From the Inside Flap

From the revered author of the classic The Death and Life of Great American Cities comes a new book that will revolutionize the way we think about the economy. Starting from the premise that human beings "exist wholly within nature as part of natural order in every respect," Jane Jacobs has focused her singular eye on the natural world in order to discover the fundamental models for a vibrant economy. The lessons she discloses come from fields as diverse as ecology, evolution, and cell biology. Written in the form of a Platonic dialogue among five fictional characters, "The Nature of Economies is as astonishingly accessible and clear as it is irrepressibly brilliant and wise-a groundbreaking yet humane study destined to become another world-altering classic.

It is no accident that Toronto is often rated as one of the most livable cities in North America -- Jane Jacobs lives there, and she takes an active role in helping shape her adopted city. She also does something original; she actively examines the topics she writes about, instead of relying upon the mere observations of others. When you use a chunk of granite, a bar of steel or the speed of light, it's worth knowing that inanimate objects don't change much. But, Jacobs and all other social scientists deal with people; and people are continually changing. One of her central themes is that since Adam Smith in 1776, economists have tended to ignore the real world. "Smith himself was partly responsible for that blind spot," Jacobs writes. "He led himself and others astray by declaring that economic specialization of regions and nations was more efficient than economic diversification. "The theorists after Smith retreated into their own heads instead of engaging ever more deeply with the real world," Jacobs writes. "Plenty of observable, germane facts were lying around in plain sight, ready and waiting to lead Smith's insights, straight as directional arrows, into the subjects of development and bifurcations." Adam Smith overturned centuries of thinking when he wrote, "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard for their own interest." Until then, there was a general feeling that God, or Nature, or other supernatural force provided our sustenance; Smith said personal interest is the key to economic life. Smith takes that idea the next step: Yes, natural products exist, but we can wipe them out by overuse. Every system in nature is harmed by over-indulgence; nothing can be exploited without some collateral cost. Excess carries the seeds of its own destruction; humans are a part of nature, and thus subject to similar limitations. Thus, the book's title -- "The Nature of Economies." Every society is a part of nature; people are always subject to the inevitable laws of nature. This isn't tree-hugging ecology or a `Save a Whale for Jesus' fad; it's the fundamental rules by which nature, and thus our communities, live on a day-to-day basis. Consider a real example: Phoenix literally "paves the desert." Twenty years ago, climatologists knew this raised night temperatures, because asphalt soaks up heat during the day and radiates at night. Night temperatures have risen by almost 10 degrees -- which adds immensely to air conditioning bills, and greatly reduces livability. Yet, city officials steadfastly ignore this feedback to pursue a policy of unlimited growth. Is this unusual? Think of Los Angeles traffic, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, El Paso, and Tucson -- each with its own growing problems. Jacobs argues the "nature of economies" means being aware of feedback, and facing issues before they become a crisis. Despite her living in Toronto, do Canadians do it? No, Canadians ignored overfishing of the Grand Banks -- once the richest fishing area in the world -- until the area was fished out which caused the economy of Newfoundland to collapse. In brief, that's her lesson. Ignore feedback, ignore the evidence in front of our eyes, and we'll have economic and social collapse. Nature never offers "Get out of Jail Free" cards. Unlike many ecologists, Jacobs doesn't offer simplistic "get rid of the automobile" solutions. She says problems will arise whatever we do; the solution is in recognizing the feedback, then responding to the problem. In other words, "Look around." Then ask, "What can we do different?" She doesn't offer solutions; she offers thought processes to enable intelligent people to find solutions. Does she have a valid point? Well, Toronto officials listen to her, and have one of the best cities in North America. It's time her audience was expanded.

She was not an economist, developer, architect, city planner, or politician, but she was skillful in combining all of this drawing conclusions in this book.

This is the second work I have read by Jane Jacobs (the first being her widely and well-known Death and Life of Great American Cities) and it reinforces my notion that during her life she authored a sparkling well of common sense from which every individual should draw deeply.

