Review

Readers will be shocked by the brutality (Sabine) encounters during this little-known historical episode. (Kirkus Reviews 2008-01-15)A gripping story of a remarkable teen who helps her family face impossible loss. (Booklist 2008-06-01)A fascinating coming-of-age story...Nanji does not end the book as a tragedy, but with a feeling of hope. As Sabine and heryounger brother sit on a plane on their way to Canada, Sabine makes a plan: "The best way to avenge the injustice, she decided, would be to live well and be happy." "The refugees came with just their shirts on their backs," Nanji points out. "Hey, we are resilient."...Told in a steady, rhythmic tone that initially belies the horror - and then makes it seem all the worse - Child of Dandelions is beautifully written. It evokes the terror and disbelief of the time. It reveals the strengths and shames of a culture that crashed from privilege to devastation in three short months. (Desi Life Magazine 2008-12-11)A gripping narrative that immerses readers in Sabine's thoughts so that they intimately experience her loss of naivety. (CM Magazine 2008-12-01)This is such a complex subject for young people, yet you do such a clear, concise job of making the issues understandable for your audience...The way you paced the novel, readers are putting together the facts along with Sabine—witnessing the shantytowns where generations of Ugandans had lived, discovering the warehouse filled with bodies... One of the novel’s great moments is when Sabine realizes that Zena must have been working behind the scenes to help her family. (School Library Journal 2008-04-10)A stirring coming-of-age novel. (Quill & Quire 2008-12-01)This is a revealing story about the devastation that occurred during the dictatorship of Idi Amin and the resulting political upheaval...This book screams the question: “Does history repeat itself?” There are so many parallels to the Holocaust, they are impossible to ignore. There are references to the Jewish plight in the book, which should prompt some emotional discussion among students who have been exposed to the dark events of the Holocaust. They won’t be able to help but ask themselves how these events could have happened in Uganda only three decades later... Female Intermediate students are especially likely to identify with the main character, Sabine, who is of South Asian descent...I feel a rating of 4 stars is warranted. (EFTO VOICE 2009-10-01)Readers are not only invited to experience the vivid sights of Kampala in the early 1970s, and to experience it as home for Sabine, but also to follow her through the ordeal of sudden displacement based on ethnic and class conflicts...a story that delves into the consequences of sudden cultural displacement that many Canadians experience prior to their arrival in this country. (Jeunesse: Young People, Texts, Cultures 2010-06-01)As I do for all books that concern other cultures/countries than our own, curious reader, I highly recommend this for your next read. Though carry a packet of tissues when you do. (Seattlepi 2012-07-29)

This was a remarkable book, a fine look into the political hell inflicted on Ugandan's Indian citizen and non-citizens during Idi Amin's reign of terror. The author is very objective and writes very well. The customs of the Ugandan society and the India society are well presented.

I have been for the last 10-11 years part of a wonderful Book Club. We call ourselves "The Book Gems". Over the years we have read the finest literature ever. We are a very close knit group of very intelligent, passionate, knowledgable and sensitive ladies. Many times we touched on my history and how my family had ended up in Britain from Uganda. So when it came to my turn I researched and found that there were not many books written about Uganda and the experiences of what the foreign Indians went through at the hand of Dada Idi Amin. This is part of history that not many people around the world know about. I was born in Jinja Uganda in 1966 and just 6 years later President Dada Idi Amin ordered an expulsion of all Foreign Indians and he imposed the 90 day count-down. This is my history and part of my life that has been deeply engraved in my memory. Reading Child of Dandelions really bought back the reality of what had gone on during this period. I loved the book because of that. It finally allowed me to let "The Book Gems". to feel for themselves the actual truth, the fear and sacrifies my family and other indian families had to make. It is a must read for all to find the terror and the truth about Uganda and Dada Ide Amin. I also choose The Shattered Pearl by Sara Armstrong to read along side Child of Dandelions both are easy reads but the knowledge acquired is of any history lecture given on Uganda. I loved both books. Greatly written and a very compelling story.

