Fantastic cookbook! Fun stories, nice photos, very interesting recipes. I've been collecting cookbooks from the UK, to better familiarize myself with the cuisine from my ancestral homeland and this one is a worthy addition. There is a meatless pie in here that I read about a while back, so I tracked down the recipe to this book and bought it. Although I haven't yet made anything from the book (I'm busy, and also insufferably lazy) I definitely will. One of their recommended ingredients is ground suet, which I'm willing to try but is next to impossible to find in my neighborhood. That said, mouth-watering recipes and a great presentation.

I was eager to get this book because I traveled to London and enjoyed eating at Pieminister. I hoped to get some recipes to try at home. I was disappointed that most of the recipes weren't for the pies you can regularly purchase from the store. I would have much preferred to find those recipes in this book and not recipes for things that were not as expected and that I wasn't as interested in. There was the recipe for the crust and one of two of the pies, but the others I probably won't use.

Great fun. More a series of inspirations than a rigid "do it this way only" book, the pie guys have included recipes for a number of different crusts and seasonal pies, both double and single crust. It's great encouragement to happily mess about with lots of ingredients, such as the steak and Stilton pie we made for Christmas (yum!). Plus I can finally identify and use celeriac.

I love this book for both content of recipes and good humour. We are unable to purchase Pieminister pies in Canada and were thrilled to be able to purchase this cookbook to make our own after we fell in love with them in Yorkshire. Well done and thank you!!!

Its whimsical and fun to read and the photography of the pies makes me want to run right out and get the ingrediants so I can start cooking them. Yum Yum Yum

Shakespeare for our times. I love it when an articulate writer lets her imagination take wing. For a first novel, too, just amazing. Got it in one, Ms Morgenstern. More, please!

As soon as I finished the Night Circus two things happened; first, it shot to the top of my favorites list and second, I simply had to reread it. I couldn't let the world go so quickly. This is the book I turn to when I want to be encompassed and surrounded by a luscious and fantastic world that is better than mine. I adore the characters, but the descriptions of the circus itself leave marks. When I think of wonder and magic, this world and it's circus are what define those qualities. I've never read anything quite like this, and I'm afraid that I might not ever find something as wonderful as it again, but I hold out hope.If you like Harry Potter, you'll probably like this, though it is very different. If you, like me, adore this book and are looking for something else to read, go try Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith, and it's sequel Court Duel.If you want another wonderful way to experience this book: listen to the audiobook. It's read by Jim Dale, and it is magic.

This book is so bad. I really wanted to like it. It had a seemingly compelling plot and the reviews are great. But I hated it. I couldn't even finish it. There haven't been too many books I couldn't finish but this is one of them. I don't really have the energy to write in detail everything I didn't like but I'll try to make a few observations. It felt empty, like a made-for-TV movie. Absolutely no depth or meaningful character development. The writing style was terrible. It seemed like it was written by a prodigious child just learning about descriptive language and trying too hard to use their vocabulary words. I can't believe an adult has gotten so much praise for this. The suspense is not suspenseful. Even a casual reader should have no problem seeing things before they happen. That's not inherently a bad thing. I read books all the time that are not suspenseful, but your enjoyment of this particular story will almost certainly be determined by how suspenseful you find it because it was obviously written in a way to keep you glued to the page. It just fails miserably.I might have liked this story when I was a kid or pre-teen but I'm genuinely astounded that so many adults are fans of this book.