Jane Jacobs is a bit like Agatha Christie. A no nonsense view of economics and the city as an economic engine. I do sometimes wish she would look a little deeper into the policies she references.

Although I have the deepest admiration for Jane Jacobs, a national treasure (of two countries!) and the author of an all-time classic book -- "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" -- I have to say that I found "The Nature of Economies" to be a real mixed bag...actually kind of a letdown.First, I have to agree with other reviewers who found the "dialogue" in this book to be almost laughably bad. I mean, obviously no human being would possibly speak this way ("in sum," "to repeat," "to be sure") with friends -- or anyone else, I would hope! Second, the whole Socratic dialogue, pedantic monologue format here can get very tiresome at times. In fact, it's so bad that even its own characters keep nodding off! Third, most of these ideas, although interesting, are nothing original (as Jacobs' extensive endnotes prove), although obviously Jacobs has done a great deal of reading, and has synthesized or at least summarized other peoples' ideas fairly well, and that is nothing to sneeze at. Fourth, and more problematic in my opinion, is the high degree of abstraction, and apparent lack of practical utility, with much of Jacobs' ideas. I mean, it's fascinating and all that human economies are part of nature, but what are the real-life policy implications here? OK, so central planning is bad, but does that mean that Jacobs is in favor of an extreme laissez-faire capitalist approach by government? (I doubt it) Is Jacobs so optimistic to believe that if we just let things run their natural course, that everything will just all work out for the best? If she does believe this, is it naiveté or brilliance? Or is this just a bunch of Panglossian nonsense? After reading this book, I have to say that in many ways I have no idea exactly WHAT Jacobs is getting at here. Worst of all, "The Nature of Economies" begs the most important question, namely, WHAT ARE ECONOMIES FOR (Jacobs' unsatisfying answer - economies are for everything and everybody...huh?!?)?Having said all of this, I still think the book is worth reading, mainly because it is filled with interesting, thought-provoking ideas - whoever came up with them - two of the biggest ones being that humans (and their economies) are part of nature, and that the more they "biomimic" (imitate nature) the better off we will all be. Of course, the counterargument to mimicking nature is that nature isn't just a bed of roses, so to speak! As the curmudgeon character Armbruster puts it, all this happy talk of "cooperation, symbiosis, interdependence" seems to ignore the fact that nature is very much "red in tooth and claw." Instead, it ends up sounding "like a barn raising," not the nasty survival of the fittest ("and the devil take the hindmost" in Armbrusters' words) that is part and parcel of nature, as much as we try to romanticize or ignore it. I DO very much like Jacob's emphasis on the benefits of a complex web of interrelationships, and also on the importance of working ALONG with natural principles, not against them. In general, Jacobs' view that life at its best is a hustling beehive (or tropical rainforest) of activity and diversity, as in the crooked streets and serendipitous mixings of a thriving city, is strong and positive. I also agree with her that non-serendipitous, sterile suburbia, with its de facto separation of different kinds of people - rich/ poor, white/black/hispanic, gay/straight, etc. (see the 2000 US Census for proof of this), its often de jure separation of commercial (and cultural) activities from residential areas, and its monocultures of identical houses in subdivisions surround by wide, fast, straight roads (which serve to reduce pedestrian traffic, force utter dependence on automobiles, and prevent healthy development of community), is not good at all, and simply maintained by massive government subsidies (of roads, gasoline, utilities, etc.).So, the bottom line is that - even in her 80s -- Jane Jacobs still has a lot to say and contribute, even though she said it far better 40 years ago. So, sure, read "The Nature of Economies," but even better, go back and read (or reread) the Jacobs' classic work - "The Death and Life of Great American Cities!"