I enjoyed the book as I had a similar background and was curious about reading someone's experience on the topic. I was younger than her at the time so it was interesting for me to see what it was like for my older cousins during Amin's deportation.

I think I had heard somewhere before about the expulsion of Indians from Uganda, but beyond a vague recollection I knew nothing about it. Nanji has done teenagers a service with this novel, which tells the story of an episode in recent African history that's been all but forgotten in the West. Idi Amin came out against the wealthy Indian minority in Uganda and gave the entire population ninety days to get out of the country or die. Sabine's family believes the order doesn't apply to them because they are Ugandan citizens who have been living in Africa for generations, but they quickly learn that such niceties mean little to the dictator and his henchmen.Nanji resists the temptation to turn the characters into stereotypes; there are no all evil or all good people in this novel, but you see shades of gray in each one: Sabine's racist but kind family friend. Sabine's family's loyal African servant, who thinks of her family as his own. Sabine's African best friend who worships Idi Amin and agrees that, for the good of Uganda, the Indians must go. Her friend's uncle who is one of those abusing the Indians but protects Sabine's family at risk to himself. Sabine's grandfather, who's carrying a secret. Occasional phrases in African and Indian languages are sprinkled throughout and add authenticity without being distracting. This story is taut and suspenseful. As the countdown continues and the tensions escalate, readers will keenly feel Sabine's fear and uncertainty. A fine work; I would recommend it, and read this author again.

Child of Dandelions is a heart-rending story of Sabine - a teenager living in Uganda. Nanji's storytelling is pure and Sabine's (mis)adventure is full of the sights and sounds of Uganda in the 1970s when Idi Amin ordered the expulsion of some 80,000 Indians.Nanji - a children's book author has made an impressive debut into the Young Adult genre with her new book!

Idi Amin's reign of terror in Uganda included the ethnic cleansing of Uganda's Indian minorities. This book, from the perspective of a young girl, a Ugandan citizen but born to a family of successful Muslim Indian businesspeople, showcases the first tendency of socialists: DIVIDE AND ATTACK. Idi Amin singled out the talented and successful people in Uganda for elimination, gave them fair warning: 90 days until the exterminations begin, but then jumped the gun and started the political killings early.Sabine, the hero of this story, watches as her culture, friendships, and family are swept away by the evil of socialism. Watches as her girlhood friend is turned into a child prostitute for the President. Watches as her family is blamed for their successes and resilience by scummy soldiers motivated by greed.Sabine develops a "blame the victim" mindset: "Aunty, it is our fault. We took advantage of them..." p. 180. Understandable in the character, but false.Parents should be aware that Sabine travels to a cold-storage warehouse where the mutilated bodies of tortured political prisoners wait to be identified and dumped into the crcodile-infested lake for disposal. She sees the maimed corpses, and so does the reader. Various types of torture-killings are described with friendly names: "helicopter treatment," "hammer treatment," etc. Also, Sabine barely escapes being raped by a soldier as she tries to get her paperwork to flee the regime. Lower age limit of 14, is my recommendation.

