in The Princeton Companion to Mathematics (see page 244), a wonderful book which has, as well, a nice observation at the outset about Russell's definition of math and its near-absence of application to what mathematicians do nowadays. And while you are at it, see if you can find any mention whatever in its 1034 pages of Wolfram and cellular automata, a pursuit which has, I suspect, tragically isolated a brilliant mind. And I can't avoid mention of the Conway-Kochen-Dyson-Kaufmann material, that elementary particles' apparent indeterminism means that in some sense they have free will. Really? I hasten to add that all of those folks are furiously bright, but I feel they have been seduced into serious lapses here. However, I'll have to dig out the original references to see in detail what they said. After looking at this curious work from many angles, it struck me that one word rarely seen was Love. So I went into the index, and there it was: love, pp. 515-518. How could I not have recalled it? Well, it bypasses any attempt to describe love other than in terms of war, conflict, "dominance hierarchies", pecking orders --- and begins with, wait for it, protons! I won't spoil it for you.So, as a summary assessment of the book: stylistically maddening, thought-provoking, a couple of good ideas, but a book with the hidden agenda --- an agenda hidden even from the author, probably --- that the purported godless cosmos, following simple rules, had to produce a Howard Bloom who simply has to be the way he is.

Everyone enjoys a good, well explained theory. This book contains no theory, and the explanations are comedically bad. The mark of a great teacher is the ability to explain complicated concepts so simply that anyone can understand. Bloom just quotes Wikipedia.Bloom appears to be under the impression that comparing quarks to Harry Potter bridges some gap in understanding. It doesn't. Instead he winds up with a volume that should have been 1/5th the size, where seemingly half the sentences end in question marks and which appears intended to stroke the ego of a four year old rather than the intellect of an adult. Who cares whether Bloom has a point or not? Wading through this monstrosity wouldn't be worth the effort if he did.And by the way, he doesn't have a point. None. After 558 pages there is a 5 page "conclusion" which just restates questions. The subtitle of the book "How a Godless Universe Creates" is answered with a 5 page version of 'we don't know.'I doubt anyone reading this review will get a visceral sense of just how bad this book is without a quote, so here goes:"And what does that mean for us human beings? It is our obligation to defeat this annihilation by squeezing all that we are, all that we value, through the annihilation at the bagel's edge, through the anally tiny hole at the next universe's center, and into the universe to come. It is our task to come through the next annihilation rejoicing. Intact and giddy with the power of our feat."Yes, that really is the punctuation Bloom uses. No, putting the line into context doesn't help.If you are looking for a good book then keep looking. This should never have been published, and showing it to children should be considered per se child abuse and a crime against their basic human rights.

I'm ashamed at having been lulled into purchasing this book. His sentences are frequently fragmented and flow horribly; he is wholly and entirely unqualified to be answering or even deeply considering "The God Problem,"; and he is narcissistic in thinking that his being a self-proclaimed ardent atheist, as well as an amateur philosopher, somehow places him at the forefront of knowledge.I always finish books, but this assortment of drivel-coated pages made me break that conviction.

I got this for the missus as she's such a big fan of the series. She loved the story, which is a nice continuation of the sage. The book itself is also great quality, nicely put together hard back that is well printed.

I am an avid fan of the Outlander books and tv series. I first read the books over 25 years ago or so. For heavens sake, I've even been to Scotland 3 times and on one of the tours, visited several of the Outlander castles. This book is one of most boring books I have ever read in my life. There are thousands and thousands of words and hundreds of pages SAYING NOTHING. Where is the editing on this? There is so much about John Grey and his brother! Does anyone care about John Grey? He should be relegated to minor status and yet a huge part of the book is about him DOING NOTHING. I am unbelievably disappointed and disgusted with this book. Shame on you, Diana Gabaldon! You have stooped to writing uninteresting things about uninteresting characters in what was once an exciting story line. Did you do it for the money? This is just a crushing disappointment.

***No Spoilers****I have been hooked on this series since the original Outlander book, and have read every book, some more than once often in anticipation of the next book. Diana Galbaldon's writing style is easy and flowing, she is extremely accurate with her historic research. You cannot go wrong choosing any of the books in the series to read, or even the John Grey books, which I also read. I enjoyed Written in My Hearts Own Blood very much, I even paced myself to read it so that it could be savored. However, I do not care for the ending of this book and had rather hoped this book would be the conclusion. It will be years until the next book, and will have to wait patiently. I have to say that at some point with the aging of the key characters the series would need to come to an end, I was hoping that death would not be the end. I am still hopeful. :o)

SPOILERI really enjoy the Outlander series and was trying to read this slowly as Book 9 doesn't even have a release date yet, so it'll be some time before I can catch up with these characters again. The ending of the book literally gave me chills. I can't wait for Book 9! However, and here's a spoiler-Bree and Roger's son, Jem, is kidnapped by a man that has discovered one of Bree's parent's letters referring to the lost Stuart gold hidden in the Spaniards Cave in NC; Jem being kid napped because he's the only one that knows the location. Roger-and one of his time traveling relatives go back into the past with the notion of finding Jem and his kidnapper-while under the assumption the kidnapper is searching for the gold. Unfortunately, they end up in the wrong time-like, Jamie Fraser is approx. 19 in Paris and his father Brian is still alive. Regardless, they still think Jem is there and it doesn't cross either of their minds that the Rising hasn't even happened yet and therefore there's no way the gold would even be in existence in NC at that time frame because Jamie and Claire haven't even met yet. I don't understand why this thought wouldn't have occurred to them. I get he meets his dad-they were both thinking "Jem" going through the stones so naturally they're placed in a time where Roger's dad Jeremiah "Jerry" is...um, ok. Then, the kidnapper never actually left the present time with Jem-he's just harassing Bree for some reason. I'm really not sure why...he wants to rape her? But ok, I can live with it bc luckily this plot line more or less resolves itself-thank goodness. Also, William is super annoying. I hope in Book 9 he becomes less whiny, incapable, and less prone to throwing tantrums all the time. Very glad, Ian got a happy bit.

