Born in Brooklyn in 1934, Diane di Prima emerged as a member of the Beat Generation in New York in the late ’50s; in the early ’60s, she founded the important mimeo magazine, The Floating Bear, with LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka). About the Author

Lindy Ryan is passionate about telling stories with data. She specializes in translating raw data into insightful stories through carefully curated visuals and engaging narrative frameworks. Before joining academia, Lindy was the Research Director for research and advisory firm Radiant Advisors from 2011 through 2016. In this role Lindy led Radiant’s analyst activities in the confluence of data discovery, visualization, and visual analytics. She also developed the methodology for the Data Visualization Competency Center (DVCC), a framework for helping data-driven organizations to effectively implement data visualization for enterprise-wide visual data analysis and communication. Her tool-agnostic approach has been successfully implemented at a variety of organizations across several industries and with multiple visualization technologies, including Tableau, Qlik, and GoodData. She remains a respected analyst in the data visualization community and is a regular contributor to several industry publications as well as a speaker at conferences worldwide. Lindy began her academic career as an associate faculty member at City University of Seattle’s School of Applied Leadership where she taught graduate courses in business leadership from 2012 to 2016. In early 2016 she joined the ambitious team at the Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute and began contributing to multidisciplinary research focused on designing solutions for the next generation of supercomputers tasked with enabling cutting-edge extreme-scale science. Currently, Lindy leads RDI2’s research on understanding and preventing cyberbullying behaviors in emerging technology users through advanced computing approaches. Today, Lindy teaches courses in visual analytics and data visualization in Rutgers University’s Professional Science Masters program and in Montclair State University’s Business Analytics program. She is a recipient of the MSU Professing Excellence Award, which recognizes professors’ teaching excellence, particularly those who inspire and motivate students. This honor is especially meaningful to Lindy because in addition to her passion for teaching, her research includes a commitment to STEM advocacy, and she spends time on research related to increasing gender equity in CS&E and finding new and novel ways to nurture visual data literacy skills in early STEM learners. Lindy is an active committee member of the New Jersey Big Data Alliance, a partnership of New Jersey-based academic institutions that serves as the State’s legislated consortium on research, education and outreach in advanced computation and big data. She is the author of The Visual Imperative: Creating a Culture of Visual Discovery released by Morgan Kaufmann in 2016, and the owner of Black Spot Books, a traditional, analytics-driven small-press publishing house. text size too small, around Word font size 8-9 I think, tiring and difficult to read.

Love it

The most I got out of Visual Data Storytelling with Tableau is that the author is full of herself as indicated in the beginning when she told her life story. I get it: she has superior IQ , congratulations...I suppose. On Tableau, the book does a horrible job of trying to teach me anything new or is very low on pedagogy. A case in point: on page 75, I attempted to create a donut graph but was totally unable to understand the author's directions. I don't get why the font size of the reading material is so small; it must be 8 point or something, prompting me to skim the book a lot. All in all, it's ironical that the author talked about the power of grabbing my attention in the first few pages yet failed to do so for her book.

As an entry-level business analyst, I feel this book is helpful on how to make a successful business report. First of all, it differentiated the data Storytelling from the data visualization and revealed the power of the visual data stories. Then the book laid out the steps for preparing a narrated storytelling presentation including getting started with Tableau, preparing data, audience analysis, structuring stories and choosing the right chart. Last, the book introduced some advanced charts and listed some external resources.This book uses Tableau as a tool to illustrate how to prepare a narrated storytelling presentations. However, most of datasets mentioned in the book are not available on the website referred by the book .I sent an email to the author to ask about the datasets on Oct 26, 2018 and she replied with asking which dataset I want. I provided a list of dataset but didn’t get any response until now. With no dataset in hand, that means you are not able to repeat the steps that performed in the book and impossible to see the results.Overall the author has a great experience in data analysis, data visualization and data storytelling. And the book was organized well. If all the datasets can be provided online, that will be extremely helpful to readers.

Look, so far the actual message of the book is great. And perhaps for that reason alone, I’m here to share my disappointment with a sizable issue in the text of this piece that I truly hope they take the time to fix.The glaring problem that there seems to be at least one or two very obvious typos on every page. Whether it is the misspelling of a word, a space before a question mark, or a period missing at the end of the paragraph, it makes the text harder to read.The simple mistakes in this book are ridiculous. It almost looks like it was never edited before it was put into a Kindle book. As a writer myself, I know that if I’m going to publish something for sale, I damn well better have a second set of eyes go through a manuscript before I actually take it to market. It’s a bit offensive that they charged $15 for this, when they clearly didn’t spend any money on editing.Completely unacceptable.

This is the second book I have read by Seth Godin. I think this is a great book. It covers a fairly wide market segment with a very specific subject. Although not very deep and challenging, its concepts are easily accessible and speaks to people who have no clue about marketing as well as people who are in business leadership. Although not all of the book is written for a more seasoned marketer, there is plenty of great ideas for even the most curmudgeon, stuck-in-the-mud, business person. All together, this book lays an excellent foundation for those looking for fresh ideas in stale markets.

I'm a fan of Seth Godin's direct, no nonsense style. I've read several of his other books and subscribe to his daily blog, which is excellent. This book is unique and I think it's a particular standout. The format is unusual in that it's not broken down into standard chapters, but is one continuous unbroken chapter instead. The real-life sales, marketing, and creativity examples the author shares will really help push your thinking out of the box, and each company story is listed in the table of contents as though it was a stand-alone chapter. That makes it very convenient to refer back to specific examples after your initial reading.The analysis on the Wall Street Journal's advertising style is worth the price of the book alone. Very highly recommended.

