I was hoping for some really good ideas for posing families, especially my own family and my grandchildren. I don't think I found one good idea here. There were not a lot of suggestions or ideas and what they did have, I have seem a million times before. I was very disappointed. I took it out before my family was coming and it didn't help me at all. If I hadn't passed the deadline, I would have sent it back. It just was not what I was looking for because it was not helpful in finding new ideas and ways to pose families.
As a professional photographer, I found Mr. Hurter's book to contain some valuable information. I wish he had gone into more detail on placing composing of two or more people. Composing is a an art and Mr. Hurter was able to help me understand some concepts about the important of diagonals, S curves, Z curves, head placement, etc., when composing individuals.I would encourage Mr. Hurter to publish another book that encompasses more detail in composing which is geared to the high end professional. This book is geared more towards the novice versus the professional. However, I still was able to acquire some useful pearls from his book. Good read.
There are times the author is explaining a concept and there is a photo on that page that has nothing to do with the subject. He explains some concepts that could really use a visual graphic. The few graphics he does has, he borrowed. From memory, I think they are from Norman Phillips.Based upon that, it seems quickly thrown together with what he had instead of more polished and planned out.As with any subjective art, in my opinion at least, some of the images he uses and praises, I would never even show as a proof, let alone a finished portrait. Most of them I love. I do not want to be too negative. I mostly like the book and I am glad to have it. I just can see it being so much more.Maybe it is a good time to update it :)
This book is a little dated in terms of family and group photo ideas. There is some good practical information for the beginning photographer or even mid-level learning to deal with outside lighting. If you are looking for more creative and photojournalist ideas in shooting, I'd advise you keep looking.
This is a wonderful book filled with group/family portrait posing, lighting, and composition guidelines. It also discusses clothing, lens choices, depth of field, lighting, building groups, things to avoid, etc. Nice photos to help illustrate, and also a section on digital files. Definitely worth the money and a great reference for anyone doing group/family photography.
I bought this used and it was worn out. Some pages were torn off but it still contains the vital information. I'm using it and gives great ideas for posing.

This book has some beautiful illustrations that are inspiring. The content was exactly what I was looking for in how to compose groups and it was easy to understand. As an educator, I know it helps students to see bad examples also. So, for me, it would have been helpful to have seen some examples of what not to do. But overall, I was pleased that the book was what I was expecting.
