This book is blunt, a shock, and exactly what I needed to wake up and see what men are really like and what they think about us.Luckily I read this book previous to meeting a man at a concert. I normally wouldn't ask questions because I was raised that it isn't appropriate. But I asked a lot of questions, and he answered them. Found out on the 2nd date that he had a cocaine addiction, almost lost his job, owns nothing after working for a good company for 28 years, and now addicted to other things that drain his wallet, and has an STD.He couldn't wait until the 3rd date because then we could go all the way! Who made up that rule? But it's in the book.The book really helped me out. And I reread it alot and wrote key things down so I would remember.The book made me realize that I'm pretty awesome, doing great, and I don't want a guy at all!They just want to use us!

This book truly changed my love life in a way that no other book, seminar or workshop has. I was single for over a decade. About 3 months after reading this book, multiple guys were wanting to get serious with me and about 10 months after, I met a wonderful guy, and we're in a healthy, loving long-term relationship. Part of why I was single for so long was me and my issues (such as trust, abandonment, fear of divorce, daddy issues, etc). Part of why I was single was also due to living in major cities like DC & NYC, where the culture places career first, relationships 2nd or 3rd, and the pool of men were happy to stay single and unattached for as long as possible. I spent years working on myself trying to attract an amazing relationship - I had a lot of work to do, and I buckled down and did it. I think of this book as the final tipping point for me to develop into a person who can attract amazing relationships. This book is a bit of tough love, but it's so worth it because it pushes you to be honest with yourself about your behavior. It compares and contrasts two types of women - placeholders and game changers, and clearly shows what the behaviors are of these two types are. The book lays it out as simple as "Do This" or "Don't do This." If you read this book, and truly study it and make changes in your mindset and behavior, you will see results. I littlerally would read over certain chapter before going on dates and it was a huge help. As someone who has read almost every book under the sun about relationships & dating in addition to taking courses and working with private dating coaches, this book truly lays out the best content to make a real change and transformation in finding the love that you deserve.

I read this book for the first time about two and a half years ago, started to practice it, got mixed results, read it again, internalised some more, got a little better results and repeated until I met a man who has managed to rock my world and make all my girlfriends jealous for a bit more than a year now. He did test me in a variety of ways and I could have never ever ever ever gone through the first five or so dates being so self-confident, unbothered and enjoying myself in the process had I never had GL's book.GL taught me everything that my parents never did and helped me find the peace of mind and confidence that I never thought I had. Through stumbling and a couple of failed attempts, little victories and a massive amount of self discovery I learnt to accept the amazing person that I was and commit to becoming the person I was always meant to be.As for the men.. My younger self could have never imagined that some men absolutely love to spoil their women, granted, if you let them! There are no guarantees of anything in life but this experience has given me the confidence that I can attract and retain a man of that caliber - if not even better.Update a month later: we're engaged now.

If you find yourself getting continuously wined and dined and pumped and dumped, this book will hold up a mirror to your life and set you straight. Be prepared for 100% brutal honesty! And it isn’t about playing silly games or following outdated “rules.” The book goes through a detailed blueprint of how to conduct yourself on a date, in a relationship, etc., but when it comes down to it, it’s all about self-respect, self-confidence, and never putting your true needs under the whims and desires of a guy who is just interested in making you a placeholder. A must-have for today’s woman!

Wow! You name it, I've read it! In my 53 years, I have yet to write a review review for a book. I read probably five-six books a month. Many on leadership as that that's my professional passion and others on relationship as since my divorce I seem to have attracted what my mom refers to as bottom feeders. My divorce rocked my world and I can't help but think had a serious impact on my self esteem, etc. I loved Lambert's direct, in your face approach to helping those of us who have been the "typical" women realize how short we sell ourselves in relationships. Of all (at least 30 relationship books that I have read), this book changed my life. Have referred it to every "typical" girlfriend I know!!!

Fun and easy to read. My daughter and I read through travel guides, searched the Net, and combed through all the info while trying to plan our trip to Alaska. "Alex in Alaska" gave us a reality check and was very up front about his opinions.He hit on all the 'little' things that the big guide books, and internet info, just didn't cover...like which side of the plane to sit on for the best view (coming and going); which highly rated eateries were good but overpriced and offered alternatives right next door; which major hotel had a terrible location; and did it all with humor. He even advised to come to Anchorage and then get out of town and visit surrounding areas.The book was very short, page wise, but long on practical advice and my daughter and I laughed aloud while reading it. Theonly reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because we aren't going to Alaska until the end of Sept. so we're waiting to see how Alex's 'guide' stacks up. However, even at only $3, it was one of the best 'guides' we read. It gave us landmarks and what was close to others so we could actually plan our day and then end up at a great local eatery near our hotel. Fun, fun, fun,read and worth every one of the 3 dollars.