Review

“Excellent. . . . Frampton excels is in his sharply intelligent and sharply phrased insights. . . . An elegant work.” —The Washington Post “Winning. . . . Perceptive. . . . Frampton tells the story of how history, culture, and personal genius conspired to create a new literary genre—and a literary master for the ages.” —The Christian Science Monitor“An inventive exploration. . . . [This book] attests to the enduring fascination of Montaigne’s pieces: The sensibility behind them is at once centuries old and curiously modern.” —Slate “There can be no better introduction to Montaigne.” —The Washington Times“Although they were first published more than four centuries ago, Montaigne’s essays can seem as topical as the morning newspaper. As more than one admirer has discovered, Montaigne’s essential gift—the art of conversation rendered on the page—is a timeless one.” —The Christian Science Monitor “Montaigne’s essays delight in human sensuality, uniqueness, even unpredictability. Though [his] early essays were about war, the later essays are playful, uninhibited, and in parts painfully intimate (sexual dysfunction; the passing of kidney stones, etc.). Frampton, in his lighthearted book, explores the shift in Montaigne’s thinking. . . . [He] shows how Montaigne’s later essays are full of fascination and observation and how he approaches practical issues—his health, his political obligations, his role as a winemaker—with an enviable equanimity.” —Los Angeles Times “Frampton offers a celebration of perhaps the most enjoyable and yet profound of all Renaissance writers, whose essays went on to have a huge impact on figures as diverse as Shakespeare, Emerson and Orson Welles, and whose thoughts, even today, offer a guide and unprecedented insight into the simple matter of being alive.” —The Washington Times “Scholarly, but not pedantic, this is a book to be savored over time. As with Montaigne’s essays, it is one which can be opened and read at any point without interrupting its flow. . . . Frampton’s extensive knowledge of literary history is evident.” —The Post and Courier “With deceptive casualness, Frampton renders a rigorous history of ideas in this engaging account of the life and the work of Michel de Montaigne. . . . His extraordinary achievement is in conveying—and inviting the reader to commune with—Montaigne’s unique sensibility and his take on death, sex, travel, friendship, kidney stones, the human thumb, and above all, ‘the power of the ordinary and the unremarkable, the value of the here-and-now.’ . . . This scholarly romp through the Renaissance is a jewel.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “The skeptical and humane French nobleman has always had his admirers, and Frampton’s learned, subtle, and engaging book shows why.” —Maclean’s “Ingenious. . . . Passionately written and full to bursting with digressions and anecdotes, Frampton’s book does an excellent job of bringing Montaigne and his historical context to life. It is this vivid evocation of the time that emerges as the book’s greatest strength. We see how the philosopher’s celebration of daily life . . . went against not only the dominant philosophical currents of the day but also the violent upheavals of 16th-century France. What comes through the strongest is an inspiring sense of the philosopher’s remarkable independence of thought and enduring relevance.”—The Sunday Times (London) “In Montaigne’s intense self-absorption, Frampton discerns the rich literary fruit of a stunning midlife volte-face. . . . Recognizing the twenty-first century’s own need for advocates of life-affirming tolerance, readers will embrace this insightful portrait.” —Booklist (starred review) “One of the best books I have read on Montaigne. . . . Frampton argues that to read Montaigne is ‘to touch base with oneself’ and to learn how to act within our capacities, to accept and even to savour them. . . . He demonstrates that the more Montaigne observed ordinary life, the more remarkable he found it, and the more he felt impelled to plunge back into its mess. . . . Four centuries on, Montaigne still speaks to us.” —Nicholas Shakespeare, The Daily Telegraph (London) “Frampton’s book stands as a work in its own right and should encourage anyone unfamiliar with Montaigne to read the original.” —The Oxford Times “When I Am Playing With My Cat sends us back to the Essays with both a deepened understanding and a deepened appreciation of the work of this real-life man for all seasons.”  —The Washington Independent Review of Books

I have many books on Montaigne, including his original essays, and so I was delighted to find Saul Frampton's When I Am Playing With My Cat ...Frampton's books is well written and he connects with readers, inviting us to engage with him in reading the book. I had a sense of actually sitting down with Frampton as he talks to me about Montaigne, sharing stories, insights, and the findings of his scholarship.I often pick the book up and read a few pages and continue the imaginary conversation that I have been having with Frampton . . . and with Montaigne, who has been one of my literary companions for many years.

A great book by a solid writer and thinker about a beautiful soul: Michel de Montaigne. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in history, philosophy or writing. Also, it has one of the best titles of any book I have ever read!