If you’ve been paying attention, you can’t have missed the changes in the character of advertising over the course of your life. Certainly, I have. Chances are, you were born in the age of radio, at the earliest. If so, you’ve witnessed a string of new technologies enter the realm of news and entertainment, almost always paired with aggressive advertising sooner or later: network television, cable TV, the personal computer, the Internet, and the smartphone. In his insightful history of the business of advertising, Columbia University law professor Tim Wu casts a wider net. Beginning with the advent of the penny press in the 1830s, he explores in telling detail the now centuries-long battle between the commercial interests who want to seize our attention for their own ends and the individuals who want to keep our lives private and access news, information, and entertainment without distraction. This is a colorful story, and Wu tells it well.Though Wu opens with the introduction of the Sun in New York in 1833, his history more properly begins much later in the 19th century with the emergence of the advertising industry to sell Snake Oil and other patent medicines. (Yes, Snake Oil Liniment was actually a widely sold product Good for Man and Beast.) “From the 1890s thr0ugh the 1920s,” he writes, “there arose the first means for harvesting attention on a mass scale and directing it for commercial effect . . . [A]dvertising was the conversion engine that, with astonishing efficiency, turned the cash crop of attention into an industrial commodity.”The penny press, Amos ‘n Andy, and pop-up adsBeginning in the early years of the 20th century, Wu frames his story around the development of radio and the four “screens” that have dominated our attention over the decades that followed: the “silver” screen (film), television, the personal computer, and the smartphone. The author relates the history of each of these technologies as a human story, describing the often outrageous personalities who pioneered and dominated each of these media in turn. However, in focusing on radio and the four screens, Wu overlooks the billboards that mar every urban line of sight and barely mentions the direct mail that floods our mailboxes. Though less than comprehensive, his historical account is engrossing and enlightening. Here you’ll learn about the development of propaganda by the British government in World War I and its perfection by Nazi Germany . . . the first radio serial that was a smash hit (the grossly racist “Amos ‘n Andy“) in the 1920s . . . the invention of the soap opera in the 1930s . . . the battle between the networks on radio and later on TV from the 1930s through the 1990s . . . the development of geodemographic targeting for ads in the 1970s . . . the emergence of celebrity culture in the 1980s and its perversion by reality television in the 2000s . . . the wild proliferation of blogging in the 2000s . . . the identity theft committed by Google and Facebook in the 2000s and beyond . . . and, finally, “unplugging” and the emergence of free online streaming services like Netflix in the 2010s. This is not a pretty story.A harsh judgmentThe author is not a fan of the “new media” that have come to hold our attention in recent years. “The idealists had hoped the web would be different,” he notes, “and it certainly was for a time, but over the long term it would become something of a 99-cent store, if not an outright cesspool.” Similarly, Wu’s judgment about the advertising industry is harsh. “[U]nder competition, the race will naturally run to the bottom; attention will almost invariably gravitate to the more garish, lurid, outrageous alternative . . .” It’s difficult to find fault with any of this.About the authorHe’s the man who coined the term “network neutrality.” A specialist in media and technology, Tim Wu has written several books and numerous articles, all nonfiction. His work has influenced the development of national media policy under the Obama Administration.

Writing histories of soft power – advertising, entertainment, persuasion, etc – has its difficulties. The historians of the hard variety of power can attach their arguments to a battle won, a piece of legislation passed, an election lost, something concrete where impact and significance seem clearer, more obvious. Yet the exercise of soft power is both commonplace and important because it often does shape our lives in a myriad of ways. But how do you prove such claims?Well Tim Wu has done a masterful job of tracking the story of a changing group of people, mostly men, who have sort to harvest the attention of publics and then sell that attention to a bevy of clients, mostly advertisers of one kind or another. The overall story isn’t new: there have been many fine histories of advertising over the years, and of its effect on culture and consumers. But Wu adds to the chronicle by focusing much of his argument on the modern incarnation of the attention merchants, no longer just newspaper publishers or admen or broadcast moguls but the ones who run the massively popular websites, say a Mark Zuckerberg, that wins our attention by offering an appealing service, a lot of supposedly ‘free stuff.’ Except of course it isn’t quite free, or rather it produces a saleable product, our eyes, that can generate huge profits. And the success of such enterprise shapes the whole character of the internet, just like the fact of advertising shaped first newspapers, then radio, and finally television news and entertainment. It’s the details of the story that especially intrigue. Thus I was taken by his bio of someone he calls the alchemist, Claude Hopkins, an adman early in the 20th century, whose successes and views had a major impact on the course of marketing throughout the next few decades. Wu has obviously done much research and thought hard about his findings. He writes well, very well indeed: the story flows easily, the arguments are clear, and his claims are always interesting, even if you might doubt his conclusions. So his suggestion a consumer revolt is brewing nowadays I liked, and hope he’s correct, but I doubt – there have been too many such claims in times past but we still live in marketing’s moment. Things change yes, styles of persuasion get updated, but the rule of the persuader persists: so the political consultant may have suffered some hard times in the past election cycle (because so many expensive campaigns failed abysmally), but the triumph of Trump (who doesn’t figure in the book) shows the huckster remains a potent figure in the American mix.The characters I found most intriguing here, like Hopkins, weren’t just selling our attention but manufacturing attraction, making products or people or causes appealing to the various markets and publics. Because in part our attention to the free stuff doesn’t mean our submission to the wishes of the elites. There’s another step, namely the crafting of the brand or the cause, making something that captivates or, apparently, fills a need. In short the real exercise of soft power came through the efforts of the adman, although now more the ad-maker and public relations counsel, what’s been called the persuasion industry. Sometimes I had the feeling Wu’s approach emphasized attention too much, attraction too little. But the real point is that Wu’s book provokes thought about a brand of soft power that is both ubiquitous and compelling. The only answer, unfortunately inadequate I think, is to get off the grid – don’t Facebook, don’t tweet, don’t watch television, then you can’t be sold. Except, of course, you then miss out on the free stuff.

