It almost looks like it was never edited before it was put into a Kindle book. As a writer myself, I know that if I’m going to publish something for sale, I damn well better have a second set of eyes go through a manuscript before I actually take it to market. It’s a bit offensive that they charged $15 for this, when they clearly didn’t spend any money on editing.Completely unacceptable.

This is the second book I have read by Seth Godin. I think this is a great book. It covers a fairly wide market segment with a very specific subject. Although not very deep and challenging, its concepts are easily accessible and speaks to people who have no clue about marketing as well as people who are in business leadership. Although not all of the book is written for a more seasoned marketer, there is plenty of great ideas for even the most curmudgeon, stuck-in-the-mud, business person. Beth Raymer is a wonderful, instinctive writer; her ear for dialogue is supernatural (and hilarious), but so is her ability to render description and tell a good story. The writing is fevered, funny, and contains not one false note or awkward sentence. This book tells of her years working for professional sports bettors and gamblers, a career that was preceded by work as a stripper, quasi-social worker, and waitress. She also trains as an amateur boxer during the gambling years.To say the least, Raymer did not have a stable childhood, and she has commitment issues; but she writes with kindness about her family members. In fact, she is kind about almost everybody, even the lowlifes with whom she comes into contact in Las Vegas and the Caribbean venues where her gambling bosses do their business.While some of the gambling lingo is not understandable to an outsider, the book still gives an education about gambling, including definitions of terms and unwritten rules of the game, and a recognizable code of ethics. Not all big bookmakers are mob, she explains: many are smart, compulsive Jewish boys who are good at math. She develops a love and loyalty to the men who hire her, trust her, pay her well, and give her sincere fatherly advice. But these men are definitely dysfunctional:"The only thing you need to know is this: every gambler is a neurotic with an unconscious wish to lose. And as for the rare professionals who are talented enough to beat the house, rest assured they will go to whatever lengths necessary to surround themselves with people who will lose their money for them."All throughout the story, enormous sums of money are won, lost, thrown around in packages, stuffed into backpacks. This money doesn't go into bank accounts and investments, but into safe deposit boxes all over the city when it's not stolen or floating around between winners and losers. You can feel the intoxication and the lure of excitement, but Raymer doesn't sugar coat the downside of this lifestyle: the drug addiction, the danger, the ruined families. She's a realist, a humorous observer of the action including her own role in it. Well, almost a realist: we never learn for certain if she's really left the life behind her. We do learn that she's turned her sights to become a writer, and I can only hope she keeps on writing.

Good book about sports betting world both in Vegas and off-shore, but lacks the details (the ins and outs)that would have given the book more depth. For instance, it was never really explained as to what exactly Beth did for the bookies i.e. did she just answer phones,did she just make runs or was she just a good looking gofer. I can't imagine anyone in Vegas or New York paying her $10 or $20 an hour just to get donuts. In short, I think the really interesting part of the story was left out and can only hope the movie version will fill in blanks and make a more fulfilling tale. However, I did like the ending of the book with the unanswered questions: did she ever get out of the business and did she marry the boyfriend?

Book was well written and enjoyable to read.

This book was really good .I read a good amount and this was a new subject I don't think I have ever read about.It was interesting to look into that view of a lifesyle. There were several parts were I actually laughed out loud....example ....what her job was for her dad at the dog races to help with his system for winning. Overall a good diffrent type of read.

In my personal opinion, this is a great and we'll written memoir! No jumping around and the author added more in depth thoughts and feelings. She just didn't write what was going on, she gave you more insight on herself and the people around her. Knowing just as much about the people around her as I knew about her, made me love the book more. It was a hard book to put down.

I've heard a lot about Lay The Favorite over the past few months, and there was something about this book that had me seriously jonesing for it. When I got it in the mail, I read the book within 24 hours. Maybe it's trips to Vegas and my own experiences betting a $10 on an MLB or an NBA game. The book goes equally into Beth's own encounters with degenerate gambling and other walks of life that make her a perfect fit for Dink and Company.Go get this baby before the movie comes out sometime in 2012. It'll be worth your while.

Absolutely loved most of the book. Hated the ending. As the daughter of a gambler, I understood all of what she was talking about. When someone asks, "Who do you like in so-and-so game?", my first question is "What's the line?" If you gamble, or love someone who does, this is a good book about their lives and the bookies lives. Never saw the movie. The reviews were horrible, but, they were mostly reviews from people who knew nothing about gambling. I give it 4 stars because it kept me slacking duties all the way to the end.

Kindle edition: really difficult to read because formatting is off throughout the book with numbers transposed over text and text on text in the Moss Tips Sections. Writing style is juvenile as are the cartoon stick figures used to illustrate. This book is not worth the price.