An absolute necessity if you are studying or enjoy montaigne.

My title says most of what I want to say: this is a great intro. to Montaigne's thought (and perhaps a little easier than wading into the unabridged Essays) and an inspiration to (1) read Montaigne more closely and (2) think about what it means to be liberal, rational, and civil.

Great

I was a bit disappointed in this book, which is a shame, because it is a fine book that I believe interested readers will enjoy very much if they come with the right expectations.A book's title should give the reader a sense of what the book is going to be about. From the title "When I Am Playing with My Cat, How Do I Know She Is Not Playing with Me? Montaigne and Being in Touch with Life", I anticipated a book focusing on Montaigne's insights into everyday life. Words on the flyleaf talking of Montaigne "finding an antidote to death in the most unlikely places---the touch of a hand, the smell of his doublet, the playfulness of his cat, and the flavor of his wine" and calling him a writer "whose thoughts, even today, offer a guide and unprecedented insight into the simple matter of being alive," strengthened my feeling. In addition, every one of several articles I read about the book mentioned that Montaigne wrote about the human thumb, as a striking example of his interest in the simple things; I rather naturally thought the thumb essay would be discussed at some length. In truth, "Of Thumbs" is cited only once."When I Am Playing with my Cat" is a series of essays, most of which could be read by themselves, and each of which is about a subject of interest to Montaigne. However, rather than focusing narrowly on Montaigne's writings, they provide an intellectual history about Montaigne's influences and the events and thinkers that he, in turn, influenced. We learn Montaigne's thoughts through numerous quotes and citations from the essays, but we also learn about the thinking of people like Epictetus, Cicero, Descartes, and even on to Emerson and Orson Welles. This is not entirely inappropriate, since Montaigne himself cited other thinkers extensively, and Frampton is merely continuing the practice. Frampton does a good job of describing Montaigne's life and the era in which he lived and how these experiences and events shaped his beliefs. The late 16th century was an exciting time as medieval Christianity gradually lost its pervasive influence and the age of science began to flower, and Montaigne's thoughts show his progressive spirit. The subjects of Frampton's essays/chapters are very diverse, including war, friendship, death, sex, and other themes big and small. The title essay is one of the best, and it is typical of the way Frampton puts Montaigne in a broader context. He traces attitudes towards humans and animals from the caves of Lascaux to the medieval belief in Man's divinely ordained pre-eminence in nature's hierarchy to the humanist perspective as shown by Pico della Mirandola and Erasmus to Montaigne's unconventional , for his time, inquisitiveness about the capabilities of other animals. Montaigne believed that perhaps animals seem inferior to us in part because we just don't understand them and, further, that animals can give us insights into ourselves. Much of what he says on this subject seems very modern, and one feels a sense of intellectual kinship across the centuries. One of the great pleasures of "When I Am Playing with my Cat" is Frampton's style. Sentences like "Springing from the flanks of the Puy de Sancy in the mountains of Auvergne, the Drodogne curls intestinally through the broad belly of France" make the poetry of the writing as enjoyable as the content.I was somewhat reluctant to write a review of this book because of my unfulfilled expectations, but when I noticed that no one else has reviewed it I decided to weigh in to encourage others to give it a try. I do not think you will be disappointed.

I agree with other reviewers that the title should be more like a subtitle as I almost missed this in trolling for books to read as I came upon this by searching for books about France in my local library. This is not just a slapdash list of excerpts analyzed in a 21st century light. The chapters are divided sensibly to include direct quotes from relevant essays set against biographical information of Montaigne as well as historical events. This book encourages the reader to delve more deeply into the original essays. I suggest reading each chapter, then pausing to reflect. Keep a pen handy to record some delicious language. Frampton links the etymology of essayer and gouter to the Montaigne's efforts to make the reader taste the language as one would the wine Montaigne produced in his vineyard. I would have enjoyed larger woodcuts, but I read the ebook and maybe the paper version had larger ones.