A good history on advertising, and well written. However, a majority of the content is on the 19th century and first 3 quarters of the 20th.The content on modern advertising (google, facebook, etc) is comparatively short and lacking exhibits. Isn't this why we bought the book, for insights into digital attention harvesting? This reader was left wanting for more examples and greater depth.Still contains valuable insight, and an entertaining read.

This was an excellent history of the advertising industry, with lots of thought-provoking historical analogs and anecdotes. It's a good follow-up to Tim Wu's earlier book, The Master Switch, that focuses on technology monopolies. The basic thrust of the book is that ever since the days of the earliest printing presses, there was a realization that the real money to be made from content was around harvesting "user attention". Through the 1800s and 1900s, the exact mechanisms used to harvest attention (newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television stations, and, eventually, the Internet) may have changed, the industry was always driven by the lucrative delivery of some percentage of some audience's time for commercial messages. The end of the book is, predictably, where the anecdotes become weaker and less interesting, as we transition to discussions of attention harvest and sale at companies like BuzzFeed and Facebook which are all very well covered by the popular press, at this point. But luckily the meat of the book is the (lesser known) history, and that's the portion I found most fascinating.

I just closed this book and I felt the need to immediately review it. As a student microbiologist, chemist, and current medical worker, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Dr. Blaser lays out the complexity and wonder of the microscopic world in a way that's fathomable to a general audience. He approaches the dense subject matter of the (human) microbiome in a gentle, laid back yet informative manner, making this book a relatively simple read for even those with little to no scientific background. I will be recommending this book to everyone I know, especially those working in the medical, or any science driven, field (as well as any politician I may come across, ha!) Even if you know nothing about microbiology, and your last science class was in high school, I urge you to read this informative masterpiece. I cannot overstate the urgency of this topic, and I believe this book can provide anyone with a perfect segue into the crisis of the overuse of antibiotics (or the rise of "superbugs", if that catches your attention more.)This is now one of my favorite books! Give it a try!

This book has good chapters on various aspects of gut biome issues and antibiotics. The author gives clear explanations and has extensive expertise in the field. One thing that is slightly misleading, though the major issues are covered in a general manner a lot of the specifics are focussed on Helicobacter Pylori, which is a stomach centered bacteria rather than something from lower down. I was expecting more coverage of the range of bacteria in the intestinal biome. This in no way detracts from the quality of the book as a some of the issues with H. Pylori seems to be those of the general intestinal biome also.Overall there is quite a wide and big picture view as well as the focus on H Pylori case studies. For example the author mentions work on Caesarian birth innoculation and other clean hypothesis issues. The case studies themselves are presented in a good scientific manner with descriptions of the protocols and evidence for the findings. Also this book made me want to go work with Dr. Blaser on studies like the one he described. Important work.

I won't describe the contents because you can get that from other reviews, and from the books title.I recommend this book because it alerts us to an impending world-wide evolutionary threat to human life. Actually, impending isn't the right word because the antibiotic resistance crisis is already here.Unfortunately doctors and health professionals in general don't - or can't - do much to inform their patients about this. We as healthcare consumers are still trapped in a vicious cycle of antibiotic overuse, followed by unintended health consequences, followed by treatment for the unintended consequences....this has to stop. That will only happen when an informed public demands it.Please read the book! It is highly readable, with excellent insights into how the research process works, based on the author's own long experience.