A very enjoyable introduction to growing and understanding moss in horticulture. Has detailed instructions and nice ideas for displaying moss bonsai and moss gardens.

The book is beautifully done. The pictures and the tutorials are great. I wish it had a better index of "ingredients" and where to purchase them from.

Do NOT give this book to teens! I am a youth pastor and reject this book as helpful.Background of me: I read it as a 16-year-old and it skewed my view for years as to how to find a spouse. (I'm 29 now and happily married, though at age 24 had a relationship end horribly, with unneeded and drawn out pain afterward, in part I attribute to the teachings of this book that were the foundations of that relationship. Also a bad book for teens: "When God Writes Your Love Story" by Eric and Leslie Ludy).I am all for Christian purity. I am a youth pastor as I said. When this book emphasizes "be pure and holy", I couldn't agree more! BUT, when this book teaches that to every person you date you give a portion of your heart, I whole-heartedly disagree! (pardon the pun!) They essentially teach that if you date someone and don't marry them, you've given them half your heart, and you only have 50% of a heart for your spouse. Thus, the natural conclusion is for any thinking teen "I must only date one person! Thus, I must marry my first boyfriend/girlfriend!" You know what that leads to? EITHER never allowing yourself to date someone until you know you can marry them (which is the real point of dating, isn't it?), OR not allowing yourself to break-up with someone you should break-up with but marrying them instead! Both awful!When someone has a child, they love them 100%. When they have a second child, do they love them each 50%? No! They love them both 100%. Love is exponential. You can love a girlfriend/boyfriend 100%, and have it not lead to marriage, and then still love your future spouse 100%. The fundamental basis for this book is flawed.My entire generation of Christians have been scared to date and thus struggling to find spouses because of books like this one and "When God Writes Your Love Story."As a youth pastor (and grad of The Master's Seminary), I fully recommend NOT buying this book for your teens.

There are better books on Christian relationships than Harris' book. I was reluctant to write a review until I learned Harris himself is now indirectly involved in a sex scandal that caused him to step down from his pastoral work. I felt some unease about his message, and after I decided one day to google "Josh Harris Sex Scandal", I now I feel compelled to discourage Christians from buying into what he is selling.As I read the book, I thought to myself, "this reads like some kid in high school writing stuff down and who can't think coherently." Worse, he somehow suggests his courtship model is somehow ordained by God and that if couples follow it, they're somehow guaranteed a happily-ever-after relationship. I knew it was scam book, and at the time of its publication it was the latest rage in some churches. One zealous loudmouth at church preached it as "God's way" for everyone. He and his girl friend followed it to the letter, evangelized with it for a while until they got divorced 4 years later.Should Christians Kiss dating goodbye? The Bible doesn't give a simple formula for courtship. If anything I've been struck by the variety of ways God unites couples, and sometimes its pretty sordid. God had Hosea marry a whore, God killed Ezekiel's cherished wife, God united Isaac with Rebecca through a miracle, Jacob fell in love with Rachel's beauty, God had Esther herded into a kings harem, Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines, and Ruth spruced herself up and laid down at Boaz's feet while he was about to sleep. Godly men like Jeremiah and Daniel did not find wives. The unspoken implication of Harris' book is that if one is not happily married, one somehow failed to do things God's way, and God's way is Harris' courtship model. The Bible doesn't really say there is a method, except to say it is ultimately by God's blessing, and to make decisions wisely and not to be yoked with an unbeliever.I taught a Bible study to college age students. Ironically by the end of the school year the numbers had risen and I had an abundance of 19-year-old girls attending. I expressed my critical view of Harris' book and warned them that God doesn't promise happily ever after. They should simply live a pure life because it pleases God, not because it would land them prince charming (as Harris book insinuates). If they do marry, I told them to choose wisely, and that means asking basic questions like -- how many kids do you want, where do you want to live, will you travel for the husband or wife's career, etc. There is much wiser counsel from other books than Harris' book.At the time I wondered if I was doing the right thing by dissuading them form Harris' book. Now in retrospect, given the divorces of some of his most devoted advocates, I'm glad I suggested other books. This was about 11 years ago before e-harmony came around and Neil Clark Warren had commercialized his work, but Warren's book listed down all the questions people should ask themselves and each other before getting involved. Ben Young's "Ten Commandments of Dating" was very sensible, but Warren's book was the most well conceived based on Warren's decades of private practice in dealing with couples.

Really good book. My daughter really hasrecommended this book since she read it.

This book has helped me through ALOT of relationship pain i reccomend it for anyone who needs to remind themselves why its worth the wait !