Excellent. I picked up this book while visiting London, and it became one of the little joys of that trip. Intrigued by the title and the words "being in touch with life" in the title, I enjoyed this introduction to Montaigne. His approach to life and living were welcome thoughts I embraced and soaked up when I read the book in 2011. "Living happily...is the source of human contentment." Also, I found reading about Montaigne's influence on Shakespeare to be enlightening.

What Is the World Series? It was October 1, 1903, and the first World Series game was about to begin. Hours before the game, thousands of fans poured into the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds in Boston. They came by foot, by horse and buggy, and by trolley car.By 2:00 p.m., all nine thousand seats were taken. Seven thousand more fans filed in, sitting on fences and standing behind ropes around the outfield. For this game, admission was double the usual cost: fifty cents for standing room and bleacher seats. One dollar for grandstand seats.Businessmen, students, factory workers. The rich and the poor. Fans from all backgrounds came—with one exception. African Americans were not welcome in the stands or on the field. (In fact, there would be no black players in Major League Baseball until 1947.)At 3:00 p.m., an announcer shouted out the lineup through a megaphone. The game pitted the Boston Americans against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In the first inning, Honus Wagner brought one of his Pirates teammates home with a line-drive single. It was the very first run scored in the very first World Series.Every October, the temperature drops. Leaves fall. Excitement fills the air for baseball fans. It’s time for the World Series—a once-a-year contest between the best of the Major Leagues—to name a championship team. But the World Series is more than a competition. It’s an event with a capital E. During those autumn days, it captures the attention of the entire United States. Presidents throw out first pitches. Popular singers belt out the national anthem. In wartime, in peacetime, in good times and bad, the World Series celebrates a game that has become so popular, it is known as the national pastime.CHAPTER 1 In the BeginningSince the mid-1800s, the game of baseball has been played pretty much the way we know it today. However, until 1869, there were no professional teams with paid players. The Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first pro team. Others followed, and in time the teams joined leagues, which had rules, schedules, and player contracts.

I bought this book as a gift for my nephew, who is a huge baseball fan. He is 9 years old and in 3rd grade. This is a chapter book and is perfect for his reading level.

My 11 year old nephew is hooked on these books. Getting children to read anything is great and these books are great from an informative and enjoyable point of view. Lots of info packed in a manageable size book. Lots of facts and tidbits. Nephew is a huge MLB fan so this was even more enjoyable for him.Great series of books!

An excellent overall introduction to libertarian ideas. Despite what some folks might tell you, libertarian ideas are directly applicable to the complex issues that our society is facing. Boaz, while occasionally a little dry, does an excellent job of explaining libertarian ideas, their development through history and how they can be applied today in our Western society. Maybe you don't agree with libertarianism for one reason or another. This book might or might not persuade you, but don't rely on the oversimplified (and often strawman) arguments you may have heard against libertarianism. Read this book and find out what libertarian ideas actually are and how many libertarians would like to see them applied. If you're already libertarian or leaning libertarian, read this book and get a secure footing in the ideas of liberty and human rights.

David Boaz takes on libertarianism, linking its roots in the earliest thoughts of Lao Tzu, taking it through an investigation of John Locke, Adam Smith, and the Enlightenment and developing the theme of liberty in pretty much every relevant domain of political and social impact. All that being said, this "Manifesto for Freedom" is a primer for freedom. Do not expect in-depth discussions of your favorite libertarians (be it Hayek, Paul or Rand), though expect liberal mentions. All in all, Boaz writes a clear introduction to what should not be radical, but nevertheless is: that liberty is vastly important, unfortunately understated and is the key to prospering, advancing society.

This book is great. I consider my political views "ever-changing" and I have been wanting to explore the philosophy behind libertarianism. This book is a wonderful primer. It explains libertarianism in a simple, straightforward way. The book doesn't pander left, right, up, or down. I consider it to be fair. I would highly recommend.