I learned a lot. I have been dreaming of a cruise to Alaska since I was in high school. I'm 61 now. Life /kids /obligationsalways kept it a dream. But I thank you for your honesty. I too want to have a good time and bigger better is nice but I am not high maintenance and enjoy simpler.I am trying to learn to make me first. Not east after 40 odd years of every one else first. Anchorage Now is a fun, quick read that is a great supplement to whatever guide book you get on Anchorage. It has the advantage of recommendations and tips from a local, and with its brevity it does a great job of highlighting the must see and do things in Anchorage. Alex has a fun voice and gives great tips like the fact that Anchorage is not pedestrian friendly and which restaurants and bars are the worst in town. The one shortcoming is that for restaurants there aren't enough listed - just the single "best" one for each category Alex came up with. For an eight day trip, I know one place where I want to have dinner and one place where I don't but there are seven other dinners I'll be eating (and the same goes for lunch). A recommendation for a coffeeshop would also be nice. If it weren't for this shortcoming I would say this is the only guide book you'll need, as otherwise there are enough recommendations for things to do and see that I could easily fill my trip just with those. But this is certainly a great supplement to whatever other guide book you choose to help you wade through the seemingly overwhelming list of suggestions they contain.

An amusing, easy to read, brief guide to Anchorage. Some interesting and different view points. An interesting point of view that counteracts more stuffy ideas presented in standard tour guides. I did not totally agree with the author, but then we are both opinionated. Wish I could stay in Anchorage, long enough , to test out his theories.

Simple, straight forward advice. It is a quick easy read. Because we will only be in Anchorage for 2 days, it is important to us to experience the city as a traveler rather than as a tourist. We want to "feel" more than "see." I feel like this book meets that need.

Really enjoyed this travel guide geared for travelers who prefer activities and sights "off the beaten track." I appreciated the author's wit and honesty. One warning: while he provides recommendations on activities, restaurants, hotels, nightlife etc., addresses and phone numbers are not included. Not a problem for most tech-savvy readers. I would enjoy reading more from this travel writer.

I'd say any traveler in Alaska would put this author's information to good use. I'm planning my second vacation to Alaska, and this book confirms my own limited number observations and gives me plenty of ideas for this next visit.

Another awesome book by Jean Vanier. This would be great reading for any community to share in. When I was a part of a community of people with disabilities and their families, I took parts of this book as weekly meditation material and it resonated so deeply. But anyone who is a part of a community life would benefit from this book, especially if the community seems to be "broken". This is one I keep on my bookshelf, and if it disappears (as they do sometimes), I buy another one.

This is an amazing little book! Here Vanier was speaking to intellectual elites at Harvard about working with the challenged, who outwardly seem to offer little to community life -- but in fact they receive life from acceptance by the community, and the community is enlivened by the living water they supply!

Jean Vanier has written an invitation to be real, to embrace becoming, to rejoice in our vulnerability and to invite the other in the life affirming journey of community. He gives new insights to words and concepts that have become so familiar but have lost their power to shape us as sons as daughters of our Father!

Vanier is one of the rare gifts from God that a generation gets and doesn't realize is a gift until almost the end of their journey. This is a timeless resource for ministers and lay people alike who are looking for how to experience and share God in a more visceral way.

Not only inspiring, but humbling. Vanier has captured the essence of our own nature through his interaction with those we call "disabled".

In this short read, Jean Vanier touches on some of the primary heart issues with which people struggle. He is talking directly from his experience with his wisdom from the experience of working with and loving disabled people. One theme is give your life to others and see how God has designed us to live in community. The thoughts I had while reading is how to diagnose my own heart and my motives. Once my own agenda is stripped away and my actions are solely for others, which is rare, then I can see my own heart and superficial humility - and then there is an opportunity for real growth. This should be on the bookshelf of anyone seeking to serve others. There are many nuggets of wisdom in his words regardless of the people in your life: children, parents, coworkers, neighbors, etc.

You know how you read a book and you think, not much to it. In fact, only about a chapters worth of content is worth anything at all. Could have been a pamphlet instead of a book. Well, this book is short and every paragraph is packed with insights and profound, life changing words. Worth every penny!