I just finished reading it once and started reading again, it's that important. Should be required reading at every university, across the world.I've been studying about the human microbiome for the last 3 years. Martin Blaser's book is critically important to worldwide health. Educate your congressmen, educate the public, educate our health care professionals, we can't continue to keep making the mistakes that we have been making.Funding to unlock the secrets of how to restore diversity of this ecosystem we carry should be increased a thousand percent, it's that critical for restoring health, worldwide. And for God's sake we have to stop the barbaric practice of feeding antibiotics to our livestock as growth enhancers.

Like most well-read denizens of the internet's scientific literature, I was aware that there was something going on with the microbes that live in our gut. I couldn't have fathomed the associations that actually exist, or the depth of them. To the credit of the author, Dr. Blaser doesn't make concrete claims in the absence of evidence, but doesn't mince words about links that warrant further investigation. As a study of microbiology, I would suggest this book to any first or second year students going into medical laboratory science as inspiring and eye-opening toward the next decade in medicine. This was an enlightening view

This is a great book, taking readers into the cool new science of the microbiome. I liked the first-hand accounts Blaser gives of his research, especially how he starts the book with describing Helicobacter pylori and other scientists' assumptions that this was always a "bad" microbe. I think he's taken some flak for his hypothesis that antibiotics lies at the root of many chronic and autoimmune conditions, but it's certainly reasonable to think that exterminating the bacterial communities (and others) indigenous to our bodies will have an effect, and probably not a good one. I liked how he explained the basic differences between viruses and bacteria and why an antibiotic effective against bacteria can't do squat to get rid of a virus. The latter half of the book, in which Blaser shares his research on H. pylori is particularly intriguing. This bacterium might be good for us early in life, but not so good as we move into adulthood (it puts a person at risk of stomach cancer). A really good overview of the human microbiome well worth your time.

Fantastic book by a microbiologist with 30 years of researching various common diseases, like allergies, various cancers, arthritis, and even overweight population. Fascinating attribution of MANY conditions to overuse of antibiotics, thus the Missing Microbes. An easy read for me, and I am convinced. :) But I'm darn scared too!

Beware of the test bank for this book. Many of the questions come from different chapters. Test questions are not covered in the chapter and many questions concerning drugs that are referenced no where. This is a well written book with a lot of great information. Too bad the test bank questions seem to come from a different edition. I can't wait to set this book on fire.

I bought this book for Level 2 nursing classes that have not started yet. It has been a great help with Level 1 as well. It breaks everything down for you. It has been great for working on my drug cards as well. Nursing students can not go wrong buying this book even for level one meds. I am very happy I decided to buy while still in level 1.

Not bad for a pharmacology book. Of course, how interesting is Pharm really going to be? But in general it is easy to read and understand and breaks things down pretty well. I would have given it 5 stars, but I just don't like pharmacology. But I have to say that the seller got it to me quickly in pristine condition.

I am using this product for my LPN program. I am please that the book was packaged so nicely with a receipt and instructions on how to return the item. I also did not aspect that there will be a atlas to the medication instructions in it. Thank you so much to the seller...

Matched amd followed the textbook perfectly. Great for studying.

It was in kind of rough shape. From now on I will just buy my books. Some of the pages were sticky which is just a little disturbing and the writing and highlighting done by previous users is distracting.

