The questions are thought provoking, but some of them are answered by reading the author's next questions. There is not enough study content in the book to justify the price. If you want actual study content, you must buy his other books which are part one and part two. I feel that this one lacks substance. If you already have good study guides and are looking for questions to ponder individually or in group study, this might be perfect for you. I was looking for something with more information to go along with the questions.

I bought several of N.T. Wright's study guides for our church as we launched a new style of small groups. We used them as launch pads for the small group facilitators in developing their own studies and questions to ask in their groups. They have been a great blessing to us in that process. Wright does a great job of getting at some of meat of scripture in ways that invite people to engage in scripture at a deeper level. I would recommend these to anyone looking for a guide to their group bible study.

Great guide for the Gospel of John. Makes a very deep subject simple and easy to understand. We used this for our small group and the homework was not overwhelming but it helped to facilitate great discussions.

N. T. Wright has the rare gift of blending serious biblical exegesis with imaginative and simple presentation of the Bible. I recommend this book to everyone. One slight problem with the Kindle edition: some commentaries come in two volume (like Matthew) and the number indicating the volume is not visible on the small kindle icon.

In-depth yet readable guide to John.I gained an understanding of Jesus and his purpose in a greater way then any other book I've read previously. I highly recommend this book if you are struggling to regain a connection to Good or if your spiritual tank is running dry. Very hopeful and insightful

NT Wright has a way of interpreting the gospels that help bring them into the 21st century. He brings the writer’s message into our everyday life.

This is a very thought provoking study guide but the group I am using it with is finding it difficult. I'm also finding that the chapters are hard to complete in one session.

Fantastic book, easy read.More than 50% of my life I've been a runner. I'm a white Caucasian male who is trying to always get better and I look up to East Africans in the sport of running because, quite frankly, they're the best. I'm always curious to know what kind of training they do differently, or what kind of food helps them. Obviously I'm aware that genetics plays a large role and no ONE THING will make me into a superstar outside of more training. But, I like learning about new cultures and seeing how I can implement changes into my running regiment using Kenyan tradition!This book is a fantastic read because it's a story about the authors journey to kenya to uncover secrets about kenyan success. What you find is that there are like 10+ "secrets" that, when all put together, lead to kenyan success. Not ONE thing like going barefoot, being at altitude, etc.

After reading "Born To Run", I purchased this book to learn more about why people run! This book is interesting - the best part being the final chapters. I learned why and how Kenyans strive to be athletes, how they train, the foods that sustain them, the trails they run on (with lions and other wildlife watching!) and what they do with their prize money as the best runners compete in worldwide competitions. The author and his family traveled to a Kenyan training camp, lived in a rented house in the town. and made many friends. The author met and ran with the top athletes in world competition including those who won olympic medals.Seventy years ago my husband ran long distance track in high school - he was a farm boy, spent early childhood in the mountains of West Virginia, and ran in school competitions barefoot! He won medals and enjoyed himself. Others wore sneakers but remember, they did not have thick soles! So now, with a son-in-law who runs triathalons and is training for an ultra marathon, I am amazed at how running shoes are changing to near barefoot status again.If you like to keep up with track competition and enjoy running or just watching from the sidelines like me (wishful thinking!) enjoy the book.

This enjoyable tale captures the enthusiastic spirit and genial disposition of its author and the willing, "let's go for it" all-in cooperation of his wife, Marietta. [Without her support, no trip, no book.]Finn's recounting details his decision to up sticks for Iten, a town in Rift Valley Province - the epicenter of Kenyan running dominance for the last decade or more. Ostensibly, this book is about Finn's 'game improvement' plan: having tasted a bit of success as an undergraduate runner, he takes up a friend's counsel to train hard for a year and reap the benefits. Being a good journalist, why not do that in the Rift Valley?In truth, the book is more about an exploration of Kenyan running dominance. What makes them such astonishing world-beaters? Finn's neat writing approach is to look for "the secret," all the while taking note of - and tallying - one factor after another chapter after chapter. The secret? After piling on the evidence, he concludes rightfully that there's no one thing. Here's his well-considered summary:"For six months I've been piecing together the puzzle of why Kenyans are such good runners. In the end there was no elixir, no running gene, no training secret that you could package up and present with flashing lights and fireworks. Nothing that Nike could replicate and market as the latest running fad. No, it was too complex, yet too simple, for that. It was everything, and nothing. I list the secrets in my head: the tough, active childhood, the barefoot running, the altitude, the diet, the role models, the simple approach to training, the running camps, the focus and dedication, the desire to succeed, to change their lives, the expectation that they can win, the mental toughness, the lack of alternatives, the abundance of trails to train on, the time spent resting, the running to school, the all-persuasive running culture, the reverence for running."I love the construction of the story: instead of formulating this list and studying the factors, it's the reverse that happens - Finn encounters each of these factors in turn in his daily life and training and then thinks, hmmm, that's another thing to add to the list. It involves a neat serendipity in his book: one of his co-runners in Iten is a "young American student named Anders" (we're never told his surname although - hint - it's 'Samuelson') Eventually, he "work[s] out that Anders' mother is Joan Benoit"...a fact not easy for Finn to work out because he gets a jumbled tale from his host, Godfrey, and - unstated - Anders is a humble kid (the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree).Later, upon the occasion of a visit to Iten by "Anders' Mom," Finn relates that "not knowing much about her career, I looked her up on the Internet and managed to find a video of her Olympic victory in 1984." He then proceeds to school his readers about her 'amazing' breakaway run in which she "plow[ed] on with a look of steel on her face..." Huh? By most accounts the seminal event in the history women's running and you have to look it up on the Internet to see what it was about? Seriously? Then, two pages later he recounts an episode with her while driving in Iten and describes her as a "small, elderly white woman with short gray hair." Elderly? Joan Benoit Samuelson is an attractive, 55-year-old woman who, yes, wears her hair short and naturally gray.That irritation aside, "Running with the Kenyans" is a delightful book. Anyone with an interest in sport should pick it up.