“What kind of circus is only open at night?” (Morgenstern, 3)The Night Circus is enchanting and mysterious. Prepare yourself for a magical story of intrigue and whimsy. Erin Morgenstern will make you feel like you are a part of the circus. Welcome to Le Cirque des Rêves.“Trespasser Will Be Exsanguinated.” (Morgenstern, 51).The Plot: The Night Circus begins in 1873 as Prospero the Enchanter learns that he has a daughter to be left in his care; a daughter with a special magical ability. It is this ability that brings about a mysterious meeting and the beginning of a game. As the years go by, Prospero meticulously trains his daughter Celia in the art of illusion, while the man in the grey suit, from the mysterious meeting, trains his student Marco. Both are bound together to play an unknown game with unknown rules until a winner is judged. The Night Circus becomes the arena for this game, and the moves made by Celia and Marco affect everyone involved in the circus. As the years go by, the two begin to fall in love, finding it more difficult to keep playing the game. A choice has to be made, to finish the game at all costs, or to give in to love and let the circus end.Let me just start out by saying that The Night Circus is definitely one that you have to pay attention to the chapter titles and timelines. With that being said, I LOVED this book. I really took my time reading it and soaking it all in and I was astounded by the immense imagery and story building found in this book! Every single piece of information, and person you meet, has some sort of effect on, or part to play in, the circus. There are so many parts to the whole, and even going backward and forward in time with the chapters helps you to understand what is going on within the circus and the game that Celia and Marco are bound to. Between some of the chapters you can also find pieces of a 2nd person point of view story line that makes you FEEL like you are walking through The Night Circus! The plot, the circus detail, and the characters are amazingly written in this one!The first character we are introduced to is Prospero, or Hector Bowen. He is ultimately the reason behind the circus and the plot because of his choice to start the game with his daughter Celia. Though he is an integral part of the story, I found him greedy and cruel and felt that he cared more about the game and it’s outcome then he did his own daughter. In the beginning of the story we are also introduced to Mr. A. H. in the grey suit. He is also an integral part of the story, as he is the mentor of Marco, Celia’s opponent. Mr. A. H. is mysterious, quiet, and quite possibly a murderer. Our main character, Celia is definitely a favorite character of mine. She is strong, beautiful, and talented in her abilities. She also captures my heart because she is a major bookworm, and holds very high morals. It is no wonder that Marco falls in love with her!Celia’s opponent Marco is a man of mystery. He was taken from an orphanage by Mr. A. H., so his background and origin are unknown. In his first encounter with Celia, he seems mildly intimidated and nervous. He becomes very restless in his training, and has slightly devious aspects in his game moves, but he plays the role of a co-main character well.Though we are introduced to many other characters, with them all being integral parts of the story and the circus, we have one other main character to consider. Bailey is introduced to us further in the story, and further in the future, and starts off as a circus spectator. He begins to build a relationship with the twins, Poppet and Widget (whom were born in the circus on opening night, thus being endowed with magical abilities), and in time, becomes a very important piece to the story. It is Bailey’s childish innocence and ability to dream that ties things together and ultimately offers a resolution to the game.“When you were five years old you turned a laundry tub into a pirate ship and launched an attack against my hydrangeas in my garden.” (Morgenstern, 87).I recommend reading this one slowly so you can take it all in. You will truly feel like part of the circus. Pay close attention to the dates in front of the chapters and let yourself be immersed into the imagery of The Night Circus.“You think, as you walk away from Le Cirque des Rêves and into the creeping dawn, that you felt more awake within the confines of the circus.: (Morgenstern, 387).

Preachy. We already know this stuff.

All I can say is that this book has been a life life-changing journey for me. By far my favorite self-help book (many of which I find banal), if one could call it that. It includes some profound insights/quotes and stories, along with a comprehensible explanation of some fairly esoteric Buddhist principles.Often Tara uses the stories and experiences of the people she has met and helped along her path to aid or illustrate a point, which makes it more enjoyable to read than a book in which the author is always speaking to the reader in the abstract. It really helps to humanize her ideas and bring them home. The narrative is very well done. The book begins by characterizing the commonplace anxieties of modern life, including insecurities around being good enough and the search for satisfaction and purpose. She invites the reader to share her own journey and relate to her experiences. She gives an explanation of what 'Radical Acceptance' is and goes on in the subsequent chapter to share the stories of her friends & clients, using them to illustrate how her teachings have helped liberate them from their experiences. One of the things Tara does remarkably well is incorporate wisdom, poetry, and stories from various spiritual sources, in a way that really melds into what she is trying to teach. It's clear that she has much more to offer than her personal wisdom, but also the wisdom of teachers past. My favorite quote from the book (regrettably I do not have the source's name) is from a Zen philosopher: "true happiness is learning to live with imperfection". This comes to mind regularly when I am worried about myself or upset that something isn't as I want it to be.What I like the most about this book is that it really stands apart to me as a Buddhist teaching text. I've embarked on Zen reading before, but this is the first one to actually inspire me to begin my own meditation practice. In fact, I've begun watching her YouTube videos also, and really feel that she is an adept spiritual teacher. That said, I don't think one has to adopt the Buddhist philosophy to get something out of this book, but I guarantee that a read through it will impress upon the reader some of the wisest lessons it has to offer, which I find are much more humanistic than typical religious dogma, and can fit into any belief system.

