My in-laws were married on June 19, 1936 and they often spoke of this fight. I enjoyed the background history of the fight in the back of the book.This book is a true picture of the plight during the Great Depression yet the message was strong that no matter what, family stays together even if Jimmie is absent from the fold.This book is a must for purchase during 2012 and a great contribution to a church library.

The book gives an accurate description of the experience of many Black American families in the Depression era. Christopher Paul Curtis tells the story convincingly from the perspective of a 10-year-old girl. Excellent! We quote the book often. Read it; be sensitive to it; laugh often; be more enriched.

I have read almost 4 books by G. K. Chesterton thus far; and Orthodoxy is a masterpiece. The best of what I have read from him yet. Witty, hilarious, intellectually astute--Chesterton is in fine form throughout. And though Orthodoxy is heady you will find that Chesterton's humor and skill with the pen makes it an almost addictive read. His paradoxical manner of framing big ideas, his undeniable ability to wield "common" sense as a weapon, his way of speaking to universal human experiences--together makes him one of the most enjoyable writers of his time. And he's not pulling any punches with the philosophers of his day either.In the introduction, Chesterton self-deprecatingly describes himself as a man who sent out from England to explore new lands, but gets blown off course in his travels and unknowingly arrives back in downtown London--where he then proceeds to claim this "new land" for England! Chesterton then charts his spiritual journey from agnosticism to Christianity and how he unknowingly discovered this "new doctrine" on his own--only to find out, much to his surprise, that it was nothing more than the old Christian doctrine which has been believed for thousands of years. Chesterton is a late comer to the party, and he doesn't mind admitting that fact throughout!Chesterton rails against intellectualism--against the scholastics and against the George Bernard Shaw types. The atheist scientist who says there is no transcendent meaning to this thing called life. Grown up skeptics and modernized "experts" who care little for the world. In short Chesterton realizes that the fairy tales that he knew as a child, that wonder he felt within the deepest part of him when he was young, the feeling that the grass was green because it was "supposed to be green"--were actually all true. The reason the tales of the lady and the dragon, or jack and the beanstalk resonated with him so much as a child because they spoke to a certain human truth--an internal testimony, that there is something more than just molecules and chance. There had to be something more. So Chesterton figures out an understanding of original sin, of creation, of a transcendent God, and of the archetypal tale because it was really true--the story of God coming into the world to bring man back to Himself. Chesterton is unabashedly romantic, and he rejoices to find that Christianity is as well.In the chapter that perhaps hit me the hardest (The Flag of the World), Chesterton confronts exactly what our posture as Christians needs to be towards the world. It cannot be escapism or pessimism; an unhealthy desire to withdraw from the darkness of the world: "For our Titanic purposes of faith and revolution, what we need is not the cold acceptance of the world as a compromise, but some way in which we can heartily hate and heartily love it. We do not want joy and anger to neutralize each other and produce a surly contentment; we want a fiercer delight and a fiercer discontent. We have to feel the universe at once as an ogre' castle, to be stormed, and yet as our own cottage, to which we can return at evening." Wow. That is romance in writing--and ointment to my own personal numbness. Another one: "The point is not that this world is too sad to love or too glad not to love; the point is that when you do love a thing, its gladness is a reason for loving it, and its sadness a reason for loving it more." "A man's friend leaves him as he is: his wife loves him and is always trying to turn him into somebody else."This is a great book, and I am already doing a second pass through it because there is so much in it that I missed. Chesterton is medicinal to the ills of a modern world--and Orthodoxy in particular has lost no degree of relevance in the century that has past since its composition.

What I love about this book is Chesterton's well-reasoned arguments and his writing style. His arguments are down-to-Earth with a universal appeal - there's no high-brow, mind-bending gymnastics here. He's as straight-forward about explaining his thinking and reasoning as is that marvelous character he created in his Father Brown fictional murder mystery stories.There was at least one point of religious thought I don't agree with Chesterton about, but he makes me think - about things and in ways I didn't think on my own. And a couple of things that gave me pause, I had to change my mind about by the time I was finished with the book.Oh - there's this other thing. Even if you don't care about Christian apologetics, read this for the language. It is beautiful. It is tasty. It is so satisfying! This book is an intellectual delight, but written for the ordinary person on the street. It is not like a spiritually edifying book read for inspiration. You might think about things not thought of before. You certainly will marvel at how his brain worked and his language use. Enjoy!

His intellect is so far ahead of an average guy like me, that I had to read this slowly, and will need to read it again. If you're not a regular reader, you may not want to start with this one.

A culture based on orthodox Christian philosophy is a saner culture, a more artistic culture, a more rational culture, a more natural culture.