I have read all of the Outlander series and a few of the Lord John books. At the end of each, something happens that leaves me wanting and waiting for the next one again. Now that the family is reunited over time, there is much more story to tell. I have become so familiar with the characters and their ability to adapt to different centuries in time is amazing. I can only hope Diana Gabaldon plans to lead us through yet another chapter in the lives of the Frazier's. The historical accuracy is educational, well-researched and fitting to the story.

I think this book has the potential of truly helping a dedicated person overcome compulsive use of porn. It begins by clearly spelling out the many negative consequences of habitually using porn, which needs to be clarified and comprehended by porn users as they begin their journey to recover. Being the wife of a recovering compulsive porn user, I strongly appreciate the in-depth explanation of a partner's emotions when secret porn is discovered. It was worth reading just to learn that other partners feel as devastated as I have felt over the last several weeks. My emotions are all over the place and match almost exactly the authors' description. (I guess I am a textbook case.) Somehow it soothed me, to some degree, to found out that my emotions were normal--my husband thought I was overreacting. After all, "all men use porn." A chunk of the book provides steps and strategies to ending porn addiction. It also has advice that can help partners ride out their strong negative emotions and heal. However, I would say the main emphasis is on helping the porn user rather than the suffering partner.

I am a licensed independent clinical social worker and addictions professional working in a unique environment. I have noticed the significant increase of clientele who have entered our institution with not only a pornography addiction, but it had escalated into viewing of child porn. I have decided to develop an educational course solely for our pornography addicts and purchased three books to review. "The Porn Trap" is not only an excellent resource for those who are overcoming problems caused by pornography, it is a excellent resource for the actual development of my group; along with the educational DVD I purchased.I recommend this book to both professionals and clients!

My expectations when I bought the book was to learn about how pornography affects the dynamics of relationships. From a personal perspective I have used pornography and before I even picked up this book I knew that it affected how I interacted with other people because of guilt, shame, and the sexual objectivity I place on women. It was very enlightening to read about the many different situations individuals went through in the book. Pornography is a very scary thing and the stories in this book showcased the tragic impacts it has on people. Not only how it can result in a lost job, wife, or family, but many of these men use pornography as an outlet of intimacy and rob themselves and their wives of a fulfilling intimate relationship. It is very tragic to realize this because so many people will walk through life and not experience the abundance of joy that could come from that. I am not married, but I hope to experience that one day too. In today's culture I would recommend everyone read this if I could... God bless

I realize saying I love book like this is dubious at best. But Maltz understands the seduction of porn. As a clinician I am always on the look out for good resources and this is one.

This book has helped me cope with the discovery of my husband's porn usage. It is not only great for the addict, but also great for the partner. It validated a lot of the emotions I was feeling, helping me to understand my own reaction, but also gave me insight into my husband's addiction. It explained a lot about the interactions in our marriage that I didn't even know were related to porn usage. If I had the knowledge in this book, I probably would have known before we even got married that he was addicted to porn just by watching his habits and attitude. Now it is helping me to have faith in my husband that he is no longer watching porn just by allowing me to understand what I should be watching for in our interactions and what types of warning signs I should be aware of if he begins to interact with porn again.I bought several books about this topic trying to find one that would help me understand and cope. This book is the best one that I've read. If you only buy one book, buy this one.

I could understand more about the addiction and helped me to gain insight of what was happening.

Most of the books that I read on the issue of pornography. One from a faith based perspective and lack scientific explanation. This book delivers in that area and more. I like that this is from the standpoint of an LCSW and from years of working with clients. Truly a great read!

One of my friends was married to someone battling the porn addiction. I borrowed this book from her to help understand what she and her husband were going through, and it was extremely helpful. It helped to provide a context and helpful advice.

About the Author

Frank Miller began his career in comics in the late 1970s, first drawing then writing Daredevil for Marvel Comics, creating what was essentially a crime comic disguised as a superhero book. It was on Daredevil that Miller gained notoriety, honed his storytelling abilities, and took his first steps toward becoming a giant in the comics medium. After Daredevil came Ronin, a science-fiction samurai drama that seamlessly melded Japanese and French comics traditions into the American mainstream; and after that, the groundbreaking and acclaimed Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One, both of which not only redefined the classic character, but also revitalized the industry itself. Finally able to fulfill his dream of doing an all-out, straight-ahead crime series, Miller introduced Sin City in 1991. Readers responded enthusiastically to Miller's tough-as-leather noir drama, creating an instant sales success. His multi-award-winning 300 series from Dark Horse, a telling of history's most glorious and underreported battle, was brought to full-blooded life in 1998. In 2001, Miller returned to the superhero genre with the best-selling Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again. Frank Miller continues to push the medium into new territories, exploring subject matter previously untouched in comics, and his work consistently receives the highest praise from his industry peers and readers everywhere. In 2005, with the hugely successful Sin City movie release, co-directed with Robert Rodriguez, Miller added a director's credit to his already impressive resumé and introduced his characters to an entirely new legion of fans worldwide.

Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander by Frank Miller and colors by Alex Sinclair is a visual delight with epic narration. The art is some of Frank's loosest and ranges from nearly indecipherable images to gorgeous designs. The story is a bit disjointed with the first two issues reading like a comic book sequel to 300 while the last three issues feel like a storybook that gives a brief overview of the events from Darius to Alexandre. While not as good as the first, it's still a beautiful volume to look at and a lot of fun to read.