I think Libertarianism is dedicated to the freedoms guaranteed by the constitution better than either of the two existing US major Political parties. Unless you are eager to learn about a better approach to your political life you may stop reading without acquiring important information

As Libertarianism become more mainstream, anyone interested in American politics owes it to themselves to develop a working knowledge of the real thing rather than the cartoon versions floating around the media. Regardless of whether or not you accept libertarian ideas, at least make an effort to know what it is you embrace or reject. The Libertarian Mind is the best place to start. Cato is the acknowledged center of libertarianism in the US and David Boaz is one of, if not the, leading libertarian scholars writing today. If he cannot explain libertarianism, nobody can. He makes his case well and describes more of a philosophy than a party platform. Although the book may gain some converts to the libertarian cause, it's greater value is that even readers who are less than fully convinced or who remain adamantly opposed, will at least be able to address their arguments to real libertarian ideals rather than the straw men too often put forward by those who do not understand or deliberately misrepresent libertarianism.

This book is a great overview of Libertarianism and how this view improves everyone's lives. Hitting almost every issue and topic you can think of, the author clearly articulated the arguments, logic, pragmatism and benefits of a Libertarian viewpoint of individual liberty and respect for others. Great read, learned a lot, and am now better equipped to defend and advocate for the Liberty movement.

Should be called Mind Blowing instead. Proves there are workable answers to societies' most complex problems while respecting human rights and dignity.

Informative. Clear and important.

From the Back Cover

Praise for TRADE MINDFULLY "This is the best book I have found on the topic of mindfulness as applied to trading. Dr. Gary Dayton explains the problems that typically bedevil traders and draws upon extensive research to illustrate how mindfulness and a process orientation can effectively address these. Altogether a well-written and researched work that bridges theory, research, and practice." —Brett Steenbarger, author of The Daily Trading Coach "Trade Mindfully should be required reading for anyone who ventures into trading. Those traders who seek a better understanding of how the mind subverts their trading results will find this book enlightening." —David H. Weis, Market Analyst "There are times in one's life when you meet a person who is knowledgeable, passionate, and gifted at what they do, and Dr. Gary Dayton is one of those people. I met Gary several years ago at a TradeGuider seminar that he was presenting at, and I was immediately impressed by his immense knowledge of the works and studies of Richard D. Wyckoff. Gary's outstanding book has taken years of knowledge and condensed it into easy to understand material that will greatly assist any trader or investor regardless of their experience level. I highly recommend you study this book with care, and you will know the knowledge that is needed to make it in the markets. Gary is an excellent teacher, but most importantly, he is a real trader who has learned to master the markets, and in this book you have your blueprint for trading success." —Tom Williams, author of Master the Markets and Chairman, TradeGuider Systems International "Technology used to be the 'edge' that separated good traders from bad. Now that nearly every trader has access to the same charts, software, and order types, the real edge separating wealthy traders from failed ones is their mental approach to the markets. Trade Mindfully gives today's trader the tools they need to reach their peak earning potential by showing them how to maximize their profits through psychology. The way a trader 'thinks' about their trading and the markets has never been more important, and Dr. Dayton provides a step-by-step method for mastering the last true 'edge' traders have for making money in the markets." —Tim Bourquin, co-founder, The Traders Expo and TraderInterviews.com "Gary Dayton's captivating book is a trailblazer, fusing the Eastern concept of mindfulness with a psychological model used in professional sports to tame the often unruly emotional world of trading. He explores how mindfulness can conquer emotional demons that derail traders, and offers specific exercises and practices to help the reader take command of their trading. Dayton's keen insights have been featured in the TraderPlanet magazine—he offers significant cutting-edge concepts that are a must-read for any trader looking to take their game to the next level." —Lane J. Mendelsohn, founder and president of Traderplanet.com "This is a very good book. In fact, it is probably the most useful book in the past twenty years—packed full of useful information and activities. It deserves a place on every trader's bookshelf." —Ray Barros, Professional Trader