This book was everything I’ve needed my entire life. My therapist recommended this book when I hit a low point— I was struggling to find a job and had gained significant weight due to a long history of stress-induced compulsive eating. I had hit rock bottom in terms of self worth. While I had practiced vipassana/insight meditation for years, this book revolutionized how I practice. It taught me to how to welcome my difficult thoughts and feelings into my practice and gain wisdom from them.I’ve been a very emotional person ever since I was a child. I easily got upset and was constantly sent messages like “Don’t take things so personally” and “Get over it.” Over the years, I learned to suppress my emotions and deny them. I learned maladaptive behaviors like the compulsive eating or lashing out at people after pent up feelings. This book taught me a totally new way to relate to my emotions. I’ve learned to feel them in my body, explore the messages they hold, offer them kindness, and ultimately move past them. Ironically, I never really knew how to “not take things personally” until I read this book. Unlike anything else I have ever encountered, this book gave me the tools I needed to get through life’s hardships and my emotional turbulence. The writing is also beautiful. Tara Brach artfully shifts between stories about herself and her patients, Buddhist wisdom, excerpts from poems/fables, and advice for her readers. Since I had already been practicing Buddhist meditation for a while, I was already sold on all the Buddhist teachings in the book. I could imagine that a person new to Buddhism might relate to the book differently. In summary, this book was everything I needed and changed my life. I highly recommend it. I know I will turn back to it for years to come. Thank you Tara for your wisdom.

If I could give this book ten stars, I would.I liked it so much, I purchased five more to give away.I don't think everyone needs this book. Although I am sure it would benefit everyone. But, for those of you who are like me, this book can be described as being 'needed'! I am a perfectionist, always striving, never accepting myself the way I am, always harsh with myself, etc. etc. I think I will read this book at least once a year for the rest of my life. I wasn't raised Buddhist and would not describe myself as Buddhist now, but that did not detract in any way from my ability to absorb the truths in this book.

This is a practical, well-written, generous-hearted, hopeful book. I strongly recommend the book and most of the practices to any reader. However, if you have suffered significant abuse or trauma, you should not attempt the visualisations and meditation in Chapter 9, tonglen, regarding those issues. This book is most helpful for those who are managing more typical sufferings; stress; being self-critical or judgmental of others; experiencing general anxiety; struggling with self-image or forgiveness of others, etc. You will find peace, hope, and happiness through the practices artfully conveyed in this book. Thank you, Tara.

Review

Readers will be shocked by the brutality (Sabine) encounters during this little-known historical episode. (Kirkus Reviews 2008-01-15)A gripping story of a remarkable teen who helps her family face impossible loss. (Booklist 2008-06-01)A fascinating coming-of-age story...Nanji does not end the book as a tragedy, but with a feeling of hope. As Sabine and heryounger brother sit on a plane on their way to Canada, Sabine makes a plan: "The best way to avenge the injustice, she decided, would be to live well and be happy." "The refugees came with just their shirts on their backs," Nanji points out. "Hey, we are resilient."...Told in a steady, rhythmic tone that initially belies the horror - and then makes it seem all the worse - Child of Dandelions is beautifully written. It evokes the terror and disbelief of the time. It reveals the strengths and shames of a culture that crashed from privilege to devastation in three short months. (Desi Life Magazine 2008-12-11)A gripping narrative that immerses readers in Sabine's thoughts so that they intimately experience her loss of naivety. (CM Magazine 2008-12-01)This is such a complex subject for young people, yet you do such a clear, concise job of making the issues understandable for your audience...The way you paced the novel, readers are putting together the facts along with Sabine—witnessing the shantytowns where generations of Ugandans had lived, discovering the warehouse filled with bodies... One of the novel’s great moments is when Sabine realizes that Zena must have been working behind the scenes to help her family. (School Library Journal 2008-04-10)A stirring coming-of-age novel. (Quill & Quire 2008-12-01)This is a revealing story about the devastation that occurred during the dictatorship of Idi Amin and the resulting political upheaval...This book screams the question: “Does history repeat itself?” There are so many parallels to the Holocaust, they are impossible to ignore. There are references to the Jewish plight in the book, which should prompt some emotional discussion among students who have been exposed to the dark events of the Holocaust. They won’t be able to help but ask themselves how these events could have happened in Uganda only three decades later... Female Intermediate students are especially likely to identify with the main character, Sabine, who is of South Asian descent...I feel a rating of 4 stars is warranted. (EFTO VOICE 2009-10-01)Readers are not only invited to experience the vivid sights of Kampala in the early 1970s, and to experience it as home for Sabine, but also to follow her through the ordeal of sudden displacement based on ethnic and class conflicts...a story that delves into the consequences of sudden cultural displacement that many Canadians experience prior to their arrival in this country. (Jeunesse: Young People, Texts, Cultures 2010-06-01)As I do for all books that concern other cultures/countries than our own, curious reader, I highly recommend this for your next read. Though carry a packet of tissues when you do. (Seattlepi 2012-07-29)