As a small business owner myself, I have made many of the mistakes noted in the book regarding using traditional marketing techniques for my business. Seth Godin explains why traditional marketing/advertising, once tried-and-true methods of product market development, are less effective (if not ineffective) due to an oversaturated, over-advertised public, and commodity products that already dominate traditional ad space in print and media.The alternative strategy is simply to do something remarkable in your ad campaigns and in your product. He provides great examples from big corporations (like the Target `big box' store) to the doctor practicing medicine that invests extra because he GENUINELY CARES for his patience. Being remarkable provides a referable product or service that the consumer can't wait to tell others about. It does require creativity to succeed, and a little good fortune to be sure.Being remarkable targets one's audience and drives a sellable differentiation. There are many ways to get there, and there is risk involved. He elaborates on this issue and provides a realistic expectation, as well as a clear time when this approach is worth the risk.The book is so relevant to this age of the internet, and provides a practical alternative to shotgun approaches to marketing: REMARKABILITY!

You need a "P"urple Cow, which you can promote to the early adopters, "sneezers" and Innovators to get your marketing message through to the masses who stopped listen to you and your untargeted and often intrusive Ads.It sounds harsh, but life isn't fair. The earlier you start adjusting to the changing market, the better it will be for your future, unless you want to be the captain of a ship with a leak that can not be closed and looking forward to its certain end at the bottom of the ocean. The first life boats are already gone.You better get the next one and start working on your own purple cow. :)

Beth Raymer is a wonderful, instinctive writer; her ear for dialogue is supernatural (and hilarious), but so is her ability to render description and tell a good story. The writing is fevered, funny, and contains not one false note or awkward sentence. This book tells of her years working for professional sports bettors and gamblers, a career that was preceded by work as a stripper, quasi-social worker, and waitress. She also trains as an amateur boxer during the gambling years.To say the least, Raymer did not have a stable childhood, and she has commitment issues; but she writes with kindness about her family members. In fact, she is kind about almost everybody, even the lowlifes with whom she comes into contact in Las Vegas and the Caribbean venues where her gambling bosses do their business.While some of the gambling lingo is not understandable to an outsider, the book still gives an education about gambling, including definitions of terms and unwritten rules of the game, and a recognizable code of ethics. Not all big bookmakers are mob, she explains: many are smart, compulsive Jewish boys who are good at math. She develops a love and loyalty to the men who hire her, trust her, pay her well, and give her sincere fatherly advice. But these men are definitely dysfunctional:"The only thing you need to know is this: every gambler is a neurotic with an unconscious wish to lose. And as for the rare professionals who are talented enough to beat the house, rest assured they will go to whatever lengths necessary to surround themselves with people who will lose their money for them."All throughout the story, enormous sums of money are won, lost, thrown around in packages, stuffed into backpacks. This money doesn't go into bank accounts and investments, but into safe deposit boxes all over the city when it's not stolen or floating around between winners and losers. You can feel the intoxication and the lure of excitement, but Raymer doesn't sugar coat the downside of this lifestyle: the drug addiction, the danger, the ruined families. She's a realist, a humorous observer of the action including her own role in it. Well, almost a realist: we never learn for certain if she's really left the life behind her. We do learn that she's turned her sights to become a writer, and I can only hope she keeps on writing.

Good book about sports betting world both in Vegas and off-shore, but lacks the details (the ins and outs)that would have given the book more depth. For instance, it was never really explained as to what exactly Beth did for the bookies i.e. did she just answer phones,did she just make runs or was she just a good looking gofer. I can't imagine anyone in Vegas or New York paying her $10 or $20 an hour just to get donuts. In short, I think the really interesting part of the story was left out and can only hope the movie version will fill in blanks and make a more fulfilling tale. However, I did like the ending of the book with the unanswered questions: did she ever get out of the business and did she marry the boyfriend?

Book was well written and enjoyable to read.

This book was really good .I read a good amount and this was a new subject I don't think I have ever read about.It was interesting to look into that view of a lifesyle. There were several parts were I actually laughed out loud....example ....what her job was for her dad at the dog races to help with his system for winning. Overall a good diffrent type of read.

In my personal opinion, this is a great and we'll written memoir! No jumping around and the author added more in depth thoughts and feelings. She just didn't write what was going on, she gave you more insight on herself and the people around her. Knowing just as much about the people around her as I knew about her, made me love the book more. It was a hard book to put down.

I've heard a lot about Lay The Favorite over the past few months, and there was something about this book that had me seriously jonesing for it. When I got it in the mail, I read the book within 24 hours. Maybe it's trips to Vegas and my own experiences betting a $10 on an MLB or an NBA game. The book goes equally into Beth's own encounters with degenerate gambling and other walks of life that make her a perfect fit for Dink and Company.Go get this baby before the movie comes out sometime in 2012. It'll be worth your while.

Enjoyed reading details of the off shore gaming industry. Would have Liked more inside information about the movement of the wagering.line andd the setting of the opening number. Wish there were more books discussed the inside operation.

Absolutely loved most of the book. Hated the ending. As the daughter of a gambler, I understood all of what she was talking about. When someone asks, "Who do you like in so-and-so game?", my first question is "What's the line?" If you gamble, or love someone who does, this is a good book about their lives and the bookies lives. Never saw the movie. The reviews were horrible, but, they were mostly reviews from people who knew nothing about gambling. I give it 4 stars because it kept me slacking duties all the way to the end.