I really wasn't aware of the extent that Rose played in editing her mother's early books. I knew she had a hand in the process, but it seems she did a whole lot more. She was quite an accomplished author in her own right, but chose to let me mother take the credit for the most part. This book also gave a good picture of the history of our country during this time frame. It was a very different time than what one might think was happening. I did feel that parts were redundant and the story line dragged a bit, but for the most part, it held my interest. Fans of the Little House stories who don't want to have their warm, fuzzy memories of the stories spoiled by the facts should probably pass on this book.

Good read, as a fan of LIW I found the book informative and useful, but I would have enjoyed some photos for the subjects the author spoke of, it would have awesome to see some of the the farm, or the documents she described etc

A thoughtful book about the complex relationship between Laura Ingalls Wilder and her daughter Rose, who collaborated on the Little House books series. It focuses on the very different lives of pioneer mother and city-dweller daughter caught between two worlds.

This gave a very human perspective on the daughter of Laura Ingals Wilder as well as Laura. It just shows, once again, that we are all very flawed human beings, we do the best we can given the times we're born into, our basic personality and our parentage. I thought it was good take on talented, persistent people in two,if not more, generations.

Anytime I see a book with a new slant on Laura, I want to see what is new these many years after her death. The author had a connection with Laura same as me. Most of the material I had read before but the political slant was new. The author or editor needs to remove some of the repetitions.

An interesting book, but I felt the author's analysis was a little weak and not always well-supported. I didn't come away truly feeling strongly either way about the Wilder women and how their Libertarian views impacted the Little House books, but I did learn some interesting tidbits about their mother-daughter relationship and about how much involvement Rose Wilder Lane actually had in writing this iconic series.

This book was very informative about Laura and Almanzo Wilder and their daughter Rose Wilder Lane. I enjoyed learning about Rose's independent spirit. I also enjoyed hearing about the revising of the stories Laura wrote to make the Little House series more suited to children.It was an excellent read.

The author sheds a lot of light on the story behind the Little House on the Prairie series. Absorbing read.

If you want to get off the beaten track, this will inspire you to see some of the natural beauty of Tuscany. I bought this for friends about to go to Tuscany, but it made me want to go (as if I really needed any prodding). I hope to "borrow it back" for a future trip to Italy.

Enjoyed the book. Gave us a great hike in the Cinque Terre.

This is the best hiking book I have ever read. It is very user-friendly. Just about any question I might have has been anticipated. The book is arranged in a very concise orderly fashion. I will recommend it to my hiking friends. I look foward to purchasin books this author may write in the future.

5 days of hiking and 50 miles. Great book! The Italian Hiking Club has a great job of marking trails, but this guide gives you some great suggestions.

Very interesting, complete and concise. Great directions, tips and insight males this a great guide book.

This book has everything, directions for the crazy Italian roads, detailed trail descriptions, but the information on the ecology, geology, and history of the region was what really put this over the top. Not sure why more people haven't discovered it, but made my trip!

This is a very useful guide. We got 4 different guides, and although some of the others had birds, this one had more birds and different birds to identify. It is small enough to carry on hikes, laminated for durability, and just great to have.

This was the perfect size for a daypack pocket and was useful on our treks. It was easy to identify the many birds we saw. We left ours with our local guide who was amazed by it as he lives in the jungle and had never seen such a thing (!).

Small lightweight, easy to pack if you need a quick reference guide and because it’s laminated easy to keep clean.

My older daughter loved this book but 2yrs later we couldn't find it and ordered another book for my younger child from Amazon for a class assignment and were very disappointed. While in Flint, MI for a time, character, Deza realizes that she gets a C+ for her paper not because she did badly, but because the teacher does not give grades higher than a C to a black child.I was intrigued that the history and portrayal of the Smelling vs. Lewis boxing fight. My in-laws were married on June 19, 1936 and they often spoke of this fight. I enjoyed the background history of the fight in the back of the book.This book is a true picture of the plight during the Great Depression yet the message was strong that no matter what, family stays together even if Jimmie is absent from the fold.This book is a must for purchase during 2012 and a great contribution to a church library.

Each year, I read a novel to my children (in order to address a wide age range). This is another excellent addition to my children's library! The book gives an accurate description of the experience of many Black American families in the Depression era. Christopher Paul Curtis tells the story convincingly from the perspective of a 10-year-old girl. Excellent! We quote the book often. Read it; be sensitive to it; laugh often; be more enriched.

Loved this book, even though it is considered a children's book. Great story and true to the era of the great depression. Mr. Curtis has a wonderful way of painting pictures with his words!