This was a remarkable book, a fine look into the political hell inflicted on Ugandan's Indian citizen and non-citizens during Idi Amin's reign of terror. The author is very objective and writes very well. The customs of the Ugandan society and the India society are well presented.

I have been for the last 10-11 years part of a wonderful Book Club. We call ourselves "The Book Gems". Over the years we have read the finest literature ever. We are a very close knit group of very intelligent, passionate, knowledgable and sensitive ladies. Many times we touched on my history and how my family had ended up in Britain from Uganda. So when it came to my turn I researched and found that there were not many books written about Uganda and the experiences of what the foreign Indians went through at the hand of Dada Idi Amin. This is part of history that not many people around the world know about. I was born in Jinja Uganda in 1966 and just 6 years later President Dada Idi Amin ordered an expulsion of all Foreign Indians and he imposed the 90 day count-down. This is my history and part of my life that has been deeply engraved in my memory. Reading Child of Dandelions really bought back the reality of what had gone on during this period. I loved the book because of that. It finally allowed me to let "The Book Gems". to feel for themselves the actual truth, the fear and sacrifies my family and other indian families had to make. It is a must read for all to find the terror and the truth about Uganda and Dada Ide Amin. I also choose The Shattered Pearl by Sara Armstrong to read along side Child of Dandelions both are easy reads but the knowledge acquired is of any history lecture given on Uganda. I loved both books. Greatly written and a very compelling story.

I enjoyed the book as I had a similar background and was curious about reading someone's experience on the topic. I was younger than her at the time so it was interesting for me to see what it was like for my older cousins during Amin's deportation.

I think I had heard somewhere before about the expulsion of Indians from Uganda, but beyond a vague recollection I knew nothing about it. Nanji has done teenagers a service with this novel, which tells the story of an episode in recent African history that's been all but forgotten in the West. Idi Amin came out against the wealthy Indian minority in Uganda and gave the entire population ninety days to get out of the country or die. Sabine's family believes the order doesn't apply to them because they are Ugandan citizens who have been living in Africa for generations, but they quickly learn that such niceties mean little to the dictator and his henchmen.Nanji resists the temptation to turn the characters into stereotypes; there are no all evil or all good people in this novel, but you see shades of gray in each one: Sabine's racist but kind family friend. Sabine's family's loyal African servant, who thinks of her family as his own. Sabine's African best friend who worships Idi Amin and agrees that, for the good of Uganda, the Indians must go. Her friend's uncle who is one of those abusing the Indians but protects Sabine's family at risk to himself. Sabine's grandfather, who's carrying a secret. Occasional phrases in African and Indian languages are sprinkled throughout and add authenticity without being distracting. This story is taut and suspenseful. As the countdown continues and the tensions escalate, readers will keenly feel Sabine's fear and uncertainty. A fine work; I would recommend it, and read this author again.

Child of Dandelions is a heart-rending story of Sabine - a teenager living in Uganda. Nanji's storytelling is pure and Sabine's (mis)adventure is full of the sights and sounds of Uganda in the 1970s when Idi Amin ordered the expulsion of some 80,000 Indians.Nanji - a children's book author has made an impressive debut into the Young Adult genre with her new book!