I wasn't really sure what to expect with Erotic Stories by Punjabi Widows and admit I picked it up solely because it was part of Reese Witherspoon's book club (her recommendations have been pretty on point so far!). But I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the book and it opened up a whole new world to me (let me be clear that world is the one in which Punjabi widows live and not necessarily an "erotic" world LOL). The story is centered on Nikki, a first-generation 22-year-old Punjabi girl navigating 21st century England with a very traditional mom and sister. When Nikki gets a job teaching Punjabi widows to write, the class quickly turns into a time for the widows to share erotic stories born out of their imaginations. And let me tell you, the stories are not what you'd expect coming from these ladies! They are seriously naughty.See, once these Punjabi women became widows, they were essentially ignored. Society dictates that they are no longer able to find love or romance, so they spend a lot of time with each other. Most people think they are just having "old lady" conversations with each other, but these women still have needs and desires. Nikki's class gives them the power to share these stories in a more formal setting and document them. In the meantime, Nikki is struggling with being independent and dating in a modern world when her traditional family and many other Punjabi are accustomed to arranged marriages, reserved women, and close-knit families.There's so much more going on in this book, including a mysterious death that Nikki is intent on learning more about. Don't write this novel off as being "romance" or "trashy;" it's truly about the immigrant experience and will give you insight into a culture that doesn't seem to get a ton of attention in most cases

Bali Kaur Jaswal’ s Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows is mostly what it says it is. Which is to say this is not for the youngsters. The Erotic stories, and there are a few, are titillating but not particularly explicit. If you do not like reading about mostly conventional fantasies, the title of the book should be sufficient warning.Ms. Jaswal has attempted a number of story lines. In no particular order:A young woman seeking to balance between her culture, her traditional family and her modern ideas.Eastern, specifically Punjabi culture meets Western, specifically British.The suppression of women, specifically older, women in the Punjabi culture.These same women finding an outlet or at least an expression for their sexualityOne or more mysterious deaths.And these are only the major story lines. Something of a crowded field for a 298 page novel.Initially I had expected a fairly balances discussion of traditional values versus modern values, but every chapter or so a new story line opened. This creates a lot to think about but not so much in the way of answers.The erotic stories are scattered about and are the result of the Punjabi Widows hijacking an English Language course that was to be taught by Nikki, a modern Punjabi woman, law school dropout seeking her purpose while maintain her links to her mother and dealing with the recent death of her father, who may have died angry with Nikki and coming to terms with the traditions of her culture and looking for Mr. Right. Like I said a lot of story lines. O I forgot there are at least one suspicious death; actually two.To her credit, Ms Jaswal does a good job describing Punjabi culture, its overly male orientation and the problems of living in or nearly in this community. I like a book that take the reader into a world previously unknown but from reality. Erotic Stories succeeds at this. Despite the overall shallow handling of the deeper themes in her novel, when the time comes to bring the threads together and bring about the climax (pun not exactly intended) she builds the tension and keeps the reader engaged and eager for the finish.The denouement arrives in the form of several chapters, each designed to tie up all loose ends. With this many story lines, there are going to be loose ends. In this, a better editor would have guided the author to a shorter simpler wind up.

Being raised in a Romanian Orthodox culture, reading a book about Punjabi women was a good experience to learn about the ways other women dealt with patriarchy and find new ways of tiny freedoms in their private life.I think I was into this book because I witnessed myself from old romanian women dirty jokes and stories and I always knew somehow this was something very womanly. Only getting older did I understood that this was the way a patriarchal society goes, where our stories are private and men stories are public and published.I think this book was a nice read and I do recommend it since I do not find very often opportunities to be immersed into an immigrant Punjabi women’s club. It is funny and I would have loved more of this to permeate the book, even though i do understand the logic of the dark elements in the story. The arranged or forced marriages, the honor, the crimes, they are all part of a society ruled by men and it was wise for the author to give a more realistic image of these deep patriarchal communities.

I began this story because I saw it at target and the summary definitely peaked my interest. I got the sample from kindle and I was hooked. This story took me by surprise so many times, it was a whirlwind and I lived for it. It was incredibly interesting to learn a small portion of their culture through this book and has inspired me to look into the culture further. I 100% recommend this book to anyone, not only was it a little bit of mystery, and comedy, but it was such a mix of everything. It was written beautifully and should be enjoyed by many.