I have to admit that I was skeptical of several of the reviews before mine. This is a new book, and many of the reviewers only had one review; this book. I was nearly finished with Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow, and I was excited to see that there was a field of psychology called Behavioral Finance (the emotions and thought processes of how we interact with financial decisions and other decision making). Sadly, the author of Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow had no clinical studies on Traders, so I was about to try to translate his research into something worth while for traders, thankfully I found this book just in time! Dr. Gary saved me a lot of work!I think this may be the best trading psychology / trading book I've ever read. That complement is not meant to take anything away from other great authors such as: Van Tharp, Williams, Douglas or J. Rande Howell, this book complements all of their work. The author pulls together material from many different authors and scientific sources, and puts it together in a very comprehensive format. I like that Dr. Gary appreciates the wisdom and experience of trading psychologists that have gone before him, freely giving credit to his sources and case studies so readers know where to look for additional information. Lots of other trading books try to teach you something new, or to educate in one way or another. This book helps to make sense of the entire trading process as seen through our emotions, and teaches how to accept your emotions for the fleeting things that they are, but not get trapped by them.I also highly recommend The Chimp Paradox by Steve Peters. It is not a trading book, but it clearly describes how we are emotional animals, and that the instinctual emotions programmed into our DNA may be beneficial for our survival as individuals and a society, (but if you read between the lines), you will see these same base instincts are responsible for creating self sabotage patterns in all different areas of our lives, and are also responsible for trading disasters as well. Observing and reconditioning our thoughts is the key difference between an average life of struggle, and a life of purposeful achievement with reduced frustration (dare I say joy?). When I read both books during the same time period, my understanding of the mind was greatly expanded.

This book is rather overlooked and underrated. In the trading community there are always the same recommended books that people rave about. This isn’t one of them. My wife wanted to get it for me to help improve my mental state when trading and i was skeptical because nobody else had ever talked about it before. I’m glad my wife got it for me because it’s extremely relevant to how I’m trading now and comes with many tips and exercises to work on your mindfulness. Trading is almost 99% mental once you get everything else down, and this is the hardest part to get right. This book will help you work on your mental mistakes and shortcomings, teach you how to meditate and how to work your way out of a trading slump. Highly recommended if you’ve been holding yourself back from profits ie: cutting trades early, not respecting stops, hesitation jumping in, lack of confidence etc. This book will open your eyes to what you’ve been struggling.

This book is a great guide through some of the parts of human psychology that relate to trading. The author explains such things as loss aversion, fear(s) in trading, and what I found to be very helpful is what the author refers to as "fusion". Fusion is how we get hijacked by our thoughts and are diverted away from the ability to trade profitably. The author not only explains the emotional difficulty we all go through as traders, he has methods for working with our emotions too. He teaches the reader that emotions can't be eliminated, but by using "mindfulness", a kind of personal awareness that is similar to meditation, a trader can de-fuse from our hijacking thoughts and stay focused on the trade. By de-fusing from the thoughts we in effect de-fuse from the emotion too. "Trade Mindfully" is well worth the price and there is much more on the authors website. Highly recommended.

This book is very overrated. It doesn't really offer much new in the realm of trading psychology. It also doesn't effectively summarize the critical parts. Book is also crazy repetitive. The author may disagree here but it's because his approach is very theoretical, where so called distinctions, if any, are drawn over minuscule matters. Just think about it for a second, Do you really need a dense 280 page book to tell you how to trade mindfully?. The author lost a chance to offer a practical blue collar guide that is implementable. Instead, the book is written to impress the authors colleagues. It is not written for you. Another criticism I have of the authors style is that it's very dry, boring and repetitive. He also insists on using the female pronoun in his examples which I am having a tough time connecting with as they interpret flow and coherence. I am sure all of the 5 women who trade in the world are happy about this but with a readership base that is 95% men it seemed like you went out of your way to be less coherent and have diverged from a tradition by other prominent trading psychologists unnecessarily.I don't recommend this book. I started by wanting to give it two stars which I then turned into one star because I couldn't think of anything that I learnt from this book. Drop this book and pick up Trading in the Zone by the master Mark Douglas or TraderMind by Steve Ward. Both have a hands on approach since they have physically helped numerous traders in one-on-one sessions. Ignore this book and don't buy into the hype and the rating it has.