Born in Brooklyn in 1934, Diane di Prima emerged as a member of the Beat Generation in New York in the late ’50s; in the early ’60s, she founded the important mimeo magazine, The Floating Bear, with LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka). About the Author

Lindy Ryan is passionate about telling stories with data. She specializes in translating raw data into insightful stories through carefully curated visuals and engaging narrative frameworks. Before joining academia, Lindy was the Research Director for research and advisory firm Radiant Advisors from 2011 through 2016. In this role Lindy led Radiant’s analyst activities in the confluence of data discovery, visualization, and visual analytics. She also developed the methodology for the Data Visualization Competency Center (DVCC), a framework for helping data-driven organizations to effectively implement data visualization for enterprise-wide visual data analysis and communication. Her tool-agnostic approach has been successfully implemented at a variety of organizations across several industries and with multiple visualization technologies, including Tableau, Qlik, and GoodData. She remains a respected analyst in the data visualization community and is a regular contributor to several industry publications as well as a speaker at conferences worldwide. Lindy began her academic career as an associate faculty member at City University of Seattle’s School of Applied Leadership where she taught graduate courses in business leadership from 2012 to 2016. In early 2016 she joined the ambitious team at the Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute and began contributing to multidisciplinary research focused on designing solutions for the next generation of supercomputers tasked with enabling cutting-edge extreme-scale science. Currently, Lindy leads RDI2’s research on understanding and preventing cyberbullying behaviors in emerging technology users through advanced computing approaches. All in all, it's ironical that the author talked about the power of grabbing my attention in the first few pages yet failed to do so for her book.

Last, the book introduced some advanced charts and listed some external resources.This book uses Tableau as a tool to illustrate how to prepare a narrated storytelling presentations. However, most of datasets mentioned in the book are not available on the website referred by the book .I sent an email to the author to ask about the datasets on Oct 26, 2018 and she replied with asking which dataset I want. I provided a list of dataset but didn’t get any response until now. With no dataset in hand, that means you are not able to repeat the steps that performed in the book and impossible to see the results.Overall the author has a great experience in data analysis, data visualization and data storytelling. And the book was organized well. If all the datasets can be provided online, that will be extremely helpful to readers.

And perhaps for that reason alone, I’m here to share my disappointment with a sizable issue in the text of this piece that I truly hope they take the time to fix.The glaring problem that there seems to be at least one or two very obvious typos on every page. Whether it is the misspelling of a word, a space before a question mark, or a period missing at the end of the paragraph, it makes the text harder to read.The simple mistakes in this book are ridiculous. It almost looks like it was never edited before it was put into a Kindle book. As a writer myself, I know that if I’m going to publish something for sale, I damn well better have a second set of eyes go through a manuscript before I actually take it to market. It’s a bit offensive that they charged $15 for this, when they clearly didn’t spend any money on editing.Completely unacceptable.

This is the second book I have read by Seth Godin. I think this is a great book. It covers a fairly wide market segment with a very specific subject. Although not very deep and challenging, its concepts are easily accessible and speaks to people who have no clue about marketing as well as people who are in business leadership. Although not all of the book is written for a more seasoned marketer, there is plenty of great ideas for even the most curmudgeon, stuck-in-the-mud, business person. All together, this book lays an excellent foundation for those looking for fresh ideas in stale markets.

I'm a fan of Seth Godin's direct, no nonsense style. I've read several of his other books and subscribe to his daily blog, which is excellent. This book is unique and I think it's a particular standout. The format is unusual in that it's not broken down into standard chapters, but is one continuous unbroken chapter instead. The real-life sales, marketing, and creativity examples the author shares will really help push your thinking out of the box, and each company story is listed in the table of contents as though it was a stand-alone chapter. That makes it very convenient to refer back to specific examples after your initial reading.The analysis on the Wall Street Journal's advertising style is worth the price of the book alone. Very highly recommended.

He provides great examples from big corporations (like the Target `big box' store) to the doctor practicing medicine that invests extra because he GENUINELY CARES for his patience. Being remarkable provides a referable product or service that the consumer can't wait to tell others about. It does require creativity to succeed, and a little good fortune to be sure.Being remarkable targets one's audience and drives a sellable differentiation. There are many ways to get there, and there is risk involved. He elaborates on this issue and provides a realistic expectation, as well as a clear time when this approach is worth the risk.The book is so relevant to this age of the internet, and provides a practical alternative to shotgun approaches to marketing: REMARKABILITY!

You need a "P"urple Cow, which you can promote to the early adopters, "sneezers" and Innovators to get your marketing message through to the masses who stopped listen to you and your untargeted and often intrusive Ads.It sounds harsh, but life isn't fair. The earlier you start adjusting to the changing market, the better it will be for your future, unless you want to be the captain of a ship with a leak that can not be closed and looking forward to its certain end at the bottom of the ocean. The first life boats are already gone.You better get the next one and start working on your own purple cow. :)