Ok- first off... I really did enjoy this book. However, now that I have all 4 of Brown's novels, I have noticed a certain formula that Dan Brown uses.1- Use the word "Incredulous" as often as possible (although he kept the word to a minimum in "Digital Fortress" less than 10 occurrences).2- The bad guy MUST be known by a term/phrase instead of a name (here he is known as "North Dakota").3- The bad guy is double crossing the good guys... and you are NOT supposed to suspect this.4- The novel must take place in the course of one day.5- Your hero must wake-up and not have a clue that he will spend his entire day many miles away from home, while being chased by bad guys.6- All good guys must be experts at something very arcane.7- The ending must be weak.If you follow these steps you too can write a Dan Brown novel. ORRRR you can use this formula to figure out the book you are currently reading after about 100 pages. Of course, tweaks the formula for each of his books. However, "Digital Fortress" is clearly the little brother of all Brown's books. The plot is interesting and while the it certainly is a "Page Turner" you notice pretty quickly that everything doesn't quite add up. Like when the deaf guy notices all of the people entering the street because he HEARS a bell being rung. As others have pointed out, Brown has taken quite a few liberties with computer programming. Even though it took me two tries to get through FORTRAN, I had very little trouble figuring out a few of the mistakes. For the most part I enjoyed the novel. Since I know the Brown "Formula" it didn't take me very long to predict EXACTLY what would happen... but hey, sometimes a little predictability is ok!

"Digital Fortress" is a debut novel from Dan Brown published in 1998. It is a high tech thriller type novel with two primary settings, NSA headquarters in Maryland and Seville Spain. The chapters shift back and forth, sometimes rapidly. The narrative style is modern and popular and thus provides a fairly easy read. The book proved to be, at times, a true "page turner". Personally, for me, there were times that I wanted to know what happened next, only to have the scene shift away from the action, leaving the reader on hold. When I say the action shifts, at times, rapidly, my copy, which I purchased on Kindle has 128 chapters in 371 pages. For me this made it easy to read a chapter during a quick break. However towards the end, chapters were often changing after one page, for no obvious reason. It was no big deal, it just seemed slightly strange to me. But I did really like the novel. As is often the case, I learned a good deal from a work of fiction such as this. I has occurred to me that I have a lack of knowledge of Spain. I enjoyed reading about Seville and reading other information about Seville on my own.On the other hand, the other setting is NEA headquarters in Maryland. In the novel, there is a collection of very brilliant people seemingly stumped by some fairly basic anagrams, epigrams, and scientific puzzles. For personal reasons, I do not wish to disclose I found some of those clues more cute than clever and would not have stumped such a collection of analysts for more than a few seconds, if at all. Some individual's minds operate in certain ways, and that is just how it is, and certain logical leaps are made almost involuntarily. Again, that is not to say this is still an enjoyable reading experience. In summary, I liked this novel very much. It was not the huge success that some of Dan Brown's following novels proved to be. While I can appreciate why that is, I liked this novel and am very glad I had the chance to read it. Thank You...

Not that Dan Brown needs any reviews to boost his sales, but while I've only seen the movies for his other popular books (vice reading them), a friend loaned me his copy of this book years ago insisting that I would like it because it had a female heroin in it. I trusted my friend, not because of the female heroin part, but because he knew me well--I'm so glad I did. I seriously only like reading when I'm going to learn something or for a purpose but not really for entertainment. I hadn't read a book for entertainment in so long that my teenage kid at that time (years ago) was so shocked at seeing me read, he assumed I had to be asleep as I was engrossed in this book. I couldn't put this book down--from start to finish. I keep hoping they'll come out with the movie version as I'd love to see that movie and honestly believe it will be better than any of Dan Brown's previous movies based on one character. Don't hesitate to buy or go find this at a library or wherever, but do read this book. I had to return my copy to my friend; however, I decided to buy it now that I'm retired and re-read it with all this time on my hands.

Early Dan Brown, before Robert Langdon, and nearly as good. The main characters in this book are David Becker, professor of foreign language at Georgetown University (model for Robert Langdon?), and Susan Fletcher, brilliant and beautiful head cryptographer at the NSA and fiancé of David. The plot revolves around a presumably unbreakable code that was going to be released to the public free of charge, essentially putting the National Security Agency out of business as any message could be sent in the open without fear of being translated. David Becker goes to Seville, Spain, to try and track down the man who wrote the code to find the kill phrase while Susan works at her end to try and break the copy of the code the NSA received. This book has the same action, tension, history, geography and architecture and plot twists as I have come to expect (and enjoy) from Dan Brown. Also, there is just enough about cryptography to satisfy a math geek like me. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!(