Idi Amin's reign of terror in Uganda included the ethnic cleansing of Uganda's Indian minorities. This book, from the perspective of a young girl, a Ugandan citizen but born to a family of successful Muslim Indian businesspeople, showcases the first tendency of socialists: DIVIDE AND ATTACK. Idi Amin singled out the talented and successful people in Uganda for elimination, gave them fair warning: 90 days until the exterminations begin, but then jumped the gun and started the political killings early.Sabine, the hero of this story, watches as her culture, friendships, and family are swept away by the evil of socialism. Watches as her girlhood friend is turned into a child prostitute for the President. Watches as her family is blamed for their successes and resilience by scummy soldiers motivated by greed.Sabine develops a "blame the victim" mindset: "Aunty, it is our fault. We took advantage of them..." p. 180. Understandable in the character, but false.Parents should be aware that Sabine travels to a cold-storage warehouse where the mutilated bodies of tortured political prisoners wait to be identified and dumped into the crcodile-infested lake for disposal. She sees the maimed corpses, and so does the reader. Various types of torture-killings are described with friendly names: "helicopter treatment," "hammer treatment," etc. Also, Sabine barely escapes being raped by a soldier as she tries to get her paperwork to flee the regime. Lower age limit of 14, is my recommendation.

If you’ve been paying attention, you can’t have missed the changes in the character of advertising over the course of your life. Certainly, I have. Chances are, you were born in the age of radio, at the earliest. If so, you’ve witnessed a string of new technologies enter the realm of news and entertainment, almost always paired with aggressive advertising sooner or later: network television, cable TV, the personal computer, the Internet, and the smartphone. In his insightful history of the business of advertising, Columbia University law professor Tim Wu casts a wider net. Beginning with the advent of the penny press in the 1830s, he explores in telling detail the now centuries-long battle between the commercial interests who want to seize our attention for their own ends and the individuals who want to keep our lives private and access news, information, and entertainment without distraction. This is a colorful story, and Wu tells it well.Though Wu opens with the introduction of the Sun in New York in 1833, his history more properly begins much later in the 19th century with the emergence of the advertising industry to sell Snake Oil and other patent medicines. (Yes, Snake Oil Liniment was actually a widely sold product Good for Man and Beast.) “From the 1890s thr0ugh the 1920s,” he writes, “there arose the first means for harvesting attention on a mass scale and directing it for commercial effect . . . [A]dvertising was the conversion engine that, with astonishing efficiency, turned the cash crop of attention into an industrial commodity.”The penny press, Amos ‘n Andy, and pop-up adsBeginning in the early years of the 20th century, Wu frames his story around the development of radio and the four “screens” that have dominated our attention over the decades that followed: the “silver” screen (film), television, the personal computer, and the smartphone. The author relates the history of each of these technologies as a human story, describing the often outrageous personalities who pioneered and dominated each of these media in turn. However, in focusing on radio and the four screens, Wu overlooks the billboards that mar every urban line of sight and barely mentions the direct mail that floods our mailboxes. Though less than comprehensive, his historical account is engrossing and enlightening. Here you’ll learn about the development of propaganda by the British government in World War I and its perfection by Nazi Germany . . . the first radio serial that was a smash hit (the grossly racist “Amos ‘n Andy“) in the 1920s . . . the invention of the soap opera in the 1930s . . . the battle between the networks on radio and later on TV from the 1930s through the 1990s . . . the development of geodemographic targeting for ads in the 1970s . . . the emergence of celebrity culture in the 1980s and its perversion by reality television in the 2000s . . . the wild proliferation of blogging in the 2000s . . . the identity theft committed by Google and Facebook in the 2000s and beyond . . . and, finally, “unplugging” and the emergence of free online streaming services like Netflix in the 2010s. This is not a pretty story.A harsh judgmentThe author is not a fan of the “new media” that have come to hold our attention in recent years. “The idealists had hoped the web would be different,” he notes, “and it certainly was for a time, but over the long term it would become something of a 99-cent store, if not an outright cesspool.” Similarly, Wu’s judgment about the advertising industry is harsh. “[U]nder competition, the race will naturally run to the bottom; attention will almost invariably gravitate to the more garish, lurid, outrageous alternative . . .” It’s difficult to find fault with any of this.About the authorHe’s the man who coined the term “network neutrality.” A specialist in media and technology, Tim Wu has written several books and numerous articles, all nonfiction. His work has influenced the development of national media policy under the Obama Administration.

Writing histories of soft power – advertising, entertainment, persuasion, etc – has its difficulties. The historians of the hard variety of power can attach their arguments to a battle won, a piece of legislation passed, an election lost, something concrete where impact and significance seem clearer, more obvious. Yet the exercise of soft power is both commonplace and important because it often does shape our lives in a myriad of ways. But how do you prove such claims?Well Tim Wu has done a masterful job of tracking the story of a changing group of people, mostly men, who have sort to harvest the attention of publics and then sell that attention to a bevy of clients, mostly advertisers of one kind or another. The overall story isn’t new: there have been many fine histories of advertising over the years, and of its effect on culture and consumers. But Wu adds to the chronicle by focusing much of his argument on the modern incarnation of the attention merchants, no longer just newspaper publishers or admen or broadcast moguls but the ones who run the massively popular websites, say a Mark Zuckerberg, that wins our attention by offering an appealing service, a lot of supposedly ‘free stuff.’ Except of course it isn’t quite free, or rather it produces a saleable product, our eyes, that can generate huge profits. And the success of such enterprise shapes the whole character of the internet, just like the fact of advertising shaped first newspapers, then radio, and finally television news and entertainment. It’s the details of the story that especially intrigue. Thus I was taken by his bio of someone he calls the alchemist, Claude Hopkins, an adman early in the 20th century, whose successes and views had a major impact on the course of marketing throughout the next few decades. Wu has obviously done much research and thought hard about his findings. He writes well, very well indeed: the story flows easily, the arguments are clear, and his claims are always interesting, even if you might doubt his conclusions. So his suggestion a consumer revolt is brewing nowadays I liked, and hope he’s correct, but I doubt – there have been too many such claims in times past but we still live in marketing’s moment. Things change yes, styles of persuasion get updated, but the rule of the persuader persists: so the political consultant may have suffered some hard times in the past election cycle (because so many expensive campaigns failed abysmally), but the triumph of Trump (who doesn’t figure in the book) shows the huckster remains a potent figure in the American mix.The characters I found most intriguing here, like Hopkins, weren’t just selling our attention but manufacturing attraction, making products or people or causes appealing to the various markets and publics. Because in part our attention to the free stuff doesn’t mean our submission to the wishes of the elites. There’s another step, namely the crafting of the brand or the cause, making something that captivates or, apparently, fills a need. In short the real exercise of soft power came through the efforts of the adman, although now more the ad-maker and public relations counsel, what’s been called the persuasion industry. Sometimes I had the feeling Wu’s approach emphasized attention too much, attraction too little. But the real point is that Wu’s book provokes thought about a brand of soft power that is both ubiquitous and compelling. The only answer, unfortunately inadequate I think, is to get off the grid – don’t Facebook, don’t tweet, don’t watch television, then you can’t be sold. Except, of course, you then miss out on the free stuff.

A good history on advertising, and well written. However, a majority of the content is on the 19th century and first 3 quarters of the 20th.The content on modern advertising (google, facebook, etc) is comparatively short and lacking exhibits. Isn't this why we bought the book, for insights into digital attention harvesting? This reader was left wanting for more examples and greater depth.Still contains valuable insight, and an entertaining read.

This was an excellent history of the advertising industry, with lots of thought-provoking historical analogs and anecdotes. It's a good follow-up to Tim Wu's earlier book, The Master Switch, that focuses on technology monopolies. The basic thrust of the book is that ever since the days of the earliest printing presses, there was a realization that the real money to be made from content was around harvesting "user attention". Through the 1800s and 1900s, the exact mechanisms used to harvest attention (newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television stations, and, eventually, the Internet) may have changed, the industry was always driven by the lucrative delivery of some percentage of some audience's time for commercial messages. The end of the book is, predictably, where the anecdotes become weaker and less interesting, as we transition to discussions of attention harvest and sale at companies like BuzzFeed and Facebook which are all very well covered by the popular press, at this point. But luckily the meat of the book is the (lesser known) history, and that's the portion I found most fascinating.
